Chill your jets, excuse to fail

849

Chill your jets.  Far better to win and score five goals in a preseason friendly than to lose, but these games are all about improving fitness, the score is the least important aspect. Notwithstanding that, I’m pleased Teemu Pukki showed some form in front of goal. I don’t think Celtic would stand in his way if he found a potential new employer, but if he remains with us this season, his pace is likely to sit comfortably with the Ronny Deila model.

After missing the bulk of the last two Champions League campaigns through injury and Brazilian diving, news that Scott Brown will miss an extended period as a consequence of his hamstring injury is a blow to club and player.

It could have been worse. Celtic lost Scott for the bulk of last season’s Champions League on 1 October, when they were unable to compensate by tweeking the squad. Expectations are we will be without the player until October and we are only nine days into the transfer window. Lots of time to ensure we are at full strength when the meaty part of the season starts.

Brazil players and Phil Scolari turned up for yesterday’s semifinal wearing Naymar caps in the absence of their star striker. Their Excuse To Fail – emblazoned across their foreheads. Literally!

Add to the mix what can only be described as inappropriately enthusiastic anthem singing, while holding up the no. 10 shirt of, let’s remember, another player, not a fallen war hero, and you have all the ingredients for cloudy and unstructured thinking, instead of focus and awareness.

I don’t doubt this was all well-meaning but it was amateurish naivety. Players should turn up to a stadium with their game plan dominating their minds, not lamenting the loss of their best hope, having been consumed by national pride, one of mankind’s enduring fallacies. The Brazilian FA should immediately sack Roy Hodgson Big Phil.

Has all this Tour de Yorkshire business put you in the mood to get the bike out? If you why don’t you sign up for the Cardenden Cycle, which this year takes place on 6 September. You cycle from Celtic Park to the grave of John Thomson in Cardenden, Fife, a 64 mile journey. Full details are here.

If your cycling days are over, they are looking for drivers and stewards… if you’re available.

  6. To be honest, I don’t care about the BTC decision. Heidi Poon ripped the original judgement to shreds, her minority opinion is scathing.

What annoys me is the Nimmo Smith decision- that’s the one that covered up their crimes IMHO.

But ultimately they are dead and they know it. And if this decision allows the new club to become ever more bombastic and entitled then so be it. A similar outcome will await TRFC as befell RFC, sure as night follows day.

  12. RWE…

It is ridiculous to interpret Scott Brown actions as the use of “EXCESSIVE FORCE” in the Neymar incident.

That is why Neil Lennon, Gordon Strachan, so many people in the ground and no doubt many of the millions who watched the game on TV could not believe it when Lanois flashed the red card – even after watching several replays of the “lick” (it was indeed more of a lick than a kick!)

And no, it is not irrelevant to refer to Lanois refereeing in the French League Cup Final.

The rules are the rules after all are they not and should be interpreted consistently.

However we all know these are open to interpretation (see Celtic yellow/red cards for player celebrations for example) and to suggest this referee’s UEFA career would be over is pure speculation on your part.

This is after all the same referee who in the 2010 World Cup allowed a Brazil goal to stand against the Ivory Coast when Fabiano, in front of millions on TV, clearly punched the ball into the net. That glaring error did not have any adverse effect on the Frenchman’s career.

    Excessive is it?

Did you see Luis’s wild swing at Muller last night – where was FIFA’s Rule 12 then.

I better not argue any further though in case you give me a straight red.

You must be a referee to be quoting FIFA Rule 12 Explanatory Notes! :)

  13. Steinreigned,

We can’t safely assume that Supper Swally will be their manager a few years from now. If we are bricking it to gamble on CL qualification in a one horse race, what chance have we when Operation Sevco barges its way into our league.

I’m not stressed or even worried. Just very very disappointed that we have seemed so keen to welcome them- against the will of most of the support I believe, and without a hint of concern about the 10s of millions we have been cheated out of in CL revenue by their predecessors. I’m not looking to debate this issue, it has been done to death. I just found some of the smug comments from one or two aimed at Tiny Tim’s very valid concerns to be poor and betraying a lack of intellect.

    Germany v Brazil

Have to say I’m disappointed in Germany for not being ruthless enough. They could have scored 20 last night and it would’ve flattered the Brazil side.

I’m sure when people on here were asked to pick their best XI of the CQN years, my selection would’ve provoked a bit of sneering. Last night’s game proved that Football today is 99% effort and 1% skill.

The Brazil players individually are decent players but without organisation, determination and hard work, they played in a way that would’ve seen them bottom in a league containing Sevco, San Marino and the Cook Islands.

I can honestly say I’ve never seen a team play as badly as that, ever. Even the CFC disasters of Neuchatel, Artmedia, Mowbray’s last game, Clyde and ICT were not in the same league as last nights game.

Germany even had the fortune of Ozil having a mare, continually losing the ball in possession and were simply able to bypass Ozil as the central area of the pitch was vacated by the Brazil side.

The Brazil side ranked in order of rankness.

    1) Marcelo – Real Madrid

    2) David Luiz – Paris St Germain

    3) Fernandinho – Manchester City

    4) Maicon – AS Roma

    5) Oscar – Chelsea

    6) Hulk – Zenit St Petersburg

    7) Fred – Fluminese

    8) Julio Cesar – Toronto

    9) Luis Gustavo – Bayern Munich

And what will you say when they win the SPL, or one of the cups and the name (Rangers) is engraved on the cup (or whatever they do) and they add 1 to “their existing” trophy tally, ie 54 league titles became 55 and the SFA, UEFA and FIFA say nothing.

It depends what you consider them to be, in my mind it will be their first, up to you what you think.I do think the SPL should not have accepted the NS judgement, we were part of that, and agreed to merge the SPL with the SFL a mistake without challenging this decision

  25. Gordon

No, not a ref. & never reffed a game in my life.

But I have looked at the rules because Celtic keep getting on the wrong end of them.

Whether you or I think what SB did was “excessive” is completely irrelevant. Lanois considered it so, within the rules he has to apply, and showed him a red. It wasn’t unfair. IMHO It was appropriate IMHO.

Read the whole of the section of the rules on that yourself. Careless, reckless and excessive force are the three incremental steps in foul play. These terms are defined and what SB did fell easily within the definition of excessive. No matter how much you might say it was a ridiculous decision, the ref applied the same rules that SB should be aware of.

What Luiz did the other night was probably reckless within those same definitions, since he missed connecting with the ball by inches. SB kicked out at a prone opponent with the ball nowhere. Contact is not necessary, but context is.

If you are complaining of referee inconsistency then you better get in line. We see that in Scotland every week, we’ve seen it in this World Cup, we see it in CL games. The rules allow for that inconsistency by stating that every decision is in “the opinion of the referee.”

It seems to me (perhaps wrongly) that you are conflating a lot of issues to get to where you are. I am simply stating that SB deserved a red card for what he did. Harsh to some people, perhaps, but the ref had ample deniability for the decision he took. Others have done worse and not been sent off, but that is part of the consistency argument. Celtic did not even appeal, because they knew it would have been silly to do so.

Just as silly as what SB did, regardless that the target was wee nyafff Neymar, and the other usual suspects were clamouring for Scott to be shown the red card.

My view on what the ref might have endured if he hadn’t given the red is, as you say, speculation: but speculation is just opinion with more letters. I was disappointed that SB was shown a red, but I wasn’t surprised when I saw the rerun.

No red for you, you’ll be playing the full 90 minutes :o)
