Dedryck strolls past England

1089

Hot on the heels of a former Celtic player becoming the most expensive defender in transfer history, we watched Dedryck Boyata stroll through Belgium’s win against England last night.  I would be more animated on this subject if he was secured on a five year contract, but as he his current deal only has one year to go, such a high profile performance could reduce our options for the player.

How many of you thought we would be in this situation after the Ibrox game in March?  That day Brendan Rodgers said there was better to come from Dedryck.  He is still not the finished article, but he’s a key cog in a team who fancy their chances in Russia.

Stiliyan Petrov match worn Champions League shirt raffle

We have a very special raffle, which ends this afternoon! The shirt Stiliyan Petrov wore in Celtic’s 0-0 draw with Bayern Munich during our 2003 Champions League campaign is available. You can buy a ticket for £1 here on ebay.  Stan signed the shirt.

All proceeds go to the Stiliyan Petrov Foundation to aid research into leukaemia and cancer treatments.  Stiliyan’s recover from leukaemia shows us just how far treatments have come, but as our own CQN community knows too well, more progress is needed.  The draw will be made at Woodside Hotel, Aberdour, where the 14th annual CQN Open Golf Day is now underway.

Hope to see you later.

  1. Academic what the final fee is for KT- it’s a nailed on certainly the funds wouldn’t be invested in the playing staff. The business model bringing them in and developing and selling on is all very noble and sensible etc. But its a pain in the tits for me as a supporter with a view to winning the champions league. Or am i not allowed to aim so high for my club?

Wan load a shite. Another embarrassing transfer window AGAIN.

The more Celtic make the less they spend it’s beyond belief seriously.

  3. Big Jimmy. I will be in McCuills in an hour, prior to TRSMT . Be good to catch up , and hopefully some eye candy will be in . If not , good to see you posting again & pulling a young yin . Once you’ve got it you never lose it ;-))

CRC . I’m sure you & the CQN collective will have a good one today. ….. I will transfer that dough I still owe for the goal challenge on Monday. HH

  4. Could Celtic be heading for a pre CL qualification defensive nightmare? Worst case scenario someone offers money for Dedryck (likely) and this being Celtic we accept the offer to ensure we make a bit of money on him rather than let him leave for nothing. Now if rumours are to be believed a couple of clubs have shown interest in signing big Jozo during this window. Again given that he seems to have fallen from favour with Brendan will Celtic offload him if a decent fee is offered thus leaving us with 2 relatively inexperienced central defenders in Hendry & Ajer, and of course the enigma that is Martin Compper to navigate through our difficult path to the riches of the CL proper.

We’ve had defensive nightmares for the last two season of CL qualifiers. 9 different players, 9 different CH partnerships, only Jozo/Erik played together more than once.Boyata has never played a qualifier in that time.. We’ve had Ambrose and O’Connell as a pairing. Any partnership for the majority of games is an improvement on last 2 years.

ODSONNE Edouard will play his first game for Celtic since signing a permanent deal with the club in today’s pre-season friendly with Bohemians Prague.

The highly-rated 20-year-old, who impressed during a season-long loan with the Hoops from Paris-Saint Germain, penned a four-year contract with the Celtic earlier this month.

And having sat out the Scottish champions’ 1-0 win over Vorwarts Steyr on Wednesday, the striker will lead the line for the Bhoys against the Czech side.

Ryan Christie and Scott Sinclair will provide close support to the Frenchman, while Craig Gordon features for the first time in pre-season between the sticks.

Kick-off is 2pm (Celtic Park time) in Wels, Upper Austria, and the club’s official Twitter account – @celticfc – will have all the pre-game build-up and live match updates.

  14. I posted my concerns yesterday around what is going on at Celtic. Paul’s leaders are increasingly shrill and attempt to reinvent history to soften you all up for the lack of a,notion at Celtic. Rodgers claimed yeasterday we can’t improve as we don’t have the funds. Really?

Oh dear. Selling KT and actually Rodgers is hawking KT with those comments would be an absolute calamity. we know KT doesn’t want to go and certainly not to Everton. But here we have the Celtic manager naming his price. That is bad on every level you care to think about.

I am frequently disgusted by Celtic and increasingly so with CQN. The sense of complete arrogance and entitlement stinks. As does the stunning lack of ambition. Celtic are clearly looking to cans in.

With over £50m in the bank you have to ask why?

  15. Would far rather hear BR saying KT is going nowhere than airing his views to the media in the way he did yesterday. It sounded like he was accepting a deal was more likely than not. Admitting he will get all the development he needs in the EPL. He basically said you only needs to look at the career of John Kennedy to understand that you have to take the money while you can.

  16. How to Annoy the Celtic Support in 4 Easy Steps

    By

    A Tabloid Hack

    1) Introduce a headline stating Everton are going to bid £25m for KT

    2) Get a quote from Brendan as to whether he will sell KT- Brendan wil sensibly reply that if an astronomical fee is bid we won’t stand in the way of a player who accepts.

    3) Allow the conflation of 1 and 2 to boil over in Celtic fans’ minds till they reach the absurd conclusion that Brendan is going to sell KT to Everton for £25m (which has not even been bid yet)

    4) Cue outrage about biscuit tins and selling players below their value.

It is a predictable and well-worn technique

And, unfortunately, it still works for them.

