Champions League clarity for Celtic

889

Celtic have received some clarity concerning their first Champions League qualifying round opponents after this week’s first leg results in qualifying round two.  The five matches that could provide an opponent for Celtic all produced hot favourites to progress.

Sheriff Tiraspol, who won away in Armenia, are 22 games into their league campaign and top the Moldovan table.  HJK Helsinki, who won 7-0 on Tuesday night’s Champions League qualifier, are joint top in Finland after 17 games.

All other expected opponents won 3-0 at home in the first leg.  Neftchi Baku are top of the Azerbaijan league after 16 games.  Molde are two points off the pace in Norway after 15 games.  AEL Limassol are Celtic’s only potential opponents who have yet to start their campaign.

If Celtic are to progress to the group stage they will have to overcome stiffer opposition than any of these teams in the final qualifying round, so we should look forward to a stiff test.

Loved the We are Celtic Supporters video from Celtic TV (below).  Great quotes from Jimmy McGrory, Tommy Burns, Billy McNeill, Paul McStay, Jock Stein and the original “<insert name> is more than a football club” from Sir Robert Kelly, a few decades before it was picked up in Catelonia.

Again, no offence intended but…does all this downsizing – tightening of the belt etc….have any impact on the CEO’s EPL-level bonus ?

  2. Ive been thinking that, as some people favour radical changes which the blinkered, such as myself, regard as unfair, perhaps we ought to implement a rolling package of reforms, all of which would be tested in D3, D2 and D1 in consecutive years. If, after those three years, the changes were popular and effective, we could then implement them in the SPL.

For example, gate-sharing. We could start it on D3 this very year, then roll it out a division each year. That way, the benefits would surely become apparent to doubting Thomases like me.

Disgraceful how the Appellate Tribunal keeps being undermined by ibrox, division 3 is too good for them.

Wayama Is a midfield player and Wilson is a failed center half who is a liability

The You Tube clip at the start of this is called “We are Celtic Supporters”.

One of the best, who thought of himself just an ordinary man, will be laid to rest today, and if you are of a faith , please remember him in your prayers.

I knew Frankie becuase of my Uncles Duncan & John. When I was a very young boy and started to go to the games , Frankie was part of “our table” in the Greenock Shamrock. The only way I can describe him is as the Model for the Mario Brothers. Small, heavy set, mass of curly black hair, black moustache, slight gap in his teeth, and a wee lisp. His appearance even more Mario like because he worked in United Mollases at the Dock, and wore a bright blue boiler suit, a cap, and a donkey jacket. If you didnt know him personally, then I am sure many will recognise the description of the wee man who could be seen walking along Hamilton Street, Ratho Street, or Morton Terrace, on his way to and from work.

My earliest memories of Frankie , were really of a calming head in our company. He was there and allways there, everywhere. They were halycon days to be a supporter. Aberdeen meant leaving Greenock at 7 in the morning …….. for a 3pm kick off. Not getting home till 2 in the morning.

So all through my boyhood , we were at the same memorable games, he saw them all. excpet 1 big one.

After my family moved to Blackpool, Frankie became my buddie for the games, we travelled together for the last season that the Shammy was opened, and I got to know him well, and a calm head, steering influence he was. We discussed many things, and I got to find out that he missed the Lisbon game , because, he has emigrated to the US, during 65, and on arriving was immediately signed into the army. So he listened to C

The transfer policy we have in place has been our reality for several seasons now and we have done well in finding quality players like Beram, Victor, Adam, Joe, Gary,Izzy and to that extent now we find ourselves in the position to have a young exciting team but then they didn’t come costing millions from the EPL to satisfy the drama needs of the transfer window junkies..

Oh how I wish we would sign somebody big like like like eh you know that overpriced guy from England.

You have never once offered any solutions to what you see as the problems at Celtic you’re just content to play the victim dissenter on here and getting your daily fix of hits for what you think are grenades on here.

    Frankie Gallacher –

After my family moved to Blackpool, Frankie became my buddie for the games, we travelled together for the last season that the Shammy was opened, and I got to know him well, and a calm head, steering influence he was. We discussed many things, and I got to find out that he missed the Lisbon game , because, he has emigrated to the US, during 65, and on arriving was immediately signed into the army. So he listened to Celtic win the big cup, while in a helicopter in Vietnam.

    Unbeliavble, but true.

All through life Frank and wife Rose hadnt been blessed with kids, and one day on his way to Tynecastle, a day that saw Celtic draw 1-1 with a late Paul McStay goal, he told me they wanted to adopt, but at his age, must have been late 40’s then might go against them, but they were going to try.

Frank and Rose adopted Sean, a bhoy with Downs syndrome a while later.

Sean was the funniest kid, a joy when you met him, affectionate, sometimes cheeky, but a laugh. Frank loved the bhoy , and from then he became the centre of his life.

A few times I asked him to come to the match but his life had changed and it was all about enjoying the times with Sean.

Sean passed away a few years ago, and had given Frank the best times in life.

So, raise a glass or say a prayer.

Frank Gallacher, he was the living soul of what being a Celtic supporter should be.

Clearly, with the club signing Fojut on a pre-contract, Lenny wanted another centre half. Whether that was to add to the group, or replace a planned outgoing, Big Dan for example, I couldn’t say, but I am not convinced by Kelvin Wilson and would have been happy enough had Fojut come in and Wilson left.

Rogne and Mulgrew are both decent players imo, but the current back up is Wanyama who is a midfielder, the untried Lustig, and then the kids Toshney and Fraser.

That’s a rather thin group of central defenders, a decisive area in European games.

While imo Kayal, Matthews and Forrest are the standout young talents to keep at the club, I’d be happy enough if we sold any from Ki, McCourt, Bangura and Stokes plus the ol ‘deadwood’, and bought a first team centre half and a top striker.

Going into a Champions League qualifier one Rogne hamstring tweak away from a crisis (playing Wilson…) is not the best planning.

Get the chequebook out Peter. You can always wheel and deal a little later if needed.
