Doncaster has failed Scottish football fans

503

Alasdair Lamont’s article for BBC this evening after meeting SPL chief executive, Neil Doncaster, is bound to provoke debate.  The article is titled, “Newco Rangers could avoid sanctions from SPL”, although that claim is not supported by any direct quote from Doncaster.  It could be that Doncaster made a supporting comment which wasn’t covered in the article, or that Alasdair is extrapolating from Doncaster’s comment that he is “not entirely sure why a distinction is made between the two routes [CVA or a Newco] out of administration”.

Before we open on what Doncaster actually said, it’s worth pointing out that he has never previously indicated that a Newco was likely to gain access to the SPL without penalty, despite being asked this question directly on a number of occasions.  Indeed, he has proposed a number of penalties for such an eventuality, although any decision will now rest with a general meeting of the clubs, which he will not have a vote at.

To what Doncaster said:

“Newco is typically the way businesses in general escape from administration.”

Oh no it’s not.  Businesses, in general, conclude their period of administration either by emerging with a CVA or by going out of business.  The swathes of business failures across the UK in recent years has seen only a tiny percentage phoenix as a Newco.  This statement is erroneous and misleading.

Doncaster added:

“I am not entirely sure why a distinction is made between the two routes out of administration.”

Let me explain, Mr Doncaster.  In Scottish football history, no club has ever come out of administration as a Newco.  Ever.  Third Lanark, Airdrieonians and Gretna all failed to achieve a CVA and went out of business.  Morton, Clydebank (now Airdrie United), Motherwell, Dundee (twice) and Livingston (twice), all achieved a CVA and remained in football.

Mr Doncaster must think that we are all daft, have no access to Scottish football records and have a complete ignorance of how “businesses in general” operate.  He wishes to provide a Newco-Rangers with direct access to the top league in Scottish football, the first time anything like this has ever happened.  Perhaps being frank with us on this matter would be advisable.

Even if I was of a mind to agree with Doncaster that rules should be changed to allow Newco direct access to the SPL, his feeble attempts to convince fans of the merits of this idea would leave me ruing the inadequacy of his plan’s execution.

All of this will be a welcome distraction from the main issue for Doncaster.  The SPL allowed last season to conclude without letting clubs or fans know if Rangers competed with ineligible players.  They have been in possession of the information required for over six weeks now but have no intention of letting fans know the outcome until after Newco is voted into the league.

It’s too late now.  Doncaster has had his chance to report and his inquiry has failed to do so.  It has now been taken out of his hands. He has failed you and all Scottish football fans.

It’s time for football executives to relinquish power and for the old media, the fans, the new media and the authorities to take control.

Each and every one who is a season ticket holder will make their own decision on whether to renew or not, as is their right. We all have our own reasons whether to renew, delay or cancel. It is not the right of anyone to question the decion of another individual. I am in the middle band waiting to see what happens to the huns and whether or not the SPL is a sport I want to pay a hefty cost following.

I suspect many of us on here (and elsewhere) have had wildly swinging emotions and opinions in the last year or so – hope, expectation, gloom, confusion, anger and joy all making an appearance at some stage. I’m not sure I am any further forward with my understanding of the situation then I was several months ago.

Paul’s latest blog has a touch of anger about it coupled with hint of a threat towards the SPL, at least that’s the way I read it. This strikes me as a bit different to some of his more confident posts recently.

I wouldn’t want to speak for anyone other than myself but all of the posturing, pronouncements and nudges and winks coming from Celtic, the SFA, the SPL and other clubs mean nothing. I will only renew when I find out what the position will be for the newhuns and the reaction of Celtic to any decision perceived to be unfair.

Rangers fans may well be extremely fearful and nervous as to the outcome of this shameful episode but they are not the only ones.

I only hope that justice is done at the end – nothing more or less. It’s just a shame that if that is to be the outcome it will have been forced on the decision making parties rather than as an act of integrity.

    We live in hope.

  6. It appears from the website on which the FTT tribunal decisions are published that there is a delay of about three weeks between decisions being issued and them appearing on the website.

It will be interesting in retrospect to see what level of spin is attempted during that three week shadow when the parties know the details and the public don’t..

