Cringe-worthy SFA, pundits and fans don’t lay eggs

402

You wouldn’t announce an event, encourage others to sell tickets, without booking the venue. You just wouldn’t do it. These things have an order: book the venue, then announce the event. It’s a matter of courtesy to all involved, not to mention being an operational necessity.

Why then, do we have the unedifying scenario of Hamilton Accies releasing a statement to say New Douglas Park is unavailable for the date the SFA advertised a Scottish Cup game between East Kilbride and Celtic would take place? It’s just remotely possible that Accies have reneged on an earlier commitment given to the SFA, but the tone of their statement suggests otherwise.

This is for a game which is scheduled to take place one week on Sunday. Fans have to acquire and distribute tickets, travel arrangements have to be made, police and stewarding have to be booked (by East Kilbride, who are the home team, remember).

This should be a great day for the young club but it’s shrouded in considerable commercial uncertainty: how much will policing, stewarding and stadium rental cost? Who at East Kilbride will guarantees these bills and how? The police and host club may take a lax view on credit, but the stewarding provider won’t. What revenue can be expected? None of these issues can be known until a venue is found.

I’m not going to support Pat Nevin’s views, which offended Dundee manager, Paul Hartley on Sportscene at the weekend. I didn’t hear his comments, so cannot conclude if he was talking “absolute garbage”, or if Nevin had verged into the kind of territory which saw him issue an apology under threat of legal action last month. But I’m not convinced the scope of Hartley’s comments are appropriate.

Dundee lose goals. Lots of them. Their only clean sheet since 12 September came against Hamilton Accies last month. The objective facts suggest their defensive strategy is an appropriate subject for criticism. This season they lost 6 in one game against Celtic and 8 over two matches against Ross County.

Analysis and criticism is the domain of pundits and fans, even those, who Paul Hartley notes, have “never coached or managed a team”. Attacking the pundit (or the programme) is easier than explaining a (subjectively) poor defensive record, or keeping clean sheets, apparently.

Paul said “It’s not what it used to be like, away back in the 1980s when you wanted to sit up and watch Sportscene on a Saturday night”. Back then Archie Macpherson fronted the show. Archie told me about a similar run-in he had with Alex Ferguson, who angrily disagreed with the commentator’s view of a defensive infraction.

Archie’s view on his opinion being irrelevant due to his lack of coaching experience was memorable, “I’ve never laid an egg, but I know when I taste a bad one”.

The Foundation Zip Slide in Paradise takes place on 26 March, bookings are now being taken.  This time the slide is higher and longer, leaving the very top corner of the North Stand seating at the Lisbon Lions Stand end, diagonally crossing the pitch to land at the bottom of the Jock Stein Stand, at the South Stand end.

You don’t have a lot of time to get booked and start your fundraising, so get onto it now.  Sign up here.

The SFA have announced that our ground will be the venue for the EK V Celtic Scottish Cup game. Perhaps they should have asked us first. We are having a Car Boot sale that day and have no intention of changing our plans. So , the Excelsior Stadium will not be available. Anyway, I am washing my hair that day.

Make that 2 guys, I haven’t been to a cup game since this con started and that won’t change until at least 2 things happen .

    1. They are confirmed and treated as a NEW club.

    2. There is a complete overhaul of the SFA.

  5. Would be a terrible shame for East Kilbride FC but this may be a good chance to boycott an

SFA branded game? Given TSFM’s meeting with Darryl “I am the SFA” Broadfoot the timing couldn’t be better. Televised game will no doubt draw national (UK) attention & especially so with no fans?

This has to be challenged, it just can’t be left flying about up there, according to Broadfoot, we the fans won’t? So no one else will, so it’s up to every fan in Scotland to let this little Adolf know where they stand.

    —————————————————————————————————————————————————————-

Tony why is it the fans responsibility? We, Celtic fans, and fans of other clubs pay for our season tickets or on a match by match basis in the understanding that we are witnessing a fair competition and that the organisation that is running the competition is using a set of rules that ALL clubs adhere to.

If there is any suspicion that the organisers are in any way favouring one club above everyone else who’s responsibility is it to challenge that?

I would say the moment we hand over our money we are entering into a contract with the club to ensure what we are witnessing is fair and above board and that no club is favoured above others by those running the competition we have paid to witness.

If their is any doubt then surely the onus is on the clubs to ensure the fans aren’t being shafted and not the other way around?

