Champions League income needed for Champions League budget

1182

I suspect we have not seen the best of Daryl Murphy, who has proven to be a solid Championship and fleeting Premier League player in England but has been unable to retain a place in the SPL, but his hamstring injury, suffered after the long flight to Pennsylvania, will be a blow on two levels for Celtic.  They are denied a squad player for the crucial Champions League play-off round against Helsingborgs and are likely to unable to loan him out, easing more pressure from payroll.

Daryl was singled out for credit (here) for the way he changed the shape of Celtic in our opening league game of the season against Aberdeen.  He would have been useful to Neil Lennon this coming week.

News that Helsingborgs have lost their top striker is welcome but is not quite ‘like signing a new player’ for Celtic.  Let’s hope they haven’t lost their Kenny Miller only to find their Jordan Rhodes.

There can seldom have been more financially important games to the club than the Helsingborgs tie.  Celtic accounts are usually released mid-August (16th last year) but I don’t anticipate any rush to publish this year.  Last season’s accounts could well see the largest loss in our history as the club chased their first league win in four years (insert standard lecture on financial responsibility program, avoid urge to run legacy Sir David Murray malware).

I expect the figures to show Celtic are operating with a Champions League budget (and that’s without evading tax).  Football finance lessons are clear, if you have a Champions League budget you need Champions League income.  Time for this team to step up to the challenge.  Get along and pack the place out on the 29th.

No regrets this time.

Bed early tonight if you are off to Dingwall in the morning. I hope we see a few of the young lads.

  1. rhodes, I haven’t seen play

what about, Holt. genuine here, eye for goal, experienced, big character in the dressing room

    Big Vic up front?!

Might work – but not going to happen imo!

Do you know something the rest of us don’t?

Unlike yourself I suspect that we have seen the best of Darryl Murphy but sadly even his best is nowhere near good enough. And neither is his fitness record. We lost three players to strains and sprains in Philly, and I can guarantee you they were not caused running up those famous steps Rocky style. You suggested it yourself just the other day, we need to take a close look at the way we are preparing players to play football. Joe Venglos was at Parkhead fifteen years ago, have we forgotten all that we learned? It certainly seems that way. We travelled to Germany without reaching any kind of fitness, travelled about, played games, Ajax eventually, does Neil Lennon actually believe you can get fit on the road? If so it is not working. New approach needed.

Lower league sides do not have to adhere to the transfer window.

i thought that yesterday, oddly enough, so i checked it out.

lower league clubs DO adhere to the transfer window.

    conference clubs and below don’t.

he’s, ermmm, not that bad. is he?

Neil Lennon has stated most of the injuries will have cleared by Tuesday, we just dont want to possibly aggravate any of them tomorrow.

Champions league budget, for spl players. You must be at the wind up Paul or giving us the heads up that no signings will be coming in never mind what European league we are in.

  7. Starry – ouch. I think we need a review of our fitness coaching and what input the physios have to warming up and recovery before and after games.

Prevention is always better than cure.

But anyway – strongest possible team with maybe a young fella at the front and maybe one at the back too.

No messing in the SPL – maximum respect to all clubs and their fans is a must, but mostly a well gelled, game ready Celtic for Wednesday night (or s it tuesday?) i essential.

By the wa any word of the Helsingborg game being on the tellyV?

    There’s a name I haven’t thought about in years.

One of those lesser-spotted Celtic players of the MON era, like Momo Sylla, Ulrik Laursen, and David Fernandez.

I still like him a loater. (thumbsup)

I would have liked to have seen us being a bit braver and signed Rhodes.

Said this a couple of months ago- even at 5m we would get our money back on this kid- he would score more goals than Hooper up here. How much is Hooperman valued at present?

    Indeed I do not :-)

Did you see him in the pre season friendlies at Parkhead? I think it was the Norwich game that I watched him go under the ball on 6 separate occasions.

He’s a centre midfielder and that’s where he should be played.

All in my opinion of course :-)

  13. Sevco manager Fat Sally says he will fight the Scottish Football Association charge against him.

McCoist had called for the three-man SFA judiciary panel who punished the club to be named.

The Sevco boss and the club’s chief executive Charles Green have both been charged with bringing the game into disrepute.

McCoist said he had informed the SFA of his decision and believes Green will do likewise.

Green had claimed bigotry was among the motives for punishing the club for the misdemeanours of the old company.

McCoist and Green had until Friday to respond, with a hearing set for 30 August.

But Rangers chairman Malcolm Murray has already vowed to defend the pair against any charge of bringing the game into disrepute.

Rangers face a 12-month transfer embargo, beginning on 1 September, and were fined £160,000.

The punishments came as a result of the club being found guilty of five breaches of SFA rules, while then owner Craig Whyte was found guilty of two rule breaches and fined £200,000.

