Competing with the crazies

1382

News that Hull City had a £6m bid for Robert Snodgrass accepted took the wind out of my sails this morning.  Snodgrass was one of the outstanding performers for clubs in the bottom half of the English Premier League last season, so it’s easy to understand his ticket price, despite only having a year left on his Norwich City contract.

He is a Celtic fan and has not hidden his desire to play for the club, but Hull City (good grief) are now bidding £6m for players from relegated clubs, after spending £8m on a Spurs squad filler.

This all begs the question, can we afford to compete with Hull City?  Probably, yes, but we can no more afford to splurge £14m on a couple of players than Hull, who a year ago were reporting debts close to £80m.

We’re operating in an environment where indirect competitors for players are spending unsustainable amounts of money, pretty much like Rangers did for 20 years under Sir David Murray.  For a few years after Fergus left, we played the same game as Rangers, running up millions of pounds of losses year after year, before pulling away from the edge, while they kept the pedal to the metal and careered into liquidation.

The decision not to match the Bank of Scotland money flowing into Rangers cost us trophies, and caused a great deal of dispute in the Celtic family, but story ended sweetly.  So, so, sweetly.

The crash may never hit England, but the job for Celtic is to find a way of remaining competitive in the Champions League while matching income to expenditure.

You never answered my question mate regarding the definition of your personal support.

When you post ‘I support Celtic’ what exactly do you mean?

    ========================

Pointless exercise, tried it before. Its easy to put down others without offering alternative solutions to problems not affecting you when you’re lying on a beach and there isn’t much coming out your own pocket, isn’t it macjay?

    ————————————————————————————————————————-

So why indulge in pointless exercises?

    ========================

I didn’t ask you that again, I made another observation, which you chose to ignore. I wonder why.

    ————————————————————————————————————————

Well, traditionalist 88,I feel it`s good policy to ignore trivia.

    Perhaps that`s where we differ.

SO thi sdebate all revolves around me saying Celtic were stupid for not offering him a contract? That makes me a hun? Struggling to get your logic there mate.

Calling them stupid doesnt mean im attacking the board or Celtic im expressing an opionion on a decision they made which i believe to be stupid! seems fairly straight forward!

I say well done to the Beatty family for rejecting the opportunity to run away and join FIFA’s circus, instead putting their own holiday first.

So your definition of a supporter is someone who doesn’t question things they believe the club do wrong?

    Is that correct?

So by definition you consider yourself a better supporter?

  8. DD / PL / the ‘bored’ urny Celtic. Right?

March 1992 – before yet another Celtic AGM

a ‘rebel’ shareholder said – “No matter what the outcome is, after tonight’s EGM one thing must be remembered and that is that – ‘You’ are Celtic. Not the Kellys, the Whites or the Grants or Dave Smith who, came from nowhere and will go back to nowhere. It’s ‘Your’ club and don’t ‘you’ EVER forget that.”

Brian Dempsey and Matt McGlone won the hearts and minds of the Celtic support to, enable the ‘rebels’ to drag Celtic into the new world.

How long did the ‘rebels’ last when McCann took control?

Where are all the ‘rebels’ now?

Every ‘rebel’ needs a tyrant though, not from within. imho

  9. ger57

Nevertheless, there is a relation between the number of caps they got relative to each other.

The bigger players (Johnstone, McNeill, Murdoch, Gemmell and Lennox) got more caps than our so-called journeymen (Clark, Craig, Auld, Chalmers).

I am well aware of the reasons why Celts did not earn more caps (and SFA prejudice was only one factor).

Nonetheless, my simple point stands- We were palpably poorer, in European Standards, when Kev was attending regularly in the 80s and 90s, than we have been since the millennium. We now have 18 to 20 full internationalists, not just from the Scotland team but from a variety of teams of similar standing (Israel, Wales, Kenya, Norway).

It does not stand up to any scrutiny, to assert that we are downsizing to a poor level, unbecoming of Celtic.

The truth is we have been achieving great things for 14 years and we will find it hard to sustain our achievements unless we get a fairer playing environment.

It has not a lot to do with Board mismanagement

It has not a lot to do with managerial incompetence

It has not a lot to do with bad transfer policy

It has not a lot to do with Balance sheet worship.

It does have a lot to do with having to play in an environment where we are given less “free” money than 100 other European clubs, most of whom have a fraction of our support size.

It does have a lot to do with being restricted to practising competitive football against teams who can only afford to employ players from Div. Two and non-league in England to supplement their Scottish journeymen.

I will continue to enjoy these recent good times because I fear worse is to come if we do not get a move.

  17. Kev J

My last reply to you today:-

You sir, misunderstood / failed to accept the opinion that I hold which defines Peter Grant as a p#sh Celtic player.

No. Your point was accepted but I disagreed with it. Your “right” to see PG as a pish player was never once called into question. Your use of it as a hook to justify modern downsizing was, however.

You then engaged in – whataboutery – with 11 other Celtic midfield players, offered as some sort of improved fare over PG. Right?

You have learned the word “whataboutery” but you are mis-applying it. My use of the other modern day midfielders was germane, the opposite of irrelevant whataboutery, as they were used to show that we have bad and good players in all eras and we are no worse off, in fact I’d say better off, now than in the era when you chose to attend and support

The 11 other players are not included in my point. Right?

Correct! Well Done! they were, however, included in my point. See answer above

You then go off at tangents as an attempt at finding out, or rather, twisting to suit ‘your’ version of why I don’t go to CP anymore. Right?

And you were invited to correct me on what I had got wrong about your reasons but, again, in a response stating that i was wrong in presenting my views, you omit to give an alternative correct version of where I went wrong

All of that, cos I said Peter Grant was p#sh. Right?

No, that kind of nonsense neither interests or upsets me. You may be mistaking me for a Daily Record reader

It seems…your the guy with the beef. Right?

I’ve often wondered what will be the straw that breaks the camels back for Scottish football supporters. We have many clubs with a large core support but seemingly our football is only worth a tiny fraction of what it is a few hundred miles down the road.

The EPL is filled largely by regional clubs and you can survive comfortably with a crowd of 20k, never really doing anything but being cannon fodder for the few bigger clubs.

If things are to change for the better for Scottish football, and I think they will, fan power will again play a large part.

Its happening already imo, albeit slowly.

    HH

Yes, fan power is the only thing that could fix the ole wagon but, it wont! The fans of Scottish, Northern Irish & Welsh football should show a determination to prevent EPL & the Spanish Premirea Ligue clubs sucking up all their hard cash, so cancel your Sky, Virgin Media & BT subscriptions now. Why doesn’t our clubs deserve the same cash injections as those in England & Spain – after all, our money has the same value as theirs, doesn’t it?

With a combined population of 11 – 12 million I think we deserve a better deal. A deal which we will never get unless we are united to fight for it.
