Champions League income needed for Champions League budget

1182

I suspect we have not seen the best of Daryl Murphy, who has proven to be a solid Championship and fleeting Premier League player in England but has been unable to retain a place in the SPL, but his hamstring injury, suffered after the long flight to Pennsylvania, will be a blow on two levels for Celtic.  They are denied a squad player for the crucial Champions League play-off round against Helsingborgs and are likely to unable to loan him out, easing more pressure from payroll.

Daryl was singled out for credit (here) for the way he changed the shape of Celtic in our opening league game of the season against Aberdeen.  He would have been useful to Neil Lennon this coming week.

News that Helsingborgs have lost their top striker is welcome but is not quite ‘like signing a new player’ for Celtic.  Let’s hope they haven’t lost their Kenny Miller only to find their Jordan Rhodes.

There can seldom have been more financially important games to the club than the Helsingborgs tie.  Celtic accounts are usually released mid-August (16th last year) but I don’t anticipate any rush to publish this year.  Last season’s accounts could well see the largest loss in our history as the club chased their first league win in four years (insert standard lecture on financial responsibility program, avoid urge to run legacy Sir David Murray malware).

I expect the figures to show Celtic are operating with a Champions League budget (and that’s without evading tax).  Football finance lessons are clear, if you have a Champions League budget you need Champions League income.  Time for this team to step up to the challenge.  Get along and pack the place out on the 29th.

No regrets this time.

Bed early tonight if you are off to Dingwall in the morning. I hope we see a few of the young lads.

    Haha,yer right.

But what a player when we had him fit.

I remember standing in The Enclosure at Ibrox one day,he ran rings round a few huns, literally leaving one-Davie McKinnon?-on his arse, blood twisted.

    Right in front of us.

Clear as day,we heard him say….

LOL ……noticed the typo but, thought, not too far out ……. I think we are lucky to have PL ….. a great man, and a true Celt………

I have been involved in financial management and financial control.

I am currently doing brand development / product development and delivery.

No matter I am just a poor downtrodden salary man earning a crust.

Regarding the club’s financial health / accounts – games are being played.

We needed an emergency / low ball rights issue to keep our heads above water in 2005. We arrived at that position because of MON with his inability to sweat the assets and a lack of leadership to build on Seville.

BB’s CL 2003/04 handball looms large in this as a single event that caused us untold grief.

We do seem to suffer from CBs having a rush of blood to the head at awkward moments.

However the biggest issue we have is complacency.

There is no disputing where we are financially or where we are heading as a team. However it is no use pointing out the obvious now, we should have been having this debate 2 / 3 years ago. I tried to start it got some support but in the main the happy clappers just mouthed PL inspired propaganda or platitudes and the blog moved on.

PL has strengths but in the main he spends too much time doing other peoples jobs and all suffer. He needs to move on and a more specialised management team installed to do a proper growth job.

    Thanks

Given that we had EL football last year and there wasn’t that much transfer activity I can’t understand why the financials should be so bad …..unless we were being old porkies about the ST take up

Btw if we’re paying CL wages to our maintain our squad …a significant number are being

    overpaid

PL is earning a huge salary if the figures are as bad as we are being prepared for then he is bring way over paid

Hope the weather doesn’t spoil the day for the brave bhoys who make the journey to Dingwall.

I see the Media House boys are at it with the warnings of dire consequences if The Rangers are not restored to their proper place in the order of things.

Oh and they might not want to play in the SPL even if we ask them!

They are in such demand everywhere of course.

Now which league would want to bring in a team whose fans cause mayhem and don’t pay their bills?

I think you covered a lot of questions there, mate.

    Answered most of them too.

I don’t think the balance-sheet is the be-all and end-all,equally I know we can only sign what we can afford.

Our failing seems,IMO,not to have a flexible medium-term plan, where we can reasonably forecast where we will be in,say, three or five years time. Who we will be expecting to sign, and who to sell on and for how much.

It’s all done too much on the hoof. Fire-fighting.

Time to get BADA-BING along there to advise him on risk-management in this, his area of expertise!

Must say, it’s good to have a sensible debate………good mhan ……we don’t agree, but we respect other people’s opinions ….

I think Scottish Football would be in a much better place if the bhuns hadn’t arrogantly cheated on a grand scale over 20years ……. But justice has prevailed

  10. Just noticed that there are 2 football matches being played in Glasgow today, with Queens Park FC (Amateurs) as well as The Rangers FC (soon to be in administration) at home, wonder if the Police or Glasgow City Council will be concerned about possible civil unrest, there is a recent history of bad blood here, Queens Park have a known following of accountants, tax officials and lawyers, whilst The Rangers…..well.

We are now a selling club through necessity not choice.

Debt levels are increasing and turnover is falling like for like.

The house that Wee FMcC built is falling down all around us.

We have not moved on as a club / team / brand since he left.

PL has been calling the shots for a majority of this time.

His inaction, wrong moves and hidden bonus driven agenda should take the blame.

Do any other clubs around the world have this ?

My understanding is DD put the money into Lennoxtown plus these youth projects around the world. Could be wrong but will be in the accounts I would imagine.

Paul is setting us up for bad financial news. How bad could all depend on this CL game.

My charge is that games have been played with the accounts.

If you want “bodies” then look at the transfer spend.

Bloated / inflated figures – transfer spend in the accounts – what we could pay in certain circumstances.

Balanced by exceptional write offs in later years figures.

The old joke about AV was a good one.

Yes he did cost £1.5mill …

But only if he won a Nobel Prize, full international honours and the GC at Ayr.
