Champions League income needed for Champions League budget

1182

I suspect we have not seen the best of Daryl Murphy, who has proven to be a solid Championship and fleeting Premier League player in England but has been unable to retain a place in the SPL, but his hamstring injury, suffered after the long flight to Pennsylvania, will be a blow on two levels for Celtic.  They are denied a squad player for the crucial Champions League play-off round against Helsingborgs and are likely to unable to loan him out, easing more pressure from payroll.

Daryl was singled out for credit (here) for the way he changed the shape of Celtic in our opening league game of the season against Aberdeen.  He would have been useful to Neil Lennon this coming week.

News that Helsingborgs have lost their top striker is welcome but is not quite ‘like signing a new player’ for Celtic.  Let’s hope they haven’t lost their Kenny Miller only to find their Jordan Rhodes.

There can seldom have been more financially important games to the club than the Helsingborgs tie.  Celtic accounts are usually released mid-August (16th last year) but I don’t anticipate any rush to publish this year.  Last season’s accounts could well see the largest loss in our history as the club chased their first league win in four years (insert standard lecture on financial responsibility program, avoid urge to run legacy Sir David Murray malware).

I expect the figures to show Celtic are operating with a Champions League budget (and that’s without evading tax).  Football finance lessons are clear, if you have a Champions League budget you need Champions League income.  Time for this team to step up to the challenge.  Get along and pack the place out on the 29th.

No regrets this time.

Bed early tonight if you are off to Dingwall in the morning. I hope we see a few of the young lads.

  1. As I don’t know much about Ross County I think our teamm can change to suit their fromation…

  2. Celtic … @ 11.23

Not sure about the exact ages / over age player regulations involved.

I would probably look for U21 in-line with EUFA comp timings.

Either that or U22/23 and only one over-age player.

  5. TKF Predictor 2012-13

The Kano Foundation are running our usual Predictor Competition once again. This season though it is going to be a fully online version – basically the same idea as the one we ran for the Euros in June.

However as this is is to try to taise some funds for the Foundation we are asking for a small joining fee, details of how to pay etc will be sent to you all once you have joined up. The fee this year will be a one-off payment of £5.

We had a fantastic response to the Euros Predictor and would love to have a similar if not greater response to this one.

Currently it will be an EPL based Predictor only (they dont so SPL apparently) but we are considering doing a Celtic-based idea, but more on that later.

Anyway it’s dead simple to join up, simply clink the link below, enter the code and you will then be “sent for approval”. Once we do that you can make your predictions and its Game On!

Be great to have as many of you join up as possible – and as its online, the scoring will be done automatically……no doubt to the pleasure of many of you TKF Predictor veterans!

    Thanks in advance

  6. Set out as 3-5-2 by the looks of it with Kris playing off Sammy up front

  8. Looks a 3-5-2 to me

    3 CH’s in Lustig, Wilson + Charlie

Matthews + Izzy as the wing backs with Vic, Beram + Joe in centre midfield

There is a possibility that Commons will be given a roving role behind Sammi as a lone striker

  10. The formation will change. It will be fluid, as it should be.

It will be interesting to see if they approach things the way they want to on Tuesday night. If we do as we did in Helsinki and press Ross County all the way up the park, I think it will be an indication of things to come on Tuesday.

High pressing without the ball. Slick passing with the ball. Play them off the park, Celtic.

  11. Slane, Keatings and Watt on the bench. Young ghuys, but great fire-power to bring on if required. I hope we are winning 0-5 after an hour and all three get on and score.

  12. Mad place I live in…..no csc any more. A Tim I vaguely know went to watch last week’s match in a downtown pub and got scarily hassled by Anglo skinheads….too many Chelsea fans on holiday or bevvied w/end to contend with.

Me? I don’t scare easy but I’d rather not watch a match in a hostile environment.

So this season I’ve lived up to principles and not got sky/espn. Got CelticTV.

    Am now feeling withdrawal symptoms.

Damned if you do. Damned if you don’t. Wind back the decades and listen to the radio.

A six year old girl was once asked which she preferred, tv or radio. She said : radio. Why? she was asked. Because the pictures are better, she replied.

    I don’t believe her.

Well, that’s my whinge for the day.

Interesting post awaits. Compensatory cd : Rotersand’s ‘Random is Resistance’.

  17. as much as i enjoy celtic quick news and appreciate paul’s work, i dont think he has direct access to celtic’s financial situation and i find it hard to beleive we will not see a slight profit with some debt paid down. i recall paul telling us to take a long look around parkhead (celtic park) cause the celtic triangle would raise like a beckon, that was about 3/4 years ago and it does not look like it will be in place for another 3/4 years. paul loves celtic as we all do, but he’s not always correct.

for what its worth i think pl has had good and bad moments at celtic, hopefully this seasons decision will prove fruitful for all. i aint in the camp of buying for the sake of buying, either we bring in better than what we have or we dont bother, i also hate the idea of loan signings, who simply take any addition income from CL/ EL participation

p.s celtic like every other club in the world is a selling club, jesus RVP just signed for manu, who lost CR to madrid. imo celtic should be looking to bring in quality young players and should be lining these deals up months before the season starts, then being them in early which offsets fans disappointment when players leave and installs optimism in the fans.

p.p.s the club can grow, but it will grow faster and stronger if it looks after off the field developments as well as on the field developments, i have a simple theory/ hypothisis players take from the game and from our club, with occasional return from transfers, supporters give to clubs/ offer over money and do so time and time again.

i would rather celtic got into the C/L and spent money doing up the place and developing new income/ revenue, than sign a couple of players. if possible we should be looking to sell ki, mccourt, bangurra, thompson and murphy in order to generate the money to develop the first team and using the youngsters more. do that and in 2 years time we will be generating many millions more income every season, which can then be spent in the general running of the club i.e. players wages
