Coaching, Brendan’s open canvass

580

Apologies for recent radio silence.  Lots going on with some weighty matters which will soon be of interest to you, unfortunately didn’t have time to blog for a few days.

So much going on simultaneously but I can’t really focus on anything with the daunting evening ahead tomorrow. Season Two of the Brendan Rodgers era will be considerably influenced by the events in Trondheim. Rosenborg are a shadow of their former glory, but Celtic must patch a team together and win (or secure a score draw) in Norway to reach the Champions League group stage.

Most Celtic fans I speak to expect us to win the game, but we’re an optimistic lot (cough). Let’s hope that’s based on sound reason.

I was surprised to hear Shaun Maloney has been speaking to Brendan Rodgers about a youth coaching role at Celtic. Shaun was a rare graduate of the Celtic youth system under Martin O’Neill, breaking through as an 18-year-old in 2001. He will also know more about Lennoxtown than practically any player, as he gorged on gym time there during lengthy periods of injury, while others were resting.

Does he have what it takes to be a good youth coach? This is a difficult one to answer. Look east. Ian Cathro had an exemplary record as youth and assistant coach under some talented managers, assisting at Valencia and Newcastle. But Cathro’s success was down to the management structure he flourished under. On his own, at Hearts, he perished. Sacked four days before the league kicks off.

If Shaun joins the Celtic coaching setup he will begin a new tutelage under Brendan Rodgers. The manager may be looking for an intelligent, open, canvass, to work with.

    Fan-a-tic,

Sorry to hear about your nephew.

I am sure we’d all be grateful if you could keep us updated on his recovery and, if it is not sub judice, the progress through the courts of those arrested.

    The truth will out.

    Hail hail

Tonight’s only CL Q3 Champions route tie saw seeded side Qarabag (Azerbaijan) Progres (couldn’t resist it) against Tiraspol (Moldova) 2-1 on aggregate.

Qarabag drew home leg 0-0 and scored late in each half over in Moldova. Won through despite last gasp penalty by home team.

Sounds like a plan (apart from the late penalty) !

Apart from a 2nd half when our ‘second string/development squad’ conceded 4 goals against a strong Lyon side (on day after Linfield away tie), in the 9 games played this season (6 friendlies and 3 CL games) we have only conceded 1 goal – a penalty against Rapid Vienna.

So just 1 goal conceded in 8 1/2 games whilst scoring 22 – I feel positive about tomorrow night !

As a general point to anyone, why is Cathro getting so much stick? It didn’t work out for him but I found him to be generally inoffensive. What did he do to upset so many neutrals?

*he didnae do anything tae upset the neutrals but he did allegedly turn doon sevco.

So he went fae the bestest young coach in the “world” who was heading for the “toppermost of the poppermost” © John Lennon tae a breest.

Cheers BB. I keep myself informed. Looks legit to me but you’re right, I wouldn’t act on this alone.

Ok fine, his squad, his prerogative. But, if that is your approach then you better have a Plan B. That is, like Roberts last year, a player trained and prepared to fill into that role when required. He tried Rogic without any apparent evidence that would work (maybe the odd training session?). In the home leg we looked under prepared for the task despite having a week knowing no striker available. But anyway, if that is the strategy for the season, then be prepared to have to implement it against a CL Group team. So therefore give the alternate time in meaningful games.

    Its amateurish frankly. HH

It’s funny how many actions that take place in Scotland can be explained by “the hoards didnae like him”.

Cathro will walk back into a coaching role in England….and he’ll always be a better manager than Kris Boyd….

Bayern getting shredded down the right side of their defence.

Cathro didn’t fit the old-school style of chase them up sand dunes till they puke up then kick them up the arse. Then everybody can’t figure out why we’ve gone 20 years without qualifying for a tournament!

He looks as if he will be joining Wolves coaching staff imminently.

    Hail Hail.

  14. Never was as mad at watching a football game in my life!

The game was at Celtic Park 1999- the day the liquidated club clinched the league title. As far as I know everyone of their players were illegal and yet even though the world and its mother knows the scale of the cheating they have not been punished. The extinct club retains that record. Heartbreaking too watch two of Celtic’s player’s being redcarded by Dallas and punished afterwards while the liquidated club went unpunished. The whole bloody team should have been red-carded

  15. Celticfan1961 on

Griffiths got it wrong with that comment.

He should have said “Yer clubs deid ,beat it”

    Then “RIP”

    And then blessed the guy.

Now that would have been hilarious :)

    Rosenberg 0-0 Celtic (agg: 0-0).

Celtic qualify on away positive psychological approach counts double rule.

I think Celtic will win by a margin tomorrow night.

All the pre season is done ,all the players are fit Brendan knows what we lacked in the previous game and will show his true management capabilities by putting a confident team on the park which will win by 3 goals.

With all the negative media spin the last week they might just have spurned The Hoops on for a top performance.

Oh how will the Daily Record manage to sell ANY newspapers if Celtic win????

  19. “So, Brendan, your heart must have been in your mouth when Scott Sinclair stepped up to take that late penalty”

“Yes, at 0-0 we were obviously hoping he’d miss it, as we wanted to go over there having to win, with no advantage whatever in terms of being ahead in the tie. However, it is what it is, and we’ll just have to hope for better luck in a week’s time, now that we’re behind, psychologically speaking”.

I went out with a citeh fan yesterday (Peking Garden in Stockton : amazing !) – he knows oaddy won’t get a game for them – he says they chuck loads of youth on the scrap heap and he’ll end up at sheffield wednesday on a good day – it’s a real pity.