Speaking on Friday, McCoist said “At that particular time, there was nobody really standing up for the club at all.

“I just felt, in the position I was in, that I didn’t have any other option than to speak out for the club.

“I stand by it to be honest.”

McCoist had asked: “Who are these people? I want to know who these people are.

Thanks. My “United Kingdom and USA are as well guilty of the tragedy that happened in Warsaw” was only about the ghetto and the Jews, not Warsaw or war as a whole.

I did post the link to the interview with Jan Karski. I’m afraid, you will not know why I said what I said until you watch at least second part of this interview. Karski tells in this interview what Roosvelt and Churchill could do, what were their reactions on the first hand news from the Warsaw ghetto.

Karksi is not only Polish hero. He is a hero for all the Jews as well. He does not put Polish point of view in that in that film but Jewish point of view as well.

Somebody who knows about bad things that are happening and can do something to stop them is to blame, or he is not to blame?

Never, nowhere in my posts blamed UK or USA for all bad things that happened in my country during WW2.

if celtic record a significant loss then there should be an inquest, we have not had a net spend in i dont know how many years. we did carry a big squad last year but not so big that our debt should be massive and we did play in the e/l as well, if anything, i would expect a little profit and some debt paid down.

i would hazard a guess right now that murphy is paid the combined wages of mathews, rogne, victor, ibrahium, watt and philip t. imo murphy is a very poor player who takes a lot and offers little and i would be looking to off load him asap, i would also do the same with bangurra, wilson and paddy. if reports are correct then i would not be disappointmed to see ki go as well.

celtic are a big fish in a small pond and as a result we should be able to bring through more young players than those clubs playing in larger/ stronger leagues imo. if we cant give them a chance then whats the point in paying money to run a youth system? if we played watt or keatings i would expect them to progress into decent first team players, who knows they might even become better than decent.

we need to run with a small squad of quality players and use the young players/ academy players as back up to the first team group.

I am more happy to remember when he slotted in at CB last season for us than when he has been messing about in Friendlies.

  19. Anyone else signed up for the CQN league? Not much point doing it now right enough if you haven’t now that my team is in… :0)

  20. hamiltontim,

I disagree, Victor could be an exceptional CB and the reason he is not the polished article at CB is because he is really a midfielder.

What I like, as you point out, is his total eagerness to win Everything.

As I say, he could be an amazing CH if the coaches took him down that route.

The man has WINNER written all over him, he selected 67 because he knows he can. A Black philvisreturns if ever there was one. ;)

  21. Some of the comments regarding Murphy’s ability are a bit extreme. Yeah, he’s no MacAvennie or even a John Hartson, but he has his uses if employed in the right way at the right time. He is not a goalscorer. His record suggests he never has been. But he is big and strong. He has reasonable speed and he has a decent touch ( much better than I had ever expected). Murphy is good enough to go up against standard SPL defences. He should have played up at Caley Thistle when in the Cardigans last season…as he had effectively played the role of battering ram against St Johnstone away earlier on in the season- he should be deployed away from home against big physical defenders and at home later on in games when a tight passing game is not working. He has his uses- but to bring out his best strengths he needs to be deployed tactically.

  22. archdeaconsbench on

Sorry Paul, but Darryl Murphy is one of the worst if not the worst striker I’ve seen in the hoops. As someone touched on earlier, the only drawback to his injury is we cannot move him on in this window. If there is any doubt on his (pitiful) scoring record with us, check his stats for Sunderland. 14 goals in over 100 games (5 years).

If he was playing for the Huns we would have a field day…

Regarding Collins and McStay, Paul McStay was an indespensable figure in the Celtic side for 8 or 9 years before JC arrived. He had everything you would want in a player and had very few peers in the European game in the mid 80’s. However niggling injuries, a down turn in Celtics and possibly his own form meant that Collins, who established himself in the team pretty much straight away after signing in 1990, imho became the better of the 2 from that point onwards. McStay in the Centenary season though was untouchable…

  23. Big managerial test for Lenny and his coaching staff tomorrow.

Picking a side with Tuesday´s game in mind.

Players carrying injuries, who should be risked?

Who is lacking match sharpness and needs a game?+

A lot of travelling of late, who needs a rest?

I know its early in the season but surely you build fitness methodically and it’s not just about playing as many games as possible.

There are some players who if they got injured would have me even more worried about Tuesday (can´t help bricking it when Celtic in Europe are concerned): Commons, Mulgrew, Ledley, Hooper and Samaras

  25. WGS’s teams were the fittest teams I have seen playing for celtic.

IMO it’s not coincidence that despite their (arguably) limited ability compared to other recent teams, and a definitely dull style of football, they achieved more than other celtic teams of the recent gen