I can think of at least two,but would their legal representatives be liable too?

After all,the players presented proof-of-income to a court which would have been of a level which would have enabled them to claim Legal Aid,yet they didn’t.

Thanks for the Brian Quinn article. How prescient a quote:

“I believe that proper corporate governance is at the very core of our success here,” he said. “A part of that is not getting too cosy with one another. It is having a board which can be relied upon to be objective and rational in how they do things. There is an ever-present danger in any plc that if people are in place for too long it gets cosy and you don’t take the difficult decisions. It is time for someone else to take over. I’ve done my piece.”

The players would argue that the payments were loans. That’s the thing when you start down that path, you’ve got to keep going.

  12. Celtic shine amid off-field drama

In Scotland, season 2011/12 can already be ranked among of the most dramatic and unpredictable in the nation’s history. And that’s before we even consider the football.

That is due to the fact that, despite notable successes enjoyed by Celtic, Hearts, Kilmarnock and Motherwell, it is for the financial meltdown at Rangers that this campaign seems sure to be remembered. And no-one should be surprised. Rangers, after all, are not just any club, but Scotland’s record champions, with a tally of 54 national titles that is unmatched anywhere in world football. The sight of this giant brought to its knees, threatened by liquidation, has left the country’s national game facing up to some momentous questions.

A story from which we now expect the unexpected seems sure to have a few more twists and turns yet, and it is to be regretted that the chaos at Ibrox has overshadowed laudable on-field achievements elsewhere. Celtic certainly emerged as worthy and impressive champions, with the 20-point margin by which they took the title lessening the significance of the ten-point penalty dished out to their rivals for calling in the administrators.

Having succeeded in striking a successful balance between defensive solidity and attacking adventure, Neil Lennon’s side – with Charlie Mulgrew, James Forrest and Gary Hooper all outstanding – proved to be in a class of their own. And yet their hopes of a domestic treble were dashed by two of the Scottish game’s lesser-lauded football institutions.

Kilmarnock, the Scottish Premier League’s oldest club, provided the sensation of the season when they beat the champions-elect 1-0 at Hampden to claim the first League Cup of their 143-year history. Hearts then went one better, seeing off the Bhoys in the semi-final of the Scottish Cup before thrashing city rivals Hibernian 5-1 in the first all-Edinburgh final since 1896. It was also a season to remember for Motherwell, who profited from Rangers’ woes by securing a place in the UEFA Champions League qualifiers, and for St Johnstone, whose steady progress yielded a place in the UEFA Europa League.

It will get them on both ways as they would also have to have declared an outstanding loan on their mortgage papers as well!

  23. THE chief executive of Celtic FC has said the FAI has “no grounds” for refusing to sanction a top pre-season soccer tournament in Thomond Park this summer.

As revealed in the Limerick Leader last week, the FAI refused to sanction a lucrative tournament in the stadium that was to feature Champions League winners Chelsea, Celtic and two other leading European teams, on the grounds that they have their own tournament planned in Dublin.

“I don’t know on what grounds they could say no,” the Celtic chief executive Peter Lawwell said over the weekend.

“We are hopeful that the FAI can approve it and our advice is that they don’t really have any grounds not to approve it,” he said.

The FAI, who refused to comment, claimed in February to have an agreement in place with Iconic Worldwide Events to run a Dublin event.

Ennis businessman Damien O’Brien, who runs the company, has denied having such an agreement and said that he is instead trying to bring it to Limerick, claiming to have a four-year television deal already in place.

“I am trying to bring a tournament to Thomond Park because I have no agreement to take anything to the Aviva, which is an expensive stadium to hire and run,” he said.

Thomond Park boss John Cantwell said last week: “We received an offer from a leading promoter to hold a tournament with some big teams including Chelsea and Celtic and some European teams”.

“We obviously put in a request to the FAI, because we can’t hold it without sanction from them, but that hasn’t been forthcoming. The reason being given is that they have an alternative, another tournament planned for the same period,” he added.

  24. So Peter has no problem berating a Football Association from another country over a few kickabout games, but won’t berate our own SFA & SPL over a matter which could kill the game in this country???
