Concerning Irish history

1604

When Celtic make their trip to the ‘neat little town they call Belfast’ (I’ve been off radar recently, assume it’s still described thus) they will have no reason to believe they are ready for a game of football which could determine the success or failure of the coming season.  Instead the players will share a degree of anxiousness.

Cliftonville rank about as low as is possible to get in European competition but they will be better than the Arbroath team which left Glasgow with a draw last season against a Celtic team who were motoring at the time.

We have some concerning history against the Irish.  Celtic’s first ever Champions League qualifier was against St Patrick’s Athletic in 1998.  The visitors left Celtic Park with a 0-0 draw before Celtic won 0-2 in Ireland.  In the 1979-80 European Cup Dundalk gave us a fright.  Celtic won the first leg 3-2, at home, but had to endure a nervous second half in Dundalk as the home side searched, in vain as it turned out, for the goal which would allow them to win the tie on away goals.

Anything less than 100% on Wednesday will see Celtic walk a tightrope………

Never said McFadden was going to be Lubo but a smallish outlay on wages could have seen a decent return in terms of goals & entertainment. Thats all.

  3. Auldheid, i was thinking of another revenue idea which might tie in nicely with the new developments. In Dublins Croke Park , ive been there many times they have the Emirates Sky Tour which means fans can walk round the top of the stadium and get a good view over Dublin, presume same could be done at Parkhead cost €25 !!! Wouldn’t take much to set up, get a sponsor and charge people to go on it, simples…..

McFadden is a seat filler for Motherwell .. But not Celtic.

To be fair, he looks class, read about him before as the man who got Monaco promoted but won’t play much due to falcao? Stats impressive (over 1 goal every 2 games) and good age at 27.

    Only £3m surprises me

Only point I’d make is he’s a strong player, looking similar to Balde? I still think we’d need a 25-30 goal a year man as well if we got him, to replace Hooper (29 & 31 goals last two seasons), toure only got 18 last year in France’s second division.

In saying that Doyle only managed 9 last year!

Would you take both for combined £5m?

  6. 16 roads - Neil Lennon walks on water. on

Back home there now, drunk as the proverbial cant – Should have learned the Scottish based Tims can drink the best of them to a standstill – and for all the scare mongers – especially the Belfast ones, whom should know better – catch yerselfs on da fk ffs.I wore my Lisbon Lions t-shirt on purpose, and walked the length and breath of Belfast city centre, not only to annoy any zombies that may have been around – and there wasnt feckin one – but to prove a point, that Cliftonville clown – its our feckin city,we wear the green & white…all day long. GetaGripCsC. Be seen in green – we are the Celts!!

  7. Patrick27, like your thinking , however what about Toure and Charlie Austin for £6m combined £0.5m more than we are due to get for hooper!!! I’d be delighted with those two, i thought some of the skill shown by Toure was far superior to what Hooper has shown. So i think there is life after hooper we just have to find it.

If McFadden stays fit he will easily get 15+ goals, and all for little £

    Whats not to like?

  9. 16 roads , sounds like you were defeated by the scots, hope thats a good omen for tomorrow!!!. Great that you belfast bhoys can leave the house and see celtic in your own city, some we payback for all the support you have given over the years. Hope you have a great time, by the sounds of you the partys well started.

    Hail Hail

  10. If we are looking for a striker to replace Hooper that could score 25 SPL goals and who is relatively young with good potential to get better Leigh Griffiths is worth the risk.

We need to get Hooper replacement right and get Stokes signed up.

Buying strikers has not been a strong point for us recently, it’s a really worry.

  11. Suttons Volley, i agree but something went wrong the last time he was looked at and he went to sunderland, i think someone at celtic is a tad upset imo!

  12. Kevtic, i think Griffiths is a goods player a bit like riordan but with his colourful private life he might be too much of a hot potato….

  13. Stoap it!!!!!!

    I mean really????????

LEIGH GRIFFITHS IS NOT GOOD ENOUGH FOR CELTIC

paolosboots – I used to think a could drink with the best of them squire – should have learned from Bobby M shindig. The craic was incredible though. The marra is gonna be insane! :)

  20. Would Messi be good enough?

Unfortunately we have to be realistic.

Murphy, Mo Bangura, Fortune were not good enough but we still bought them.

  21. Patrick27, can’t see £4m now after failed medical, alot of clubs will be scared off and he & his club will be on backfoot i think.

  22. Would anyone give Spartak a cheeky £3-4m bid on Aiden???? He can be that left sided creative midfielder Lenny wants! He’s already made his big dosh in Russia, last year of contract, we’ll give him a good wage (£20k+), why not?

  23. 16 roads - Neil Lennon walks on water. on

Tiny Tim – Taking over this crazy wee town the marra mo chara.Gwan the AK47 Markets crew lol :)

    Sorry for delay.At work.

    Selling Gary creates a problem.

Of course the money men have to assess the comparative financial benefit of better,IMHO,prospect of progress in theE.C.L.,and the attendant income gain, with loss of transfer fee.

Damned,by some,if they do and damned by others if they don`t.

Agreed that a reassessment of pre-season fixtures is necessary.

My Tim mad son took four Aussie mates along to the game in Berlin.

The party was magic, but the four hoped for converts may not eventuate.

  26. Kevtic, im not raining on your parade mate, he had a brilliant season but just think non football reason rule him out as well as 2 pending court cases, just saying.

  29. 16 roads - Neil Lennon walks on water. on

ACGR – are you still on holiday chief? Pity ye were not over here mate – ye woulda been like a king,fs…seriously.

  30. Bould bhoys

No EPL clubs have moved for him, I’m sure Aiden wouldn’t mind a move back to Paradise!

  31. Patrick27, Austin if he passes medical is exactly the same stats as hooper had when he signed for us, and both were high scorers in poorly performing teams. Aidan would be good signing but Lenny & him had a tempestuous time together would be interesting to see where that goes. Forrest imo is far too injury prone and disappears too often for my liking.