Of course, KT might go to an English club, maybe even to Everton (they are, at least, as good as Southampton as a destination for higher wages), but he will go because KT is willing to go and the club are willing to accept the price and add-ons.

Even a Celtic die-hard has his price. If you have a chance of joining a club who could actually win trophies in Europe, as opposed to Celtic who currently cannot, then you will be sorely tempted (no different than the calculations made by Dalglish and Larsson and, to a lesser extent, Van Dijk). Some of our own, who have the ambition and talent, may even calculate that they will have to use a Southampton/Everton stepping stone club in order to convince the bigger clubs that you are good enough, despite having come from the SPFL.

If or when KT goes, he should go with our blessing for having done his best for us while here.

If he stays, we should stop fretting about when he will leave, because top class players will be scavenged from us. That is our position in the food chain and no amount of “blaming it on the board” or “players’ greed” will change those core facts of life in modern post-Bosman, TV money football.

  17. All this talk of KT possibly moving on, and some folks on here saying that if Celtic sell him, they will not be back. Great sentiment. I said the same thing when we sold Paddy Crerand , I was seriously hacked off, but of course I went back. When all said and done, it is not the love of the players, manager or the board, they are merely ships in the night. It is CELTIC we love, that’s all folks.

In fact lawwells prob drooling abt next season selling ntcham.

Season books, new strips every year, sponsorship, ch lge money, Europa lge money, World Cup money, vvd sell on cash, but hey we’re a selling club. Feckn joke is what it is.

  21. !!Bada Bing!! on

Every player is for sale, if the offer suits a club, not the player.Sure KT would have to be dragged out of CP, but if the price is right for the club, the player doesn’t have a say in the matter.FWIW, I don’t think he will be sold this season.

  22. succulentlambstinks on

    Succulent lamb

So. does Lawwell NOT have the choice then?

Yes he does but wait till we bring out a 3rd strip and punt that tae.

  23. KT wants to go nowhere and has to go nowhere but if I was him I’d be thinking BR is telling me to take the money and run. Very disappointed in the references to JK made by BR. FFS, KT is extremely well rewarded and is at the club he loves, why state “the club will have a decision to make” if a 25 million offer is made? BS.

I reckon you underestimate posters on here and Paul.

We’ve been through the cheating years and my god if we had only known back then the corruption that was going on as we paid for season books for ourselves and family and the smugness of it all.

It does get to me especially the denial of it all

from huns, they didn’t cheat for years!

My feck, i can see where your anger comes from as a lot of supporters from other clubs that i speak to feel the same.

The thing is they rise above it and support their team. HAIL HAIL.

  26. Paul67 etal.

It happens every season,The moaners and groaners have a field day knocking hell out of Celtic, the board, the Management team, the players and us the supporters. There’s still a t least a month to go before the transfer dedline comes into being and they start their moaning and Groaning, for god sake give it a rest.If KT is true to his word that he loves Celtic he won’t be going anywhere, If nothing happens before the transfer window closes, then do your moaning then, and not now.

Was at the Aberdour golf day yesterday and as usual I had a great day, meeting up with friends old and new,I wish the blog was as friendly a lace to come on.

I’ve written over the years that CQN was created,It’s been a life line for me and others like me,but over the last couple of years it is gradually becoming a drag coming on here.

  27. Since Neganon is not around just now to provide an answer to my question on what he quoted, which was:-

“Rodgers claimed yeasterday we can’t improve as we don’t have the funds. ”

Let me explain further why I am so puzzled by this.

In the reports thet I have read and, where Brendan’s words are put in quotation marks, I read the following-

“That’s the difficult thing for us. Because for someone to come in over Callum, for example, that would cost a lot of money. To come in over Tom, Moussa, Odsonne or Leigh Griffiths, that costs money.”

So, I can see where the beginnings of Neganon’s thoughts came from.

However, the very next statement Brendan made was :-

That doesn’t mean we can’t improve. The club, that’s not how they have operated. It’s not how they work.”

That is a statement that means precisely the opposite of what Neganon claims. He is stating clearly (well, with a double negative, but still easily understood) that we CAN improve.

So, why would Neganon believe that Brendan had said the opposite?

  28. Last season we signed Ntcham on the 12th of July. Edouard signed on deadline day.

Any player worth his salt is on holiday or at the World Cup. Said players will return to their Clubs soon to assess their options.

    Let’s all keep calm.

  29. Succulentlamb

“Yes he does but wait till we bring out a 3rd strip and punt that tae”

So Mr. lawwell DOES have the choice.

And, according to your logic, he will exercise that choice to punt Kieran and any sellable assett (even a 3rd strip- which no-one is forced to buy BTW).

So- did Mr. Lawwell NOT have the choice last year?

As far as I could see, Kieran had a great year last year. Kieran had many suitors- possibly even a few tentative test-the-water enquiries, if not full bids? So, why was KT not sold last year if it is all down to “Lawwell” and Brendan is just his silent sock puppet as you state?

This “Lawwell” character seems to be rubbish at he old Despotic biscuit-tin mentality role that you have ascribed to him. He is way behind schedule in selling KT, Moussa, Griff, Jamesie, Rogic, Craig Gordon, Callum and Sinky.

Sack Lawwell! Let’s get somebody who IS actually good at selling players cheaply for less then their worth.
