Defensive experiments will pay dividends

822

Playing Adam Matthews and Emilio Izaguirre as wing-backs with Kelvin Wilson, Charlie Mulgrew and Mikael Lustig as a back three looked a bit clumsy and didn’t last the 90 minutes but that was to be expected.  New defensive formations are not supposed to operate as smoothly as familiar systems.

I’m far from certain three at the back is a good idea, or if we have the correct personnel for this formation, but Neil Lennon should persist with the experiment.  We will not learn and grow if we don’t take chances, which was one of our abiding frustrations under both Martin O’Neill and Gordon Strachan.

No experiments on Tuesday, of course!

Remember all those years when a former football club spent fortunes on players to make an assault on Europe only to get knocked out in qualifiers in 1993,1994,1997.

They really got their money’s worth out of all that. In fact how are they doing these days?

A “world Record 4th tier attendance”?

A club liquidated because they speculated to accumulate?

    Oh yeah.

    Hmmmmm

Celtic never organised a friendly with a championship club this summer therefore Celtic will sign nobody this transfer window. This is how it is.

  9. Over on the Beeb there was an article on Suarez, Liverpool and Brendan Rodgers.

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/19312316

A major contribution comes from a particularly highly rated CQN hero and legend – Gary McCallister, so I read the article and the comments .

I thought they might have been missing a point so I threw in a wee bit of advice and guidance AND didn’t charge them for it…..I expect floods of gratitude and thanks from our wee friends down in the second city of Lancashire! :-).

It is well known that Brendan (good man that he is) was asked when at Swansea, if he would fancy the Celtic Job. He said he was too inexperienced and raw for such a huge club. He has wisely decided to rub off the jaggy edges at the rougher end of the football spectrum in preparation for his eventual ascent to Paradise, Celtic Park and eternal glory. Just a thought! Hail hail Estadio

I am sure they’ll all see the wisdom of my words.

Can you show me in the accounts each year that PL has received a £1M bonus? My recollection is extremely hazy but is the total of all bonuses he has received, and I’m not arguing that it was correct that he received them, not in that region.

If that’s what you were suggesting fine, but you infer that he receives that every year that we at least break even. That’s not factually accurate.

  13. Couple of cracking goals from J Russell yesterday, if we do sell Ki, surely a bid is a must for this boy. Our front men seem to be needing a little more incentive to keep their places an have gone casual, competition for places is ALWAYS needed if you want to keep at the top.

I think we should sell Izziguirre this window also

    He has been playing crap.

    Probably a crock now.

Cheeky impudent wee bam has been asking for a pay rise.

We have more than enough defensive cover

And selling him would be akin to getting past a Braga or an Utrecht or a Sion FC.

We should sell him and rewrite our history so it looks like we done well in OUR Europe qualifier errrmmmmm ….. 2 seasons ago

We could have 23 million in the bank folks.

    Think of that.

Truth is it would be far better, safer and more exciting than the abject excuse of a football team that Neil Lennon has been trying to fob of on us so far this season.

I think we should look at investment vehicles for the money we are generating

Maybe an Octopus Ticketus scheme ????

  21. The Battered Bunnet on

Buy talent, not experience. It’s not a bad principle.

    Frinstance: Kayal rather than Bullard.

Or Russell rather than Dobbie (that one’s got to be a wind up!)

I had some sympathy with the view expressed last night (maybe by JJ?) that buying Russell serves only to weaken Dundee Utd and hence diminish the competitive nature of the league, but on balance, Utd are rather likely to sell him kinda soon, and should Celtic pay Utd £2M for the player it would be good for all three parties concerned.

    Kit

Yup he is not interested and Neil Lennon cant seem to turn him around or bring the best out on him.

I also reckon now would be the best time to sell Charlie Mulgrew.

Sell while the Iron is hot

Statistically speaking Charlie will be bummed out to a 2nd division out fit by Peter Lawwell in two years from now .. if we can get 5m for Charlie and 3 million for Izzy then I would do the deal.

    HAil Hail

  23. Celtic paying decent fees for decent Scottish players, from decent Scottish teams, keeps decent Scottish teams afloat. Sometimes.

  24. 67Heaven … I am Neil Lennon..!!.. Ibrox belongs to the creditors ……………….

I’m sure a ‘good greet’ never did anybody any harm.

It is only when the same people repetitiously make the same utterly predictable & banal criticism, about the same targets, that it becomes TEDIOUS.

If they were to OCCASIONALLY say something positive, then their moaning would be more understandable.
