Cluj or Maccabi Tel-Aviv gives Celtic generous draw

258

If Celtic overcome Nomme Kalju in the Champions League second qualifying round, they will face either Cluj or Maccabi Tel-Aviv in the third qualifier.

Cluj are one of those clubs who will never be taken lightly, after a remarkable win away to Roma in the Champions League nine years ago, but recent times have not been as prosperous.  They lost out in last year’s Europa League qualifiers to Luxembourg’s Dudelange.  In the first qualifying round this season, Cluj recorded an unexpected win against Astana, who are seeded only slightly lower than Celtic.

Maccabi Tel-Aviv went out of the Europa League playoff round last season to Norwegians, Sarpsborg.  This was a poor showing by Maccabi, but there are caveats – the Norwegians were midseason and subsequently put on a decent showing in their Europa group.

Apart from Saturday’s Super Cup, this will be Maccabi Tel-Aviv’s first competitive outing of the season, so you would not bet against Cluj taking down their second seed of the campaign.

There is work to do, but it we cannot reach the payoff round from this draw, we do not deserve to be there.

  1. If anything or anyone could make me feel in any way positive towards The Gowf and that whole 19 hole Golf Klub palaver….the Lowry’s post win sing-song celebration might just do it.

    Heart-warmin’.

A great antidote to all the usual Golfing Wallah Guff. Check it out ( think one fine CQN’r) posted it here, especially if you are feeling in any way – below par!

We have needed a right back for about two years

As far Pukki. If he Came back to Celtic he would go back to being a non goal scoring striker

The English championship must be one of the worst overpaid leagues in the world

I watched Leeds United in a friendly here last Saturday. Truely awful football

But I did notice there right back Barry douglas I think. He looked not too bad. Worth a shout

By: Newsroom Staff on 23 Jul, 2019 09:47

WITH just over 24 hours to go until kick-off, time is running out to sign a right back in time for this weeks European action at Paradise.

It’s shaping up to be another exciting night under the lights, and with the last remaining tickets realised on general sale now priced from £26 for adults, from £14 for concessions and from £9 for under-13s – there’s still time to make sure you don’t miss a minute of Kristoffer Ajer or (God help us) Jack Hendry at right back here at Celtic Park!

The ticket price on any player is no guarantee of quality, for eg:

    Lubo = 350k

    Ryan C = 250k

Tore Andre Flo = 12mill smackers

    Michael Ball = 8.75mill

1.6m worth of utility backman could be a shrewd investment. HH (Hail Hatem!)

Liz McNeill and Sadie Chalmers to unfurl the Premiership Flag

By: Newsroom Staff on 23 Jul, 2019 10:17

CELTIC are preparing for another special day at Paradise as the league flag is unfurled in celebration of the eighth consecutive league title, which was secured last season as the team secured a Treble Treble.

  7. ‘He’s not worth £5m I’ll drive him to the airport myself.’

Ex Celt Van Dijk favourite for Balon D’or.

  8. Are RBs capable of playing at LB and vice versa. We all know that KT has played RB for Scotland. Is Boli able to play RB for us. Should KT stay with us then Boli might be warming the bench a lot of the time which might not be ideal

  9. Clinko

You did see the state of Boli’s right foot last week didn’t you ?

  10. Given that Rangers got £250,000 for Candieas

I was wondering how close to Ibrox noise valuation that was

    saw last week they had

    Aribo 15M (free from Charlton)

    Tavernier 20M

    Jones 15M (free from Killie)

    Arfield 15M (free from Burnley)

    Camara 15M ( 50K from Dundee)

Would also like to know why PL cant get frees and turn them into 15M after two friendlies

So basically you have to go back to another club and another era to see the Ibrox team get a decent fee for a player sold.

I am not sure what their record is since 2012 but it all adds up to a club in big big trouble when you cannot get a decent transfer sum in every now and then…no wonder they are in big financial trouble still.

  12. This right back situation if not resolved is going to cost us a place in the C. L just like the centre half one last season

Wow what a difference in money received and relative recent time scale to our zombie neighbours….You can also add 5 million on top of the Van Dyke figure with last seasons extra add on

  14. Don’t want a right back anymore. When was the last time you went to a game desperately hoping your RB played well.

Seriously it would be good to get one but all that will happen is the focus goes to another team . In all the time I’ve watched Celtic our good sides have been two or three players away from what we want, don’t see that changing anytime soon.

Sign strikers and creative players first, they win games.

  15. I’m just wondering how many of us who would have happily driven Lustig to the airport during the past year would now be delighted to pick him up from the airport.

I can’t believe that after the disastrous CLQ campaign of last year we’re moving forward at a snail’s pace with our team strengthening AGAIN!

    To paraphrase that movie :

Lawwell, I know what you DIDN’T do last summer

    ……..and its happening again!

  16. Hunderbirds are Gone on

    *Peter Grant at right back……….shudders…..

    * In the roll-call of Celtic midfielders converted to right back, you seem to have overlooked Mikey Galloway… choke, cough splutter…

    🍀⚽️

  17. Contemplating CL qualifiers into the second round, with an experimental back three ten days before the first league game, is less than ideal.

The pursuit of a right back seems to have gone on for longer than Jason’s search for the golden fleece, and even if the right one, was to sign before the deadline for X million, will he be fit, and settled for selection, for the opening league games?

Hatem Abd Elhamed being pilloried before he’s even a Hoop, is downright ignorance of the worst kind, newspaper rebranding the Israeli as Neil Lennon’s ‘new first choice full back’, is malevolent, Michael taking, and nothing more than manna for the Celtic transfer ‘we want brigade’.

Whatever the price of mince in Govan the curtain hasn’t even begun to fall on this window, where having shifted most of Brendan Rodgers’ flotsam, we’ll more likely than not, sign three or four including a right back more, taking our spend closer to the Dembele equivalent.

BADA – happy to be corrected; transfermarket figure read wrong. Whit a bargain for that level of energy and talent.
