Celtic will face Kazakhstan Champions, Astana in the Champions League play-off round later this month, with the first leg at home. The teams faced in the same qualifying competition last season, with Celtic progressing, winning the second leg 2-1 after a 1-1 draw in Kazakhstan.
Astana eliminated Legia Warsaw in the last round, securing a 3-1 victory in the first leg, before holding on for a 1-0 defeat in Warsaw after 8 minutes of added time.
Although Brendan Rodgers will know what to expect, the enormous journey, the heat and the fact that Astana are 21 games into their league season, will give him cause for concern.
On the positive side, our man in Warsaw tells me there is a new pitch at the Astana Arena, which Legia report was excellent and a near-grass experience. He also tells me Legia should have done better in this tie, were the better team home and away, but were caught by Astana’s counter-attack.
They “parked the bus” in Warsaw and showed signs of indiscipline against Legia, which Celtic may be able to exploit.
Strikers Kwumasi and Kabananga, and midfielder, Maevski, are their danger players, while their keeper is “awful”.
It’s there for you, Celtic.

I think time difference won’t play against FK Astana.
As a matter of how much this game means for whole Kazakhstan, take decision that was made one hour after the draw. Their next oponent Aktobe ofered to play the game against Astana on 11 August (one day earler it stood in the schedule). Kazakhstan FA binded decision.

I’m afraid at this stage of the tournament you very rarely get a commanding lead, imo the trick is don’t loos a goal at home and score away, we didn’t do that last year and qualified, sorry for picking up another positive, but hey! There are 3 major sports teams in Toronto that make regular transborder trips, TFC also do the same, in the CFL (Canada’s’ equivalent of the NFL) TO also has a side, this sport is huge on the prairies and west coast, bigger than hockey so domestic flights are common.
Toronto Pearson is the biggest airport in the country and yet none of the sports sides come through the terminals, I can’t vouch for the Toronto Island Airport, neither do visiting teams, they use the FBO and there are 2 at Pearson.
When we last played over here our players flew into the Skyservice FBO and were bussed downtown from there, likewise the Stones flew into the same location from Europe for a benefit concert a few years back.
In fact I have often saw team busses at the north end FBO either waiting for a returning side or dropping one off.
The Rogers Tennis Tournament has competitors coming through the terminals to be picked up at the curb, but NOT the well known players who either fly across country or even the Atlantic.
The Toronto Film Festival (TIFF) allegedly second only to Cannes does have “stars” coming though the public side but it’s their choice, some of them crave the adulation.
So why are there no like facilities at Glasgow Airport which likes to label itself an international airport. Might be time for the club to look to Edinburgh, cannae be any worse than having drunken trailer trash castigating your employees.
Incidentally I once approached an academy award winner about smoking less than 3 metres (10 feet) from the terminal, his response was “do you know who I am”, I replied “of course I do, you were brilliant in the Graduate”. He laughed at that.

So, tickets for a seat at Celtic Park home Euro-tie are now 14 x dearer than in 1972. Remembering, of course, that Main Stand tickets would have been sold as premium tickets at that time.
It’s obviously impossible to do a like-for-like price comparison between then and now, not least since we no longer have terracings, as we did of old.
That said, tickets for the main stand would have accounted for a relatively small fraction of the gate money.
I’m not sure of the Main Stand’s capacity, but another, round numbers way of looking at this could be to say: 10,000 @ £2 = £20,000, plus 50,000 @ 50p = £25,000, giving a grand total of £45,000 income. (Ignoring, of course, that a good few youngsters back then would have got a ‘lift’ into the games.)
Nowadays, (ignoring premium/hospitality seats) we might have, for the sake of argument, a crowd of 55,000 made up of 35,000 full-price tickets @ £28 (£980,000), plus 4,000 @ £33 (£132,000), plus 12,000 @ £18 (£216,000), plus another 4,000 @ £13 (£52,000).
Which comes to a nifty £1,380,000 – for tickets alone.
Compare that with a 1972 crowd of 70,000 made up of, say, 60,000 @ 50p (£30,000) and 10,000 @ £2 (£20,000), giving gate money alone of £50,000,
From £52,000 to £1,380,000 is a 26-fold increase in gate money income …
