Defensive experiments will pay dividends

822

Playing Adam Matthews and Emilio Izaguirre as wing-backs with Kelvin Wilson, Charlie Mulgrew and Mikael Lustig as a back three looked a bit clumsy and didn’t last the 90 minutes but that was to be expected.  New defensive formations are not supposed to operate as smoothly as familiar systems.

I’m far from certain three at the back is a good idea, or if we have the correct personnel for this formation, but Neil Lennon should persist with the experiment.  We will not learn and grow if we don’t take chances, which was one of our abiding frustrations under both Martin O’Neill and Gordon Strachan.

No experiments on Tuesday, of course!

some signings work out and others dont, its just the way it is,

we are buying in a market with no guarantee of success,

you only have to have a look at the Premiership to see how

spectacularly wrong some signings can be

I wonder what the biggest crowd for a junior/amatuer Scottish Cup Final, played at Hampden, was???

  3. Sydney Tim, we DO have centre halves. Whether you like them or not they did concede very few goals last season and broke a 90 odd year record for goals conceded at home.

You say we have one goalscorer, Stokes and hooper both scored over 20 last season.

Any names of who YOU would like to see signed? I know that’s not your job but any CBs or Strikers you like?

Positive spin is part and parcel of modern football management – you haven’t been paying attention.

I agree …. canny wait to see Blackmann and Ibrahimi in the hoops in Europe. I have been talking to my son salivating at that prospect for months now. He begged my to buy my old uncle a ST so that he would not miss out. We have done well in concealing how good they are from the rest of the world but once unleashed on the CL I cannot wait to see what transfer fees they can command.

I go out on a limb here and say that we will make a profit from them both …. and that my son earns more a week than they do.

    Thats exactly what we need.

Nobody absolutely nobody can say that Peter Lawwwell, Paul Brennan are trying to pull the wool over anyones eyes.

    Certainly not me.

  7. The record attendance for the Scottish Junior Cup final is 77,650 for Petershill v Irvine Meadow in 1951!

What tier of football was that one then!

  8. I’m with Kitalba,,,Ki is a decent player at best, not the player to unlock packed defences on a regular basis.I always feel he slows the game down too much.Anything north of 5million is great business.

He might prove me wrong in the Premiership. i doubt it though!

Can you confirm that a certain poster has got terribly annoyed that Celtic will sell a midfielder for more than his favourite team’s SB money, and is just posting drivel to try and distract and deflect? :)

Nothing to be made out of Ki.

Seemingly Ipswich bid 250k for big Kelvin but we wont do a deal unless they agree to take King Daryl also … so it is no deal.

  13. greenjedi 11:41 on 20 August, 2012 – even if that were true – what’s the best way of increasing our revenue? It’s getting into the CL. What’s the best way of getting into the CL? Winning the league.

If it was as straighforward as many think ie if we spend/had spent £xM we’d be guaranteed CL and therefore at least £10M, then PL would have sanctioned it.

As far as I can see PL has been asked to, and tries to, run the club such that it breaks even without European football, while at the same time ensuring the football budget is high enough to maintain a squad that at least approaches (if not actually getting too close) the level that a club our size dictates. I’m not envious of his position.

My claims for Blackman and Ibrahim were precisely stated.

They were punts on “bad boys” i.e. talented footballers who were available cheap because, despite their talent, they had bad reputations.

Neil thought he could reform them and allow them to blossom here. So far it has not happened but they’re still with us so hope has not evaporated. I have not heard anyone doubt Ibrahim’s ability and Blackman looks a reasonable LM but his defensive credentials are less obvious.

If they do not make it, it was a cheap punt and we move on.

But, I’d make the general point here that we can only play 11 to 14 players in any single game. Over the course of a season, we will use 20 to 30 players in our matches, though 4 or 5 of these will only play the odd match. Therefore, I think we need 25 players or so to win a league.

The 14 players, from this 25, that do not start are not failures, they are valuable squad members.

    I’m off out now

Just how much money is Rabiu Ibrahim being given for 3 and a half years to slot in BEHIND Paddy McCourt in the pecking order for an area of the squad we were already top heavy in?

Mind you, going by his celebrations when we got the trophy after the Hearts game in May he almost had me convinced he’d won it single handedly.

Anyway- if its Europa League – Rhodes and a CB to sign.

Champions league – Rhodes, a CB, Henriksen and Russell.

If not, serious questions to be asked, starting with the Ibrahim one.

On tomorrow night, if Stokes and Hooper are out then Tony Watt has to start. Has that knack of making the keeper work and finding space in dangerous areas.
