Cringe-worthy SFA, pundits and fans don’t lay eggs

402

You wouldn’t announce an event, encourage others to sell tickets, without booking the venue. You just wouldn’t do it. These things have an order: book the venue, then announce the event. It’s a matter of courtesy to all involved, not to mention being an operational necessity.

Why then, do we have the unedifying scenario of Hamilton Accies releasing a statement to say New Douglas Park is unavailable for the date the SFA advertised a Scottish Cup game between East Kilbride and Celtic would take place? It’s just remotely possible that Accies have reneged on an earlier commitment given to the SFA, but the tone of their statement suggests otherwise.

This is for a game which is scheduled to take place one week on Sunday. Fans have to acquire and distribute tickets, travel arrangements have to be made, police and stewarding have to be booked (by East Kilbride, who are the home team, remember).

This should be a great day for the young club but it’s shrouded in considerable commercial uncertainty: how much will policing, stewarding and stadium rental cost? Who at East Kilbride will guarantees these bills and how? The police and host club may take a lax view on credit, but the stewarding provider won’t. What revenue can be expected? None of these issues can be known until a venue is found.

I’m not going to support Pat Nevin’s views, which offended Dundee manager, Paul Hartley on Sportscene at the weekend. I didn’t hear his comments, so cannot conclude if he was talking “absolute garbage”, or if Nevin had verged into the kind of territory which saw him issue an apology under threat of legal action last month. But I’m not convinced the scope of Hartley’s comments are appropriate.

Dundee lose goals. Lots of them. Their only clean sheet since 12 September came against Hamilton Accies last month. The objective facts suggest their defensive strategy is an appropriate subject for criticism. This season they lost 6 in one game against Celtic and 8 over two matches against Ross County.

Analysis and criticism is the domain of pundits and fans, even those, who Paul Hartley notes, have “never coached or managed a team”. Attacking the pundit (or the programme) is easier than explaining a (subjectively) poor defensive record, or keeping clean sheets, apparently.

Paul said “It’s not what it used to be like, away back in the 1980s when you wanted to sit up and watch Sportscene on a Saturday night”. Back then Archie Macpherson fronted the show. Archie told me about a similar run-in he had with Alex Ferguson, who angrily disagreed with the commentator’s view of a defensive infraction.

Archie’s view on his opinion being irrelevant due to his lack of coaching experience was memorable, “I’ve never laid an egg, but I know when I taste a bad one”.

The Foundation Zip Slide in Paradise takes place on 26 March, bookings are now being taken.  This time the slide is higher and longer, leaving the very top corner of the North Stand seating at the Lisbon Lions Stand end, diagonally crossing the pitch to land at the bottom of the Jock Stein Stand, at the South Stand end.

You don’t have a lot of time to get booked and start your fundraising, so get onto it now.  Sign up here.

This has to be challenged, it just can’t be left flying about up there, according to Broadfoot, we the fans won’t? So no one else will, so it’s up to every fan in Scotland to let this little Adolf know where they stand.

  2. NatKnow, whether Sportscene is good or bad is a side issue to the criticism of Dundee. Calling out the programme instead of addressing the point is what the Greeks called ad hominem.

TBJ, the only requisite is that they follow the same rules as everyone else. Same goes for The Flat Earth Society, who’s views are not a threat to anyone.

  3. North Lanarkshire District Council has just received an enquiry from a Mr. D. Broadfoot re the availability of parks at Espieside for the weekend after next.

The previous statement may or may not be true.

And that shouldn’t prevent the Daily Record from printing it.

I do think we need a massive change and I think next season if they come up will be a watershed moment for every fan in scottish football. We all walk away the lies die as well as long as we play along they will continue. –

Why now and why not 4 years ago?! They will find their level which will be nearer the bottom half than us and they may even go the way of the oldco. They are an irrelevance. Every other Scottish football fan knows they are a new club but there was always a chance they would make it to the top flight, I don’t get the mock horror on this point? Celtic aren’t trumpeting the ‘Old Firm’ and have no plans to. Surprising that they didn’t go bust when Green was found out but they don’t have the resources to sign players from Hibs or St Johnstone so their capitulation should be enjoyed when their fans get sick of struggling for top 6.

LNS, who isn’t a Lord while we are at it, so let’s call him WNS, is being used to justify this nonsense. He acted in a non-legal capacity in this circle of deceit.

Their arguments go round and round propping up each other like a laager drawn by Escher. They know that once the wagons have been breached then it’s all over for them.

