Concerning Irish history

1604

When Celtic make their trip to the ‘neat little town they call Belfast’ (I’ve been off radar recently, assume it’s still described thus) they will have no reason to believe they are ready for a game of football which could determine the success or failure of the coming season.  Instead the players will share a degree of anxiousness.

Cliftonville rank about as low as is possible to get in European competition but they will be better than the Arbroath team which left Glasgow with a draw last season against a Celtic team who were motoring at the time.

We have some concerning history against the Irish.  Celtic’s first ever Champions League qualifier was against St Patrick’s Athletic in 1998.  The visitors left Celtic Park with a 0-0 draw before Celtic won 0-2 in Ireland.  In the 1979-80 European Cup Dundalk gave us a fright.  Celtic won the first leg 3-2, at home, but had to endure a nervous second half in Dundalk as the home side searched, in vain as it turned out, for the goal which would allow them to win the tie on away goals.

Anything less than 100% on Wednesday will see Celtic walk a tightrope………

Greenyin, I don’t know they’re the same poster. There was a real slim shady on the old DR site, before the fat journo apologist pulled the plug on the site when his team went tiitsup.

If it is him ,I wish him and his family the best in life.

He was Celtic, and still is.

BT, no. I didn’t golf with TET. He shat himself on sunday morning (really he did, don’t laugh). He called off because of severe food poisoning and was in hospital until Monday afternoon. You cant take any chances when you boulder your huggies at his time of life. Besides, golf shorts would have been a disaster.

The meet has been rescheduled for September, I’ll bring him a big TET sized nappie:-)

CELTIC boss Neil Lennon yesterday told how he hopes tonight’s Champions League qualifier in Belfast is “remembered for the all the right reasons”.

The Hoops take on Cliftonville close to where rioing has erupted in the city.

Scots police have been drafted in to help their Northern Irish counterparts.

And the 2,500 travelling fans have been warned to take special precautions before and after the crunch tie.

    Confident … Neil Lennon

But Lennon said he is confident the game will pass off without incident.

He added: “Preparations have gone really well so far. It hasn’t had an impact on us and I am hoping the night will be remembered for all the right reasons.

“There might be things (extra security) going on in the background, but as far as we are aware this has just been a normal Champions League trip.

“We have been really well looked after.”

Warning … fans have been told not to walk to ground

Hoops supporters have been warned not to walk to the ground ahead of the game amid fears loyalist protestors could target them. Cliftonville spokesman David Begley advised them to take public transport instead. And he added: “It’s probably best to avoid wearing colours into the city centre.”

The violent protests were sparked by a ban on an Orange Order parade along Crumlin Road in the Catholic Ardoyne neighbourhood — less than a mile from Cliftonville’s 5,000-capacity Solitude stadium.

Yobs have been targeting police since Friday, with officers pelted with a barrage of petrol bombs and other missiles.

An MP and 71 cops have been injured in the disturbances, which have seen more than 60 people arrested.

Trouble has spread across Belfast and to nearby towns.

Terry Spence, chairman of the Police Federation for Northern Ireland, said: “The match itself is not contentious.

    Training … team at Solitude

“The problem’s getting people to and from the ground safely. The game has been factored into the equation, but it’s an added problem we can do without.”

Paul Brennan. of supporters site Celtic Quick News, said: “You don’t know how these situations will develop. But I’ve spoken to a lot of fans, and they aren’t expecting many

BOBBY MURDOCH’S CURLED-UP WINKLEPICKERS ……picking up from yesterday morning…..it’s a real shame we’re not going to see Virgil tonight.

Ambrose, according to reports is being rushed back into the team, perhaps he’ll make a better impression this time following his Nigerian duties.

Unfortunately I’ve a golf commitment on Saturday so I’ll miss the game at Brentford.

To all those going to tonight’s game stay safe and pay heed to the advice, travel to Solitude by taxi or public transport.

We have a team of international players. You don’t become an international in any country without being able to distinguish the importance of performing when it counts. Forget about other meaningless results. The guys who pull on the Hoops tonight will be delighted to see Vic and Hooper leaving. They will see this as an opportunity to press their case.

Respect to our opponents but none of them are near the level of Celtic players.

I expect a comfortable win tonight.

This is a football day and posts about anything else are usually superfluous but this is too important to ignore.

This government’s onslaught on the NHS, that’s NHS England by the way, continues apace…

There had been speculation that 13,000 patients may have needlessly died since 2005 on the basis of figures from Sir Brian Jarman of Imperial College. But NHS medical director Professor Sir Bruce Keogh, who led the review, said it was “clinically meaningless and academically reckless” to try to quantify avoidable deaths.

Those in Scotland, Wales and NI need to keep an eye on what’s happening in their own backyards.

Why would the SFA waste it’s ill-gotten on enquiry into what it already knows? :-)

TSFM has already done a fantastic job in uncovering the slime trails left by the various slugs involved in dungheap. CF is showing a side of PR which is usually hidden from decent society.

Truth will out, the Scotsman is simply trying to sell to knuckledraggers who can read (or ‘dangerous intellectuals’ as they’re known on FF) with a ‘balance’ story.

Been looking back in the blog and saw some posts regarding Niall McGinn being a good ” Charlie Mulgrew ” option.

Could Be? also he is a true Celt and a nice guy: I was at the recent Convention in Vegas and on the morning of the Pool party I saw a young, with fairly heavy growth: “I know that face.” decided to go across and find out. ” Excuse me, I don’t want to be rude, but are you Niall Mc Gin.”

    “yes, I am.”

I had a really nice conversation with him for about 10 minutes. A much nicer Celt tha John Collins et al and a genuine Fan.

  21. Morning,

    Patrick

    good morning.

Curious as to your John Collins comment? Spent some time with him in the past and never found him to be anything more than polite and personable. Did I get him on several good days, or, did you get him on a bad day?

Or are you referring to his media manner?

    As I say curious.

  27. Morning all. A lot brighter down here at the moment.

The in-house Northern Ireland security expert of Radio Scotland was in fairly depressing mood this morning. He was warning all Celtic supporters from Scotland visiting Belfast today to be on their guard. He urged them not to wear the colours away from the ground, as there are supporters of another team and other teams (that’s how he afraid he himself is, as he wouldn’t mention thon deid team or Linfield) who would want to harm them. He also said that the Police would have to take extraordinary measures just to ensure that the team itself got to and from the game safely.

  28. twists n turns on

Talking of players who I/we have met, I did meet one ex Celt whom I found to be an arrogant so and so. Best not name him in the event that he is actually a good bhoy and I just caught him on a bad day, but the day I met him, he was with Deek Whyte, (so you know the era roughly) and whom I have to say was the complete opposite and an out and out gentleman that day.

Another who went out of his way in respect of making me feel welcome was big Packy Bonnar. A fine bhoy I have to say.
