Defensive experiments will pay dividends

822

Playing Adam Matthews and Emilio Izaguirre as wing-backs with Kelvin Wilson, Charlie Mulgrew and Mikael Lustig as a back three looked a bit clumsy and didn’t last the 90 minutes but that was to be expected.  New defensive formations are not supposed to operate as smoothly as familiar systems.

I’m far from certain three at the back is a good idea, or if we have the correct personnel for this formation, but Neil Lennon should persist with the experiment.  We will not learn and grow if we don’t take chances, which was one of our abiding frustrations under both Martin O’Neill and Gordon Strachan.

No experiments on Tuesday, of course!

What does the ulster independence flag look like? Is that the flag they fly for McIlroy and McDowell at the golf?

Do they stand for the nine counties becoming independent of the British mainland and the rest of Ireland?

    Just curious

I’d be very disappointed if Dave was sold for £5M but todays market is a lot flatter than last years and that was exceptionally flat apart from the Freak Clubs.

Dave should be the first name on the teamsheet if the referees protected the players in this country, they don’t and that is why he is not a first pick every week. His range of passing is supreme and I hope he moves to Spain rather than England because he will really flourish there.

The simple fact he is Korean means his price will be double the £5M quoted IMO as the marketing possibilities are massive.

  3. Its crazy that people actually think we don’t try to get as much money as possible when selling, do you really think Pete goes nah it’s ok mate you just offer what you want we’ll accept it.

We set a price someone comes in with half it and we meet in the middle, Ki only has a year left on the contract we’d be mad to turn down any bid unless we can get him to sign an extension.

  4. Sixteen roads to Golgotha on

petec – He is a smashing footballer mate.

“Celtic are unlikely to accept less than £8m for a player with 15 months remaining on his current contract.”

That sounds a wee bit more reasonable, although his price will immediately double the moment he steps onto a pitch in the EPL.

I would have thought it was the red hand of Ulster flag?

The flag i’m peed off about is the orange standard. I cannot believe that any right minded person would fly it. I despair of this country at times.

  6. the_huddle

I think Pete would have set the price high at 11 or 12 and will take 9 or 10 depending on the club and the potential sell on clause.

  7. petec,

Thanks, missed it twice today who was bidding, only showed his goal at Easter Road.

Now, if we’re selling the bhoy?

The bidding starts at £10m plus 50% add on, or, do one!

  8. Sixteen roads to Golgotha on

I find it strange that the club is prepared to sell him just 2 days before the CL game in Sweden.

They could be concerned about him picking up an injury.

Let him play, and sell him after these games – he won’t be cup-tied anyway for any future club as the qualifiers and play-offs don’t count.

  9. Sixteen roads to Golgotha

Only if he starts to dominate most matches, assuming it is Arsenal that sign him.

The SSM is not daft and he drives a hard bargain.

It’s a very fast League down there and Ki may not settle into it well, I really hope he does, if he goes.

  10. We’ll sell Ki at the market value for Celtic, we don’t play in the EPL so can’t expect silly money.

Even Arsenal sold Song for a song (boom boom) and he’s an excellent player.

  11. Sixteen Roads to Golgotha,

Your summary of 23 year old Ki’s achievements to date reminded me of this stunning list.

    3 La Liga Title Wins

    2 Copa Del Ray Wins

    3 Spanish Super Cup Wins

    2 UEFA Champions League Wins

    2 UEFA Super Cup Wins

2 FIFA World Club Championship Wins

1 FIFA World Cup Win (Spain)

    1 UEFA Championship Win (Spain)

All of these won by the age of 23 (he has just turned 24 in July).

    Step forward Sergio Busquets.

Could we get him for £5million from Barca?!

  12. Ki:

Contracts are normally ‘window-to-window’ – think its closer to 18 months remaining.

Why would he opt for Swansea? They came up from the Championship last season – unlikely few of their players would be on more than £25K per week.

Can’t see him making that type of move for £2-3K per week net and little or no ‘image’ rights or any likelihood of future European football.

  13. Terry Butcher is a disgrace and when will he get pulled up.

Craig Levein says that’s just Terry let him get on with it but when it’s Neil it’s a different story, scumbags the lot of them.

  14. Sixteen roads to Golgotha

Theres nothing strange about selling a player who has not even trained with the squad for months, it could even be called perfect timing.

Only if we get by the Borg. ;)

  15. Sixteen roads to Golgotha on

petec – Indeed. But if the opposition give him any kind of space at all,he will destroy them.

As you have already stated – his range of passes are exquisite, with both feet.Very comfortable in possession.

Some posters on here seem to forget that he was just a kid when he signed for us,Scotland must have been a culture shock for him at first.

Ideally suited to European football,as you have stated – he put in some great displays for us in last season’s Europa League.

  16. Arsenal have been amongst the clubs linked with our potentially departing Ki Seung Yung, and not so long ago they paid a reported £10,000,000 for Mikael Arteta.

I think Ki, although similar in style is an infinately better player, making his £5,000,000 MSM produced tag seem grossly undervalued.

    Watch this Space CSC

  17. Zigic is on apparently £50k a week in the 2nd division, I’m sure Swansea are paying alot more than £25k a week to their players.

Southampton, just promoted, have spent millions on players, they’ll all be on fortunes a week.

WGS said it years ago, we can’t compete with the wages offered at the bottom of the EPL.

  18. the_huddle

I agree, Alex Song has been sensational for the last couple of seasons at Arsenal but his marketing value is limited compared to Ki. Ki is a money maker for Arsenal, and serious money compared to Song.

It could have been a lot better for Celtic if we done a swap deal without any cash. ;) Just a shame that no bad wee team from Catalunya nicked in and grabbed him.

What are the odds on the 2011/12 accounts being published this week?

Tomorrow to be exact, on the basis that from memory the (half year) accounts always seem to come out on a Monday.

Interesting to see what one of the three views you and the club will be highlighting?

As always Cashflow is king but if you want to paint a picture of lack of resources, the need to tighten our belts and the need to sell players sorry sweat the assets then the P&L will take top billing.

On the subject of Ki I fear he has been in the shop window since last Nov / Dec.

The exact timing will be easy to spot, it was just after his pep talk from PL and he started to give the impression that his mind was not fully on the job at hand.

When PL moves on will you do a list of all the players he has managed to de-motivate with all his “push them out the door against their will so that his bonus is safe” machinations?

BC with DC and NF in the 70’s and 80’s was well known for his ability to motivate a herd of sheep.

PL is rapidly getting the Reputation of being able to start a fight in an empty dressing room.

  20. Celtic play in the SPL it’s that simple, you can’t compare a player like Arteta with Ki cost wise.

Why do you think an average player like Fletcher is going for £12mill, if he was playing with us we’d be lucky to get half that.

Whether Ki stays with us or is sold on this summer, he still has a lot to learn. His passing can be excellent, but he’s made some right howlers and sold the jerseys including one of the away Euro ties last season.

He clearly needs space and time on the ball, which you mostly don’t get in this country. Most of the games where people have raved about his performance have been when the opposition have been sitting deep, inviting us on to them. The 2-2 cup game at Mordor is a good example.

I think he’ll excel in a better quality league and I wish him well. I just hope that he goes for a really big fee and we can use the money to strengthen other areas of the team, i.e. CB and striker.

    What’s Butcher done now?

Going nuts on touch line and kicking something in the tunnel but hey ho it’s allowed it’s only Terry but if your name is Neil Lennon then your a disgrace.

I thought the same as you on both flags.

Seems a tad ironic that the unionists are for independence. I wish they would make up their minds.

An “orange standard” would seem to be an oxymoron if ever there was one.
