Concerning Irish history

1604

When Celtic make their trip to the ‘neat little town they call Belfast’ (I’ve been off radar recently, assume it’s still described thus) they will have no reason to believe they are ready for a game of football which could determine the success or failure of the coming season.  Instead the players will share a degree of anxiousness.

Cliftonville rank about as low as is possible to get in European competition but they will be better than the Arbroath team which left Glasgow with a draw last season against a Celtic team who were motoring at the time.

We have some concerning history against the Irish.  Celtic’s first ever Champions League qualifier was against St Patrick’s Athletic in 1998.  The visitors left Celtic Park with a 0-0 draw before Celtic won 0-2 in Ireland.  In the 1979-80 European Cup Dundalk gave us a fright.  Celtic won the first leg 3-2, at home, but had to endure a nervous second half in Dundalk as the home side searched, in vain as it turned out, for the goal which would allow them to win the tie on away goals.

Anything less than 100% on Wednesday will see Celtic walk a tightrope………

The only way this makes sense is if they are getting funded by other than football related means.

My money would be on Pat Nevin and NI manager Michael O’Neill.

As BBC 6 counties doing it, wouldn’t be surprised if Kenny ( I know a player) Shiels is on.

    Morning All.

Back from France to find new names on the Ibrox board with none of the guys from a year ago remaining save Walter, no investigations by the SFA into anything that might be amiss down that way despite Malcolm Murray’s clear call for transparency and vigilance, no accounts ( as far as I know ) from Ibrox, a new Nomad for some reason, and a whole host of new signings etc.

Not sure where we are with Hearts, The Pars or anyone else.

Wouldn’t recognise the St Johnstone manager if he fell on me.

I am not sure what the new league is called or who runs it along with Doncaster.

Apart from the fact that I know Celtic are playing Cliftonville tonight and that Gordon Strachan manages the national team I know naff all about Scottish Football… or anything else for that matter!

Am I alone in this or is there some form of national ignorance afoot?

I guess they know they’ll be going into admin again, so might as well get in as many players as possible so they can make up the points deduction.

Hang on, have the all-new SPFL decided on points deductions for admin? Might we see it being reduced to a paltry 2 or 3???

Best post I read in a long time….pissed myself laughing reading it!!

    You forgot:

    11) Tito Villanova sold David Villa so he could assemble his dream front 3 of Messi, Neymar and McCourt!!

    12) Gary Hooper has been holding Anthony Stokes back (and with him now leaving) Stokes will score 50 goals this season (70 if the Elvis impersonators leave him alone!!)

Bond villains. Thousands in Ireland and Scotland currently attending marching parades impersonating a Bond villain. Can’t remember his name, but they wear bowler hats the same as he wore. Oh aye, got it, thousands of knob dobs.

  12. Ah things don’t really change do they?

The SFA decide not to investigate Huns cause they investigate themselves and ignore all the evidence to the contrary. It appears to be that Scotland is the only country to completely ignore the Internet and evidence of corruption. Amazing.

But perhaps more remarkably our own club is also ignoring it. It seems that celtic remain wedded to the old firm notion.

And what is celtic concentrating on? Well of course ensuring that both of their best players are sold while not having a replacement lined up. Ideal preparation eh……..

    Haven’t we been here before?

  13. Morning all! Scorchio today but heading up the Queens View to clear the head before the game tonight.

Belfast is a great city. Hope everyone enjoys the occasion and game.

  17. The worst pre season sequence of results and performances I can remember, a Celtic side disjointed and devoid.

NFL had better have had his thinking cap on how to negotiate this particular potential banana skin because, nobody can say for certain that Cliftonville in a competative game will be poorer that Sevastapol or Greuther Further in particular, and if we hear the fitness or it’ll be alright on the night excuses  one more time, we’ll surely puke.

No doubt the old guard will be rolled out, and at least they won’t then be hauled off again to let young, players then get a mauling, as happened in Berlin. Celtic have no settled side the new players are taking time to settle, although Mouyokolo could start.

Some of the established players better shape up, and if NFL doesn’t remind the side how to defend, find a group and format that resembles the side that beat Hibs a few short weeks ago, we’ll be off to a dreadful strugseasonal the season, with no excuses.

I share some of your concerns and can see a few goals tonight for both sides.

I reckon Celtic will sneak it tonight and take care of business next week at Paradise.

We mmust be ready for the next round though. The CL is our holy grail and we must be involved. I am concerned that Neil Lennon is saying the players are not as ready as they should be for this game. Is that not what Germany was all about?

I reckon it will be 4-2 Hoops tonight and a 3-0 at home.
