Competing with the crazies

1382

News that Hull City had a £6m bid for Robert Snodgrass accepted took the wind out of my sails this morning.  Snodgrass was one of the outstanding performers for clubs in the bottom half of the English Premier League last season, so it’s easy to understand his ticket price, despite only having a year left on his Norwich City contract.

He is a Celtic fan and has not hidden his desire to play for the club, but Hull City (good grief) are now bidding £6m for players from relegated clubs, after spending £8m on a Spurs squad filler.

This all begs the question, can we afford to compete with Hull City?  Probably, yes, but we can no more afford to splurge £14m on a couple of players than Hull, who a year ago were reporting debts close to £80m.

We’re operating in an environment where indirect competitors for players are spending unsustainable amounts of money, pretty much like Rangers did for 20 years under Sir David Murray.  For a few years after Fergus left, we played the same game as Rangers, running up millions of pounds of losses year after year, before pulling away from the edge, while they kept the pedal to the metal and careered into liquidation.

The decision not to match the Bank of Scotland money flowing into Rangers cost us trophies, and caused a great deal of dispute in the Celtic family, but story ended sweetly.  So, so, sweetly.

The crash may never hit England, but the job for Celtic is to find a way of remaining competitive in the Champions League while matching income to expenditure.

    I take your point.

I don`t disagree with one word you say.

“Part of the fun of football is that everyone has an opinion.”

Where`s the fun in giving “the lepers of the Press” copy to use against us?

Why abuse the club we love by calling them stupid.

Why criticise our club for commercial and/or personnel decisions of which you have no knowledge and perhaps no understanding.

What makes you think you have the ability to give a multi million pound business advice?

Why would a Celtic supporter give our enemies ammunition to damage us?

They can invent reasons to attack us.

I never knew about the Celtic players who died in WW1, nor the fact that it was Celtic who played the Hearts charity game that funded their memorial. Thanks to Livibhoy and the other posters who enlightened me. No way should the club respond to that disgrace of an article – it would demean us and our glorious dead.

We really should reclaim the poppy debate (early start) by having a giant mural of James Stokes VC hanging from section 111 in November.

  12. With regards season ticket sales

I was in ticket office last week to buy MaestRio tickets.

I asked how season ticket sales had gone, and was informed, that for/at this stage, season ticket renewals were UP on same time last year.

I specifically asked if we had reached 40k yet, NO was the answer to that one

Kevj, if you are about re Hugh Keevins.

I know some of the Fallon family. The final straw for Celtic with Keevins was his misreporting of the reason a friendly between Sligo Rovers V Celtic was not played. I was told by one of the Fallon family what had happened.

The game was to be used a tribute to one of the greatest men and Celts we have ever had, with the proceeds going to Sligo Rovers, a local charity and the Celtic Foundation. Everything was agreed when another party got involved and wanted less money donated to charity. Celtic and Sligo Rovers were against this and no compromise was reached so both agreed the game shouldn’t go ahead if the original plans were not followed through. Keevins reported this as being Celtic’s fault which was completely false.

Keevins had upset the family of one of our real, true and proper legends through his economy of the truth. This contributed to his press privileges being withdrawn. He may have had Celtic in his heart, he possibly still has, but to use Sean Fallon, a wonderful human being, to have a pop at the club is disgraceful.

Thanks for the reply. Before the internet became widely used the Daily Record and the Sun ran anti-Celtic stories for fun. Thugs and thieves, the comparison of Fergus McCann and Saddam Hussein, Wim Jansen being labelled the second worst thing to happen since Hiroshima upon his appointment as Celtic manager….its what these rags do and have always done. They prostitute themselves for the sensationalist hun pound.

They would continue to do this even if Celtic cyberspace turned into North Korean state media and gave it “everything is wonderful, always”.

I don`t think that Celtic fans debating the direction of our club on forums such as this give the tabloid press any further ammunition to attack the club. The tabloid press don`t care what you, I or any other posters think, they`ll continue to peddle their usual pro-Sevco propaganda regardless.

I think we agree to disagree on this, but I`m sure we`ll agree that this will be a very interesting season ahead for Celtic. Hail hail.

  17. To my shame I had never really given much consideration to the Celtic players who lost their lives in WW1.

But after reading that article by Gary Ralston in today’s DR I do now.

A truly incredible piece which belies belief.

Time for a memorial to those brave bhoys perhaps.

  19. Have to disagree Keevins is now well beyond shock jock territory and is a sevco apologist and constant celtic agitator.

The club had plenty of ammo to ban him prior to the terrible Sean Fallon story.

His game predictions in most cases involve a Rangers / sevco cruise and celtic struggle. His constant sniping and applying pressure on new celtic players and managers is what really gets me tho.

Could go on forever about that coward.

Good news on the season ticket sales. These are very hard times for alot of ordinary fans and to hear that sales are up this year on the same time last year is very encouraging.

For alot of fans who work and basically live week to week on modest wages season ticket is probably their single most expensive purchase of the year so for so many to have already mde the commitment shows a section our core support is still willing to put the club above luxuries in life.

I know of one addition to the list of season ticket holders, for past few months I’ve been on week to week contract and yeterday was asked if I’d consider going “on the books”. While it’s not the greatest job in the world it give me a bit of security which enables me to make financial decisions that otherwise I’d be unable to make, so instead of purchasing tickets on an almost weekly basis I will now be a season ticket holder again, I may also purchase a child’s one to share among my 3 grandkids.

Really looking forward to the new season and continuing with my meets at CQN corner with the likes of Dena, Weefra and all those great CQNers that help make this club so special.

The written media go with the mantra bad stories about us, good stories about the Ibrox crew, sell more papers. Econimically, I can understand that as Celtic fans are in the minority but won’t be in the next generation if the Green Brigade banner was right.

However, there are press peepul who hide behind this to have a go at us at any oppurtunity. Even ‘non’ stickies like Young, Waddle and Leckie are far more critical of us than everything else that is staring them right in their coupons.

Twentyfirst of may, yourself ,Delaney’s & myself had a discussion a few weeks ago about that marvellous 4 3 game at Tynecastle. Danny & Kenny were at their very best that day. Pat Stanton and the buzzbomb also played a big part with their experience and ability. The Hearts fans were in some shock at the end after being 3 1 up at one point of the first half. My sympathy for them was so sincere lol.
