Coaching, Brendan’s open canvass

580

Apologies for recent radio silence.  Lots going on with some weighty matters which will soon be of interest to you, unfortunately didn’t have time to blog for a few days.

So much going on simultaneously but I can’t really focus on anything with the daunting evening ahead tomorrow. Season Two of the Brendan Rodgers era will be considerably influenced by the events in Trondheim. Rosenborg are a shadow of their former glory, but Celtic must patch a team together and win (or secure a score draw) in Norway to reach the Champions League group stage.

Most Celtic fans I speak to expect us to win the game, but we’re an optimistic lot (cough). Let’s hope that’s based on sound reason.

I was surprised to hear Shaun Maloney has been speaking to Brendan Rodgers about a youth coaching role at Celtic. Shaun was a rare graduate of the Celtic youth system under Martin O’Neill, breaking through as an 18-year-old in 2001. He will also know more about Lennoxtown than practically any player, as he gorged on gym time there during lengthy periods of injury, while others were resting.

Does he have what it takes to be a good youth coach? This is a difficult one to answer. Look east. Ian Cathro had an exemplary record as youth and assistant coach under some talented managers, assisting at Valencia and Newcastle. But Cathro’s success was down to the management structure he flourished under. On his own, at Hearts, he perished. Sacked four days before the league kicks off.

If Shaun joins the Celtic coaching setup he will begin a new tutelage under Brendan Rodgers. The manager may be looking for an intelligent, open, canvass, to work with.

Like you I lived in London for a decade and saw a lot of things that shocked me when I first moved down, I shared a flat with a guy from Middlesboro, lovely guy but going to the football to watch his team, mate what a horrible horrible crew.

Every team has it’s bams but in England that racist edge to the supporters left me feeling wow that’s mental.

I think Brendan will be pulling a fast one tomorrow and throwing a real curve ball at the Norweigians.

Here’s hoping, my nerves are jangling and still 24 to go:))

There has always been something sinister in the sleekit, sniggering best wee bigoted country in the world.

From a government minister admitting a law was put in place not to serve justice but to criminalize some and even up numbers portraying their brethren in a bad light. In any decent democracy the press would have rightfully exposed her and she would have been removed from office.

Murray would have faced jail time and the huns consigned to history.

The disappearance of hate crime statistics and continual refusal to confront the countries racist and sectarian history by trotting out hun apologists to obfuscate.

It does not need a concerted effort to besmirch us just a loosely connected bunch of bigots approved by a country where the vast majority of the population despises our existence.

Hooligans are still a problem here in England although the problem is very much under-reported – can’t damage the reputation of their precious Sky product, can we now.

Their attacks can be life altering. An example is a local guy from near where I live being assaulted and left with brain damage after going to see Cambridge Utd play Southend two years ago. The culprits were recently sentenced to between two and five years but Simon Dobbin won’t walk or talk again.

People that go out to assault other football fans really are the lowest of the low.

  15. Looking ahead to the game tomorrow night I’m almost certain that this will be operation frustration as far as Rosenborg’s tactics are concerned, it worked for them at Celtic Park and they will try it again. Suck us in and hit on the break and even playing for extra time and penalties. I don’t agree with Brendan that they will come out of their shell and leave space. Great pity that our full squad was not available for the game last week and hopefully Leigh will be fit. It was only the width of the upright that saved Rosenborg from going out of the competition to Dundalk in the final minute of extra time. If we can do a Dundalk and finsh normal time at 1-1 that will do.

Some people I’ve met over the years from Newcastle and Sunderland were extremely antagonistic towards Scotland and I can’t understand why . People from the North East of England have more in common with Scots than they do with Southern England.

I was in London the night Germany knocked England out of Euro 96. Our hotel was in the Strand. There was a guy from Sunderland in the hotel bar we were watching the game in. He approached my colleague and I , we thought to noise us up . Instead , he said he was supporting Germany against these , in his words, Southern tory so and so’s.

  21. Im looking for Celtic to shoot a bit more near the opposition box than they do when we often look to pass, if Leigh is playing from the start he has an incredible shot bends swerves dips and loads of power, SA also has a fair dig and we know what SS can do, so get some shots in on that keeper he had an easy time here. I still think we need to score twice to go through

  27. Seven student Catholic priests wearing black clerical clothing were asked to leave a pub because bar staff thought they were in fancy dress and on a stag party.

The seven seminarians had repaired to the City Arms pub in Cardiff to celebrate a colleague’s ordination with a few pints of beer. But bar staff, who were worried they were a bunch of lads likely to become lairy, told them: “Sorry gents – we don’t do fancy dress or stag dos”.

The group failed to convince staff their outfits were genuine and were about to try their luck at another of the Welsh capital’s watering holes when staff finally realised they were telling the truth, invited them back in and treated them to a round of drinks.

Matt Morgan, the assistant manager, apologised for the mistake. He said: “They were all dressed in their black and white clothes and the staff thought they were on a stag do.

“We do have quite a few issues on the weekends with parties wearing fancy dress so it is our policy to turn them away. I started to realise that they were quite serious and in the end we invited them in and gave them a free round of drinks.”

The group laughed about the mix-up, especially when it emerged that one of the party was called the Rev Robert James, sharing a name with one of the pub’s most popular ales – the Rev James.

We are in a society where laws are not fairly enforced. This presents problems for both clubs but will cause repeated pain at Ibrox as crime in the Boardroom encourages crime in the stands and beyond.

I think the problem I have about tomorrow is a simple one – if we don’t have a centre forward , there’s no one for jf to aim for, for ss to play off – for sa to pick up rebounds off- with LG I think we’ll get scoring chances and tr will be in his proper place

Was impossible to get shots of last week as the last third was crowded.

    by them and us.

Not often Brendan gets his tactics wrong but last week his system negated any chance of that.

Armstrong can shoot from around 25 yds and so can Rogic and NT’cham.

Brendans choice of playing Rogic higher had the effect of blocking space that Armstrong and Nt’cham could have exploited and Rogic had no time and space so constantly gave the ball away.

Our only decent shot was by Armstrong after subs and Rogic moving to a deeper role.

Hopefully we have learned lessons from last week.