  7. It feels like the SFA motivation was to have this tie played at the smallest ground possible, therefore denying revenue to both clubs.

Meanwhile, Peterhead and TCFNAR, get to chose the venue giving maximum revenue possible.

We can’t have it both ways mate, the game is rigged, or it isn’t.

    Which is it for you?

I would guess given your answer above you honestly believe the game is clean otherwise you would have left it behind..

  10. eddieinkirkmichael on

ernie you can do better than that, this issue affects every club in Scotland and you know it. That you choose to not answer if fine as I already know the answer to my question as do you.

Thanks for solving my dilemma. As a Celtic fan I’m going to boycott the cup game. And go as an EK fan instead. Sorted ;-)

  12. Seeing the amount of rain cascading down near Hampden today, I will be amazed if the pitch will not be like a field for growing rice on Sunday. Of course, I forgot it is always like that when we have to play there!

  13. GuyFawkesaforeverhero on

I’m disappointed that another game for the development under20’s squad has been postponed today. We have a shabby record this season, of arranging playable surfaces and ready teams, home and away, for our squads below the first team. Not that I expect us to have any influence over disparate venues like Glebe Park.

Made me laugh to notice that Sevco delayed reporting today’s under20’s defeat to St Johnstone at Murray Park until two minutes after the SFA posted notice of our Scottish Cup venue.

How does the joke go? “What’s that Skippy? Always bury embarrassing news under a breaking story?”

  14. Traditionalist.

I admire the tolerance you display towards the governance of Scottish football.

Paying toward a game that was fundamentally rigged for over a decade obviously doesn’t bother you too much .

Rather than throwing “tantrums” the fans who are contemplating “chucking it” may just want an acknowledgement that the same manipulation can never happen again.

    To much to ask ?

TRFC being skint or shite is an irrelevance.

If the biggest sporting scandal in this country is washed over can you guarantee it won’t happen again ?

We were joined at the hip with that mob since we were founded. They died and we had a chance to start again, free of their encumbrance, and all the sectarian crap that made the rivalry so ‘special’. What have the Celtic board done to achieve that?

This affects Celtic far more than it affects any other club, and Celtic are the only club in Scotland big enough to take a stand on their own.

  16. Joe Filippis Haircut on

Seems to be we are seeing clearly that the SFA are not even handed and make no attempt to be so.Those who dont believe Celtic will lose many fans if we dont get a level playing field for next season ( very unlikely ) I cant speak for others but I for one will be finished with Scottish football. So Andy halliday got a yellow card for making a gesture towards the morton Fans … bbc story says the cameras didn’t catch anything yet when you watch the clip attached to the story you can clearly see him gesturing in the direction of the home stand before turning to the zombies

Media calling for better refs today but never called it when celtic players got booked for the same thing . Remember Caldwell getting booked for cupping his ear to the hibees after scoring as he had been getting dogs abuse from them .

Kris commons got a second yellow at Inverness when his momentum after scoring late in a game took him into the celtice fans . If I remember right he missed the last game of the season due to that. No outcry then

And lately Leigh booked for his 50 goal to shirt … hardly a peep about common sense then

The fact that we’re not in direct competition with the Big Lie in league terms has helped me put off a decision about whether to have anything to do with Scottish Football.

When we played Sevco in the league cup semi, I ignored the game, and said so on here.

If there is no clear statement from the governing bodies that Sevco is a new club before we are in direct competition with them, whenever that is, I’ll be taking no further interest in the game.

My position is inconsistent, I accept that, but it’s born of reluctance not to have my Celtic fix.

However, I know that when we come face to face with the Big Lie in league terms, the game will be a farce, and there will be confirmation that it is rigged.

I don’t have to make the decision to turn away at the moment, but if/when that scenario arises, I’m clear on what I’ll be doing.

I love Celtic, and the game, so couldn’t watch them partake in a rigged one, never mind pay for the privilege.

And I wouldn’t be able to take a sport seriously that tells me that a 4 year old club is going for its 55th League title.

    Would you?

  23. There we go again bringing CFC into it again, it’s all about scottish football fans, not one individual club, thats stupidity in my point of view ,that what the Huns the SFA and the SMSM want, it’s not a Celtic FC thing, it’s scottish football fans, that’s what Broadfoot said, the fans, not CFC, not any other particular club, just fans, get it?
