CQN Magazine, Fit and Proper issue, out now!

323

With an eye on the interesting weeks and months that lie ahead, this month’s issue of CQN Magazine is titled Fit and Proper, as we investigate some of the goings-on in the game.  To give these times some perspective, we take you back to 1994, when our own club was on the verge of collapse.  It’s all there, including video of the legendary “Cambuslang is a reality”!

Celtic was rescued and rebuilt by the collective action of thousands of ordinary supporters, the active planning of a small number and the icy focus of Fergus McCann.  Fergus had his critics, and we recall some of the conflict here, but as Shakespeare said, “Cometh the hour, cometh the man”.  He was unquestionably the right man to relieve the old board of their duties.

This was an important time in our history so we’ll take any excuse to relive, recall and read over those times. Nor do we make any excuse for our alert focus on events elsewhere.

The story of other parts of Scottish football is important to us as we will have a roll in its future.  Celtic fans must be aware of the issues and be ready to voice their opinions should an opportunity come for clubs, the SPL or SFA to made a decision on how to pick up the pieces after a serious financial crisis at one or more clubs.  We cannot be asleep when the hour arrives.

There is tons more of the usual fare in the magazine, including analysis of our January signings, fans’ stories, a look back at our 65-year-old Polish heritage and some of the reasons why there may be a million football clubs in the world, but there’s only one Celtic.

Hope you enjoy it.  Thanks to everyone who has contributed or worked on it.

  1. Now for a shocker.

    Something positive from quonno.

    Fergus was a genius pure and simple.

    No debate. No arguments.

    ……..you forgot to say they are sh*te.

    That was implied.

    It’s all very well winning a tricky away tie, but at what cost if Black was to break someone’s leg? I feel a lot better about the tie knowing that their Terry Hurlock-impersonator is out.

    A.J.Cronin was a lfelong Dumbarton supporter-

    ‘Although the latter part of his life was spent entirely abroad, Cronin retained a great affection for the district of his childhood, writing in 1972 to a local teacher: “Although I have travelled the world over I must say in all sincerity that my heart belongs to Dumbarton…. In my study there is a beautiful 17th century coloured print of the Rock…. I even follow with great fervour the fortunes of the Dumbarton football team’

    Further evidence of Cronin’s lifelong support of Dumbarton F. C. comes from a framed typewritten letter hanging in the foyer of the club’s stadium. In the letter, written in 1972 and addressed to the club’s then secretary, Cronin congratulates Dumbarton on their return to the top division after an absence of 50 years and recalls his childhood supporting the Sons (the club’s nickname) and on occasion being “lifted over” the turnstiles (a common practice in times past so that children did not have to pay’

    Agree about Black. It won’t just be the mini huns fans who are upset he won’t play.

    The team are playing well, we just need to produce the killer touch in front of goal.

    I wonder what our goals to chances created ratio looks like?

    We have all seen the team struggle to get out of first gear (even during this winning streak) due to the fact that they feel they are going to win easily.

    Forgive me if I have mistaken you for the manager or one of the players but how can you possibly know that is a fact that the players think they are going to win easily. There are many reasons why teams performances dip during the season or even during a match. It might appear to an outsider that they look over confident but it may be down to how the opposition play against us. A team can be incredibly comfortable as we have in a number of games but it only takes a second to score a goal and ever so often the opposition will score against us. This has a two-fold effect.

    1.) The opposition get a bit more confidecne and start attacking a bit more;

    2.) Our players, mindful of the need to get the win retreat and appear to hold on to what they have.

    Add in the home support somethimes getting a bit anxious and that can transfer to the players.

    Look at the game against St Mirren a few weeks ago. I don’t know if its because its such a young team that doesn’t have an old head to lead them or what but it happens way to often

    Ok, so is it overconfidence or inexperience?

    No two games pan out in the same way. Our players have shown consistently over the past year or so that they are improving and are becoming more confident in seeing games out and getting the all important wins.

    Just catching up, for best advice I would need to know a few important details

    1) what do you drink?

    2) what age are you?

    My turn for the ‘jockey club bet this week’ thinking of going for Celtic minus 1 goal tonight 2/1 and more than 2.5 goals 11/10.

    Anybody think it’s a bad idea?

    Looks not a bad bet but I would consider Chas and Rogne as first goal scorers.

    Brown on the Pens is a decent bet with the cluggers they have at the back.

    Webster is a horrible player. Never forget the day he went out to break Agathe’s leg at Tynecastle. Zaluikas is always good for a card so a penalty could be in the offing tonight.

    Good luck with your bets though. Hope they both come in.

  11. Is Black definitely suspended?

    Brown mentions coming up against him in his pre match interview in an article posted on here late last night.

    I wonder what our goals to chances created ratio looks like?

    Funny you should ask. Just updating my spreadsheets on this and overall for the team it is:

    Shots – 288

    On target – 156

    Goals – 48

    30.77% of shots on target result in a goal.

    Only Motherwell (31.7%), St Johnstone (35%) and Dunfermline (40%) have a better record than us.

    Historical Stats

    2010/11 – 30.66% shots on target resulted in a goal;

    2009/10 (TM) – 21.12% shots on target resulted in a goal;

    2009/10 (NL) – 35.19% shots on target resulted in a goal;

    2008/09 – 26.8% shots on target resulted in a goal;

    2007/08 – 22.4% shots on target resulted in a goal;

    2006/07 – 27.9% shots on target resulted in a goal;

    He better be, as he promised Mr C Whyte that he’d do a homer for him tonight. Apparently Whyte has a property on Edmiston Drive that needs a quick spruce-up and a lick of paint before sale.

    The huns couldn’t get a shift out of Cousin first time round,he wont do it for 2k a week.

  16. Fighting the Fuzz – Black would be wise to stay well clear of that job! He will end up in court for unpaid paint fees!

    Impressive stats for Dunfermline!

    (Until you work out that they average under 3 shots on target per game)

    I understand 100% of Craig Whyte’s personal investment in Rangers (£1) has been spent on transfers.

    Skippy out for rest of the season,if Rasmussen is that far out the picture,a wee loan to ‘Boro might lessen the wage bill.

  21. I just do not see Hearts living with Celtic tonight. They are a poor team, in poor form and a club in complete disarray.
