Cringe-worthy SFA, pundits and fans don’t lay eggs

402

You wouldn’t announce an event, encourage others to sell tickets, without booking the venue. You just wouldn’t do it. These things have an order: book the venue, then announce the event. It’s a matter of courtesy to all involved, not to mention being an operational necessity.

Why then, do we have the unedifying scenario of Hamilton Accies releasing a statement to say New Douglas Park is unavailable for the date the SFA advertised a Scottish Cup game between East Kilbride and Celtic would take place? It’s just remotely possible that Accies have reneged on an earlier commitment given to the SFA, but the tone of their statement suggests otherwise.

This is for a game which is scheduled to take place one week on Sunday. Fans have to acquire and distribute tickets, travel arrangements have to be made, police and stewarding have to be booked (by East Kilbride, who are the home team, remember).

This should be a great day for the young club but it’s shrouded in considerable commercial uncertainty: how much will policing, stewarding and stadium rental cost? Who at East Kilbride will guarantees these bills and how? The police and host club may take a lax view on credit, but the stewarding provider won’t. What revenue can be expected? None of these issues can be known until a venue is found.

I’m not going to support Pat Nevin’s views, which offended Dundee manager, Paul Hartley on Sportscene at the weekend. I didn’t hear his comments, so cannot conclude if he was talking “absolute garbage”, or if Nevin had verged into the kind of territory which saw him issue an apology under threat of legal action last month. But I’m not convinced the scope of Hartley’s comments are appropriate.

Dundee lose goals. Lots of them. Their only clean sheet since 12 September came against Hamilton Accies last month. The objective facts suggest their defensive strategy is an appropriate subject for criticism. This season they lost 6 in one game against Celtic and 8 over two matches against Ross County.

Analysis and criticism is the domain of pundits and fans, even those, who Paul Hartley notes, have “never coached or managed a team”. Attacking the pundit (or the programme) is easier than explaining a (subjectively) poor defensive record, or keeping clean sheets, apparently.

Paul said “It’s not what it used to be like, away back in the 1980s when you wanted to sit up and watch Sportscene on a Saturday night”. Back then Archie Macpherson fronted the show. Archie told me about a similar run-in he had with Alex Ferguson, who angrily disagreed with the commentator’s view of a defensive infraction.

Archie’s view on his opinion being irrelevant due to his lack of coaching experience was memorable, “I’ve never laid an egg, but I know when I taste a bad one”.

The Foundation Zip Slide in Paradise takes place on 26 March, bookings are now being taken.  This time the slide is higher and longer, leaving the very top corner of the North Stand seating at the Lisbon Lions Stand end, diagonally crossing the pitch to land at the bottom of the Jock Stein Stand, at the South Stand end.

You don’t have a lot of time to get booked and start your fundraising, so get onto it now.  Sign up here.

  1. Its time this zip slide nonsense was stopped and the whole idea put down immediately.. its a stupid idea, and will only attract the naive, weak willed, easily led people amongst us who have no idea of the fear and terror it will cause them. Instead of allowing these poor ignorant half witted, albeit well meaning sorts to embarrass themselves and their families, they should simply be allowed to put a couple of quid into a bucket somewhere, and retire with some dignity and their pride intact.

Write to the sponsors, Ladbrokes and William Hill, to inform them you refuse to use their services as they are supporting corrupt regimes who are perpetrating lies.

JohnJames nails it ~ well worth a read:

“There is a lie at the heart of Scottish football governance. The CEO of the SPFL, Neil Doncaster, is an advocate of this lie. Alan McRae, President of the SFA, is complicit in this lie. Darryl Broadfoot, the Communications Officer of the SFA, is a party to this lie. I invite the latter to sue me and in doing so I will expose his claim that he received legal advice that Rangers were the same club, as a lie.

Allow me to explain this as clearly as possible. A company, RFC 1L, was incorporated in 1899. This company was renamed RFC PLC. On 14 February RFC PLC was put into administration by it’s majority shareholder Craig Whyte, who had acquired 85% equity of RFC PLC from David Murray. In July 2012, Sevco Scotland, a company with £2 of share capital owned by Charles Green, made an offer, known as a CVA, to settle with the creditors to buy the company RFC PLC as a going concern. To effect this he required 75% approval. HMRC and Dave King, rejected the CVA.

At this point the company could not be procured. It was renamed Rangers 2012 Ltd within hours of the CVA being rejected, and is now being liquidated by order of Lord Hodge at The Court of Session on October 1st 2012. The company that derived its revenue from operating a professional football club, is being liquidated. It is not a holding company.

Charles Green acquired the trading assets of the distressed company. He renamed his company The Rangers Football Club Ltd. It is a unique company, with a unique company number and registration. It is a new company established in July 2012. This is not my opinion. It is a fact.

If I as a Rangers supporter was prepared to believe the lie perpetrated by Doncaster, McRae and Broadfoot, life would be inordinately difficult. As the same company the £96.6m in debts, which might rise to £168.6m, would bear heavy on my mind. I might find that Rangers would never be free of these debts and would never be a force in Scottish football.

If I had come down in the last shower, I might not have read the LNS report and the statement that a club does not have a distinct legal personality. The club and the company were one and the same.

So what we have in Scottish football governance are two bodies prepared to lie and pervert the truth to promote a commercial imperative. It’s a cynical calculation. Tell Rangers supporters the truth and lose thousands of them from the game, or perpetuate a lie and lose less disaffected by the game.

The corruption in our game is manifest in so many ways. An individual, Campbell Ogilvie, who executed numerous illegal DOS/EBT tax avoidance contracts, and received £95,000 by way of an EBT as part of his severance deal, would have been expected to recuse himself from an independent investigation. He chose not to do so and presented evidence on behalf of Rangers. This is ethically wrong. The temptation to withhold and redact information, so as to exonerate himself and Rangers, should not have been within his purview. Mr Bryson’s position that players were ‘imperfectly’ registered is another example of systemic corruption. For the avoidance of doubt it’s a binary decision, not a fudged compromise.

Every right thinking fan should turn their back on this systemic corruption. Write to the sponsors, Ladbrokes and William Hill, to inform them that they refuse to use their services as they are supporting corrupt regimes who are perpetrating lies.”

    Shaky,shaky ground on that one,JohnJames.

You`re going to claim he didn`t receive legal advice to that effect ?

  18. The aforementioned Aussie born English tennis player advances to the semi final.

    6-4 6-1

In doing so she has earned more winnings in January than in the whole of 2015.

    Andy is up next.

  19. We can chomp our gums and pound our fingers as much as we like about the governance or lack of it in our game, but there is no way it can change in the short or medium term.

Unless the clubs revolt en masse.

The SFA is one of the last bastions of blazer clad bigotry.

It has been since time immemorial.

What other football organization could have virtually ignored the Lisbon Lions when handing out caps?

What other organization could have employed Gordon Smith whose only qualification was his attachment to a now dead club?

What other organization could have its national manager walk out of a long term contract and not pursue the compensation due?

What other organization could ignore its own rules and grant a club a license to play European football to help ensure its survival?

What other organization employs so many people whose main focus is the revival and survival of the same club myth?

I could go on, and on, and on, but it would need more time than I can dedicate, and anyway I would be going over old familiar, to Internet bampots, grounds.
