Concerning Irish history

1604

When Celtic make their trip to the ‘neat little town they call Belfast’ (I’ve been off radar recently, assume it’s still described thus) they will have no reason to believe they are ready for a game of football which could determine the success or failure of the coming season.  Instead the players will share a degree of anxiousness.

Cliftonville rank about as low as is possible to get in European competition but they will be better than the Arbroath team which left Glasgow with a draw last season against a Celtic team who were motoring at the time.

We have some concerning history against the Irish.  Celtic’s first ever Champions League qualifier was against St Patrick’s Athletic in 1998.  The visitors left Celtic Park with a 0-0 draw before Celtic won 0-2 in Ireland.  In the 1979-80 European Cup Dundalk gave us a fright.  Celtic won the first leg 3-2, at home, but had to endure a nervous second half in Dundalk as the home side searched, in vain as it turned out, for the goal which would allow them to win the tie on away goals.

Anything less than 100% on Wednesday will see Celtic walk a tightrope………

“The offer we’ve made is very good, especially as he’s in the final year of his contract. I respect the fact he’s a Celtic player & they are entitled to get the best possible deal but I also believe we shouldn’t go higher than what we have. Hooper is a player I like — but there are other players of interest who we can move for. I’m not aware of us being close to a deal with Celtic, despite reports. If there’s nothing doing over the next few days, I’ll be looking to move us onto other targets.”- Harry Redknapp.

trying to make us blink first. He’s our player so we will dictate the selling price.

Pretty certain he is going now (Hooper), and perhaps Norwich will yet come in with another “final offer” around £5.5m. Anyhoo…. no matter to us who he goes to, but the price does.

If Harry has other targets in mind who are 30 goal a season men, and he can get them for £5m, whats he waiting for?

    Rhetorical question. He wants Hooper.

    Our gaff, our rules Harry.

Exactly if these clubs can’t meet Celtic’s value of the player, then let them look somewhere else and if no one matches our price then the player stays and if he don’t like it a wee spell in the development team will sort him right out….

Just so I’m clear; when rangers used to play Linfield and, more recently when sevco went over to play them, was there the same level of caution about Tims’ behaviour? Did they have to care about wearing colours etc? Jist asking.

Should be some day here, hopefully everything goes well and we have a wonderful occasion. Any travelling fans heading to the Antrim Road before the game, come and say hello in Cassidy’s. Myself and a few lurkers should there from around 4ish. I imagine they are cueing up now for breakfast(best in Belfast).

Have a great day!! 3-1 hoops will do nicely (hopefully the reds score 1st, to give their fans a cheer)

Just so you are clear Doc, the answer is an obvious NO, but you knew that already.

I hope they are well corralled tonight and don’t have any impact at all on our party with our brothers from Cliftonville.

in agreement with your sentiments, though I have predicted 2-1 to the hoops, however, I’d rather we scored first.

I have to monitor my blood pressure daily and report to the doc. This morning my reading was 140/115. Not good, and still 11 hours to k.o. , soooooooo, can we forget that bit about the reds scoring first if ya don’t mind! I don’t think my Omron M2 BP monitor is calibrated to handle such events as us going 1 down.

  11. there will be thousands of local Celtic supporters heading to this game from all four corners of Belfast, I expect to see many of them in their colours in the city centre this evening.

it’s going to be a great occasion. can’t wait

  12. Hopefully a great night of football in store in Belfast.

Would like to see plenty goals and a nice atmosphere.

In other newsd Scholes was always a player I admired. His young lad is playing for Celtic – the Stalybridge variety!

Football fans can bid on auction website Ebay to play in the same team as Paul Scholes after the retired Manchester United star signed up for a charity game to raise money for his son’s football team Stalybridge Celtic Juniors.

I usually want the Celts to win by the approved 5-0 but tonight I’d settle for a scoring draw, and everyone attending Solitude getting home in one piece.

  16. THE SFA have told Rangers that the ruling body won’t be launching a further enquiry into last year’s takeover of the club by the consortium fronted by Charles Green.

Revelations of taped conversations between discredited former owner Craig Whyte with Green and business partner Imran Ahmad prompted then chairman Malcolm Murray to commission an independent investigation of that buy-out by law firm Pinsent Mason.

Although their report cleared Green (who stood down as chief executive in April) and Ahmad (removed as finance director at Ibrox the same month) SFA CEO Stewart Regan claimed in May that they may launch their own investigation. “We have asked a number of specific questions relating to what went on in the period leading up to liquidation and the period surrounding the transfer of membership,” he said. “There are some very specific questions we have asked that require some very specific answers. If we don’t get those answers, we reserve the right to further investigation.

“The nature of the questions we have asked relate to the links between Green, Ahmad and Whyte, the details surrounding money that was lodged in Ahmad’s mother’s bank account and various conversations that allegedly took place.”

However, it emerged last night that the SFA have decided that there is no case for Green and Ahmad to answer. On the basis of the evidence they have seen from the Pinsent Mason findings, they have ruled that there is no requirement for the issue to be referred to compliance officer Vincent Lunny.

  17. Auld Harry boy blowing his trumpet AGAIN, Harry is a barrow boy (wideoh) he has had more clubs than Jack Nicholas, but in saying that I do warm to him, a loveable rouge you might say, English FA hate him.

  18. Twists :))

we can’t be having that BP to high today, just chill and relax, or Chillax as they now say. We will be to strong for a spirited C’ville. Far superior players all over the park. Just for you we will go 2up, give them a lifeline, then seal the tie with 10 minutes to go. Everyone will be happy with that, including your doctor:)

You missed the first line: “on the same day as Celtic begin their European campaign, we have been sent a press release which states….”

  20. I still cannot believe the amount of drivel being spouted regarding the threat of violence to supporters attending tonight’s game. I am sure that ALL Celtic fans from the UK are fully aware of the demography of Belfast. As Martin O’Neill said Glasgow mirrors Belfast in a lot of respects. Just as much chance of running into a rabid loyalist mob in Glasgow as you do in Belfast. Simple advice if you do not know where you are going – take a taxi – recommended Taxi companies listed on Cliftonville web page.

    Oh well that’s ok then.

Perhaps this self policing idea will catch on. The next time Lenny is due to attend a disciplinary hearing, he should just pay me to investigate his behaviour. I’ll then decide he has no case to answer. Seems fair enough.

I was so looking forward to hearing Bomber standing on the steps of Ibrox hollering a new version of ” where are the title deeds”, ……….namely………….., “where are the deed titles”.

I see Jabba getting good press today, all is well at RIFC no bad stories, honestly pass the sick bowl, it’s all in the timing of the stories, catch you with your eye off the ball it used to work, but then came Timternet, SFA. Not fit for purpose an embarrassment to us all who only asked for a level playing field, and rules to be played by, AGAIN they spit in our well, SHOCKING.

BTW – for fun (and to hopefully raise some money for TKF) I am going to place a bet for TKF on every matchday this season. Maybe on a nag, maybe on the footy. I’ll keep a running balance for the season and see where it takes me. Hopefully I will have a few quid to hand over.

Today’s bet is a £5 win on Celtic to win 3-1 @9/1. Hopefully I can start with a £50 return.

  27. Hi all long time lurker so my first post. I have a spare ticket for the match tonight if there are any takers.