If it takes crowd funding from supporters then I’m certainly up of it, even if it means my children’s inheritance and wine cellar suffering for it

Sorry your Patriots lost, in a match where defences ruled, but what a nail biter of a fourth quarter yet again in the play-offs, going right to the last few seconds.

And, what a show by Big Cam in the other Championship match to destroy the Cards, eh?

Out with the old, in with the new in the Superbowl then?

One of the anomalies arising from there being legal advice is they are same club I raised on SFM. I think it will be one of many causing a follow up.

The reference to legal advice on being the same club is very interesting. I suppose context is all, but if the advice is correct why did SFA tell Charles Green he was not entitled to a transfer fee or compensation for the departure of players like Naismith and McGregor? If the same club had continued to be the same club their registration with the SFA would have remained showing they were contracted to RFC.

I have wondered if say McCulloch’s SFA registration changed to reflect the fact he was contracted to a different employer.

If I were supporter of TRFC I would be looking into this because the value of those fees would come in very useful right now.

suggests the legalities were investigated and a decision reached on the basis that

“The tribunal has agreed with the players. They agree newco shouldn’t be allowed to take on the arbitration of oldco and, as such, the players were entitled to leave as free agents.”

How many will actually walk away from football as a result of what went on under Murrays stewardship of Rangers? Smith, Peat then Ogilvie all did the dirty on every other club in Scotland. How many walked away?

Turnbull Hutton is held up as some kind of champion for the ordinary fan but what did he do to change things? What did he really achieve, I seriously would like to know, apart from a rousing address to assembled journalists on the steps at Hampden what did he achieve that fundamentally changed anything in the way Scottish football is governed today?

How many empty seats were there at the cup game last year? How many empty seats will there be at either Celtic Park or Ibroke when we inevitably face them next year in the league?

A few may walk away for a short time but those that really love the game will come back at some point. Let’s see you all scrambling for tickets to the SFA sponsored Scottish cup game then tell me you don’t support the SFA. As far as I know only 1 guy on this site actually doesn’t go to any cup games home or away because of the corruption our sport has witnessed over the last few years.

The LNS Decision post dates the shenanagins in June 2012 when 5 way was signed. From memory LNS ruled in Feb 2013.

So JJ got that bit wrong. ( He is careless on detail).

However what form did that advice take and in what context was it made? Remember the SFA wanted football debts paid and CG could have said “only if we are a continuation.”

Football wanted it both ways and has become more bent than a CurlyWurly as a result.

Maybe if Celtic supporters pledged the money they would otherwise spend on season books the Celtic Board might actually say something.

What disgusts me about this business isn’t the behaviour of the SFA or any of the other football authorities, or the SMSM. They’ve just done what you would have expected. It’s the craven silence from Celtic. Hoping it will all blow over, people will forget and it will be back to business as usual. It just makes me wonder whether I’ve been a mug all these years spending time and money supporting something that was a con all along.

Crowdfunding will just be throwing your hard earned away, I have said it for long enough, withhold your cash, it’s the only answer there is.

But I doubt it will happen.

Or boycott an away fixture, that won’t happen either.

So it will be the same old, same old, they will cheat with impunity, the powers will facilitate them, the msm will not report it, the blogs will bitch about it, the OF will be back.

My hope is that it is not a `craven silence` but one which , for reasons I cannot fathom, Celtic have adopted with an end game in mind. That `end game` will, of course, have to be revealed pretty soon ie before renewal time, or I will no longer cling to even that flimsy hope,

  24. The statement from the meeting John Clark had with as he said not a Celtic Rangers thing, and he is right if this is going to go anywhere, so it’s pointless ( but predictable) that CFC are get out of it, it’s a scottish fans thing, but some just can’t help dddrrraaaaagggginggggggg Celtic into it, use your nut ffs. Forget your agenda for this one, and don’t take your eye off the ball.

  25. Paul, think you’re being a bit harsh on Paul Hartley, you mention that Dundee concede lots of goals, but fail to mention they also score lots and are very entertaining.

This is an entertainment business and given the budget Dundee have they do very well.

They play in the right manner, this should be praised not criticised.

Our press tell us Aberdeen have the best strike force in the league, Dundee have scored 4 less.

I know that there are signs in the Dundee dressing room reinforcing the message of trying to keep clean sheets that are intended to enter the unconscious mind.

I guess that playing an expansive entertaining game can leave you vulnerable, as a fan I would much prefer that to the safety first approach that drives away fans.
