CQteN St Pats, 1200 hungry kids

1134

Celtic Quick News will be 10 years old next year and to mark the occasion, through Mary’s Meals, we’re going to construct a kitchen and shelter facility at the Kholoni Primary School in Mchinji, Central Malawi, which currently has no food preparation facilities.

A brick-built building, the kitchen will consist of one main cooking area with two small locked storerooms. In one, firewood for the stoves will be kept and, the other will store food and utensils.  The kitchen will be fully equipped with stoves, pots, serving equipment, mugs and spoons and the 1221 children will be provided with a daily meal of a vitamin-enriched maize porridge.  The kitchen will also have teaching facilities, to allow it to be used as a classroom outside meal times.

17% of people in the world live in extreme poverty (less than $1.25 per day) but there is plenty of good news, the proportion of world living in this condition halved in last 20 years (this was a UN Millennium Development Target).  Life expectancy (at birth) of low income people in 1990 was 52, but in 2011 it was 60.  Infant mortality dropped by a third during this period and maternal mortality almost halved.

Since humans first walked the earth a significant proportion of them have lived in extreme poverty, but while someone once said, “the poor will always be with us”, for the first time ever the decades ahead could see all of humanity escape from extremely poverty.

Malawi, according to the UN the 17th least developed nation on earth, is one of the world’s extreme poverty front lines, but even here, the trend is encouraging.  In 1990 child mortality between 0-5 years was 244 deaths per 1000 live births.  By 2000 this had dropped to 174 per 1000.  Last year the figure was 71 deaths per 1000 from 0-5 years.  The UK passed that figure more than 70 years ago, but the rate of improvement in Malawi is nothing short of incredible.  It is fertile ground for the right kind of help.

Mary’s Meals, a Scottish charity established in 2002, feeds 822,142 kids in 16 countries every day.  They keep costs low and employ local staff in kitchens, ensuring 93% of money donated reaches those in need, possibly the highest rate of any comparable organisation.  It costs £7 for Mary’s Meals to feed a child in Malawi – for a whole year.  20% of Malawi’s children (600k) are fed by the organisation, often their only meal of the day.

In 2012, a sample of 44 schools found that enrolment had increased by 30% two years after the introduction of Mary’s Meals. Academic achievement improves too.  The benefit is not just escape from hunger, it is access to education for children who would otherwise have to work for food.  It also provides an increase in productivity and economic capacity when the children enter the workforce.

CQteN St Patrick’s Day Party

The kitchen will cost £7000 and I’ve told Mary’s Meals we’ll raise enough money by St Patrick’s Day, which gives us three months.  We have a lot of work to do but the focal point will be the CQteN Dinner on Friday, 14 March 2014, which will be the biggest and best St Patrick’s Day Party in Scotland.

We’ve hired the Kerrydale Suite at Celtic Park. Tickets are available for £50, tables of 10 are also available.  To reserve a ticket or table email me, celticquicknews@gmail.com.  The event has been discussed in the comments section for some weeks without a formal launch and we quickly sold out the smaller capacity of the Kerrydale Suite.  We have now taken the entire suite so additional tickets are available.

Between now and then there will be the odd auction to help us along, and we will continue to support the work of the Celtic Foundation (who have a Children’s Hospice Association Scotland auction on now), the Kano Foundation, and the many needy causes a lot closer to home than Malawi.

The UN are currently considering Development Targets for 2030, with the eradication of extreme poverty likely to feature.  Poverty is a complex subject, so even after 2000 years development, we know there will always be comparative poverty, but within our Generation of Domination, extreme poverty, less than $1.25 per day existence, could be eradicated.

There is no more appropriate way to mark the 10th anniversary of the blog.  This will be our payback for all the hours, days, weeks and months of pleasure (and toil) we’ve gotten out of the these pages over the years. Put 14th March 2014 in your diary, we’re having THE St Patrick’s Day party!

looks like you are getting your wish. There’s a whole section of them going.

    Good job too eh.

I heard that they did nothing but sit on their collective fat arses and hurl abuse at the team.

The moaning and disgraceful language emanating from them was atrocious.

If they weren’t going to show any support or at least join in the singing then why did they bother.

From the first minute to the ninetieth they’d sit. Arms folded big sour beaks. And thats even when we are winning.

And god help us when the opposition scored.

But sure wasn’t the section almost empty by the 75th minute any way.

Well shot of them I say.

Sure it will be like lifting a cloud from within the park.

    Hope you enjoy your day

Something nice? The fans, I love being a fan. I love how we rally against folk who would see us destroyed.

Roseanna Cunnningham on 23 June 2011 when the Emergency Bill was introduced said:

“I welcome the support that we have had for the

bill, most notably from the police, who will have to

respond to the legislation and deal with offenders.

The police are clear that we should have the new

powers in place by 23 July. That is why we have

brought forward the bill quickly and why we are

    asking Parliament to respond accordingly.”

So not only were the police the prime movers but they dictated the date by which it had to be in operation thereby ensuring a hurried law. What is it they say about laws made in haste?

  7. monteblanco,

I live in Aus together with many other Celtic fans, as I’ve said on here before, Celtic is the last thing I think about before I go to bed at night and the first thing I look for every morning. Sure we live here by choice but after many years, the passion does not diminish and there are rarely times when I would not rather be at a game, I try to make up by watching as many as possible, usually in the middle of the night and contributing to the club through CTV and a share in a season book for games that I generally would not be able to attend.

