Champions League clarity for Celtic

889

Celtic have received some clarity concerning their first Champions League qualifying round opponents after this week’s first leg results in qualifying round two.  The five matches that could provide an opponent for Celtic all produced hot favourites to progress.

Sheriff Tiraspol, who won away in Armenia, are 22 games into their league campaign and top the Moldovan table.  HJK Helsinki, who won 7-0 on Tuesday night’s Champions League qualifier, are joint top in Finland after 17 games.

All other expected opponents won 3-0 at home in the first leg.  Neftchi Baku are top of the Azerbaijan league after 16 games.  Molde are two points off the pace in Norway after 15 games.  AEL Limassol are Celtic’s only potential opponents who have yet to start their campaign.

If Celtic are to progress to the group stage they will have to overcome stiffer opposition than any of these teams in the final qualifying round, so we should look forward to a stiff test.

Loved the We are Celtic Supporters video from Celtic TV (below).  Great quotes from Jimmy McGrory, Tommy Burns, Billy McNeill, Paul McStay, Jock Stein and the original “<insert name> is more than a football club” from Sir Robert Kelly, a few decades before it was picked up in Catelonia.

  1. McFadden on the BBC saying he would be open to a move to Celtic, not for me, not good enough.

A big commanding CB, I’d be happy at that. Anything else is a bonus.

The average hun is just too easy to fool. Yes they have that pugnaciously inbuilt rabid suspicion for everybody that isn’t a frantic bigot but that is easily accommodated for by sprinkling your posts with a few routine hun phrases…tarrier, taig, never giving Celtic credit for anything, insinuating yourself into their paranoid conspiratorial world-view that the hidden fenian hand is everywhere…once you mimic them it is easy to coax them out of their shadowy lair and once that is done you are at liberty to psychologically torment them at will…yes after a time it does become a little tedious but still it passes an hour or so when you want to amuse yourself with a little sport.

  8. hamiltotim, agreed, we seem to have hit on a formula of getting in young players and adding value, and in more of a hit fashion rather than hit or miss. Some won’t lie up to the standard we’re looking for, but it seems to be working okay.

Italibhoy, agreed, five years ago yes, not now.

    Hi Luxcelt

Interested in your article as I live in Carlisle is this team actually based in Carlisle? I will try and find out. Having lived here for many a year I have to say it is a bigger hun town than probably most of Scotland. Makes me sick. I have been fighting a one-man battle here for many a year.

    Disgrace

  11. When their house of cards starting falling down one by one they said it was all a taig fantasy and timternet bampottery. Then they said they would NEVER go bust, it could NEVER happen to the mighty Rankers. When it did, they would be out of administration in no time at all. Besides the establishment would bail them out. Salmond and Cameron would come to the rescue. Then they would never go into liquidation. A Unionist government, the SNP, the SFA/SPL, everybody or anybody would surely save them in their parlous situation…maybe even a billionaire hun would come riding overly the hill. Then they would never be punished for anything because they are the Rangers. And they would never be put in the Third Division because they were too big for to fail…bladibladibladibla…now they won’t lose their titles during the EBT years…I can see a pattern evolving…