Aplogies, my point was not aimed at oversees fans in general, and I apologise again for any offence. My point was about people saying ‘MY’ club. An argument that rips my knitting. Especially when aimed at folk who turn up by people who don’t, whether they live in Dalmarnock or Dubia.

In fact one of the most uplifting books I have read recently was a book by Richard Purden, called ‘We are Celtic Supporters’ which gives accounts of what Celtic means to people all over the world.

If Tony Donnelly wants to read it, I suggest he takes his teeth out first, I wouldn’t want him grinding them as it is rich with what makes Celtic the club that it is. Full of ‘left wing/socialist’ togetherness and ideology, all over the world.

Not so the case in Scotland. Some here seem to have no problems with a fanbase of

20-30 thousand. As long as they are true fans mind you. Not like those 20-30 thousand missing fans who obviously weren’t real fans to begin with.

Thanks for the background info and,as usual, you have made me think.

I have lived and worked away from Scotland for nearly 20 years now, and not totally au fait with the political shenanigans that have gone on up there for at least 15 of these years.

From time to time something catches my attention, and the Offensive Behaviour Bill was one of these times.I haven’t heard one argument that convinces me this legislation is not fundamentally flawed.

I had no idea that McBride was a political chameleon until you mentioned earlier that he was perhaps trying to ingratiate himself with the SNP.I always thought he was a dyed in the wool Conservative and Unionist Bhoy.(I didn’t realise he left the Tartan Tories).

It’s making more sense to me now if I think of McBride as an opportunist like most of his type.

Hey big man, every day is a school day with you around….thank you for sharing.

Richard Purden gives his idea and opinions in books, I get that in here, I doubt very much if any book you say was a great read for you, would come close to me opening it, if fact I’d say there’s not a chance I would read it, each to there own mind you.

  20. As this blog approaches it’s tenth anniversary, it is a pity to look back at the posts over the last few hours and see so many related to politics and so little about what we do on the park.

Indeed, in many ways, the last few hours are typical of the direction this blog has been heading in the last year.

I can’t surmise all sides, but in my humble view, we have those who see us as the sporting wing wing of a political cause.

On both opposite and aligned we have the wind up crew whose motivations, I fail to understand.

Thankfully, we have the odd person who wants to talk about football.

Lastly, we have those who enjoy a laugh, a bit of camaraderie, and I notice are always quick to support the charitable side of this blog.

So in the interests of football, some post Barcelona thoughts.

With Europe out the way, I think the planning for next season’s campaign starts today and with this in mind

Sammy and Joe either sign a contract by end December, or we punt in January

Personally I like both, but I suspect both have been tapped up.

Pukki ,Boerrichter, Blade, Rogic and Biton I would play them in most game, assuming fit, until mid January. Point out they are playing for their futures, either with us or a second rate Dutch / Swiss etc team. If they ain’t doing it by by mid January, punt them

Send Dylan McGeoch out on loan, for a guy who looked very promising two years ago, his lack of progress is an embarrassment to our club.

Finally, Calum Mcgregor : 20 year old midfielder who has scored 10 goals in 21 games, in English lower leagues ?

  21. I concur with the people praising Charcoals. The food and service is outstanding! My last visit on Tuesday night was the best yet, I lost count of the free samples and drinks that the guys have my mrs and I. Thoroughly recommend it there.

Silly people like Tony Donnelly and I paddy are too dense to be able to argue in any meaningful way so they resort to saying they don’t care.

I repeat you are propping up sectarianism. Celtic – our club- is propping up and supporting sectarianism and the subjugation of Scotland’s catholic minority.

If you support the current board you are supporting that sectarianism.

Calum McGregor has the makings of a very, very good player.

Ticking along just nicely in a standard of football which is as good as most of the SPL.

He will definitely be in Celtic first team next season unless Lawell accepts an inevitable bid from an ambitious English club,as lots of scouts are guaranteed to be watching him most weeks.

    ……………………………..

Yes I have always thought that Stephen House (soon to retire?) was making a name for himself in order to get the top job in London or the consolation prize of the top job that was coming up as head of a unified Scottish Police force.

The other police officer who took a starring role (though not in typing) was House’s deputy at Strathclyde, Campbell Corrigan who headed up, or seemed to, FoCUS (Football Coordination Unit Scotland), the newly formed group which was in place before the OB Bill became an Act and this was a problem the police had a nice new unit and were waiting for the tools to go with it …..the OB powers.

  27. Clashcitybhoy

Personally I like both, but I suspect both have been tapped up.

Pukki ,Boerrichter, Blade, Rogic and Biton I would play them in most game, assuming fit, until mid January.

Whether we play those players or not depends on results. I’m a believer in momentum, and up until the Barca game, the 4-4-2 diamond v Hearts and Motherwell had been a revelation. Finally, Celtic had clicked – the passing, speed of thought, and level of understanding between players were a joy to watch. Even in the Barca game, the more we approached, through substitutions, the personnel in those matches, the better we got.

Stick with that until another SPL team exposes its flaws. Today, for example, go with:

    ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Forster :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

Lustig ::::::::::::::: Ambrose ::::::::::::::::: Van Dijk :::::::::::: Izaguirre

  30. Ability is obviously a major factor in gauging a players worth to any club, but commitment and grit are equally required. Too many fringe players happy to play out a game with no fire in their bellies has became the normal and they should be flushed out. I prefer a 100% effort kind of a player fighting for every ball than either a big time Charlie type or someone who raises their game during contract negotiations on the advice of some agent in the ££ shadows.
