Doncaster on maintaining a fair league competition

563

“The tax default and reporting rules are an integral part of maintaining a fair league competition”.
Neil Doncaster, SPFL chief executive, November 2014.

“A fair league competition”. Strong words. I wonder if Mr Doncaster is keen to apply his ethics as evenly when it comes to a team with more than a couple of thousand fans. Don’t bet on it.

I suggested last week you ignore the comments coming out of Hampden about there being little appetite to look into the enormous levels of cheating which we now know went on is our game for over a decade. There is very little appetite from those occupying executive positions at Hampden, but they will not decide what happens.

Ultimate authority at the SFA and SPFL lies with the clubs, and more than just Celtic are alarmed by what went on, and the apparent flippancy show towards it in recent days by those paid to protect the honesty and reputation of our game.

Instincts exist within any organisation to protect itself. We’ve seen this play out in the Church (against their own), the police (against their own), Fifa (against their own), so it should be no surprise that those who worked, and became friends with, some of the architects of Rangers EBT scandal had little appetite to open an investigation.

An SFA or SPFL commission could lead to the disciplining of two-term SFA president, Campbell Ogilvies, or Sir David Murray, men who have made friends in the game for decades.

It would inevitably lead to the examination of the Resolution 12 issue (how Rangers were granted a licence to compete in the Champions League in 2011 when they didn’t meet the criteria). And this one is current enough to involve many still active in their roles.

And then there is the weighty matter of dealing with the consequences of what went on in our sport for all those years.

The demand of an investigation into what went on sounds reasonable but you cannot look into something corrupt without consequences, and that’s where corrupt systems work against fair competition.

Rangers rigged the system, their practises are as clear-cut a case of Financial Doping as you will find. They were playing by different rules, different tax rules and different player registration rules.

They failed to disclose information which should have been disclosed, but could have incriminated them. Unlike Craig Whyte, who was banned from the game for his duplicities, the directors who embarked on this great subversion have never been called to account.

Nor will they unless voices are heard across Scottish football. Don’t lose focus on getting angry (not yet, anyway), right now, we need fans of other clubs to share our concerns and let their voices be heard.  Winning allies is the first part of winning this debate, and that’s easier done by calmly making our point.

11 clubs suffered financial consequences of Rangers Financial Doping. Motherwell lost a minimum of £2.1m from not gaining access to European competition.  How would they feel if they were a cyclist half a mile behind Lance Armstrong in every race?  Would if be OK, as he didn’t get caught?

There’s a Christmas toy collection for Maryhill Foodbank at Wild Cabaret, THIS Saturday, 14 November, from midday to 4:30. Families who don’t have money for food don’t have money for Christmas toys. If you have something you can donate, drop it in. There’s mulled wine and mince pies on the go.

You’ll find Wild Cabaret at 18 Candleriggs (0141 552 6165).

  1. When Lord Drummond-Young released the Tribunals findings, the way I read it,when he referred to the “Former Rangers Club”,is that what is playing out of Ibrox just now must be the latter Rangers Club.

Former and Latter.Old and New.Same club myth nailed once and for all.Anybody else read it that way?

This is how I would like the Record Books to read (e.g. same as Wiki etc):

Italy ‘Serie A’ 2004-2005 – Not awarded [title revoked due to *Calciopoli].

Scotland SPL/SFA 2001-2009 – Not awarded [titles and cups marked* revoked due to tax evasion by RFC(IL)].

I am sure you only mean titles and cups won by the corrupt mob, everyone else can keep theirs

  3. Any of the tax cheats offered to pay the Tax owed yet, which would allow them to keep those trophies ? £1.1m due from Klos, £1.35m due from Ferguson, £1m from Dado Prso, £700k from De Beor or Novo, will I go on ?

If not prepared to pay your tax due, you would not have been there – let them all decide

And for whom and why would DBO challenge any court decision ?

The biggest creditor was already HMRC, are they going to challenge the biggest creditor, and for what reason ? Who would they be representing to gain an extra few pence in the pound ? Never going to happen

  5. Agree that this scandal, and its consequences, is everyone in Scottish Footballs responsibility. Every Club has been affected to their financial cost and to their Clubs Honours and history, (where have we heard that!!).

Its vital therefore that the facts are presented.. figures, in real terms and amounts are given, and the cover ups and denials are exposed.

Question.. How do we lobby every Club in the Country? How do we reach the ordinary fan? and, How do we build a united front, one voice.. simply seeking justice and fair play?

We are at a crossroads, lose this battle, and the game is up for football in Scotland.

  6. CowieBhoy, repaying the tax would not allow the trophies and titles to remain on the record, the crime was committed.

You don’t get to repay the bank you robbed after you get caught.

    You bear the consequences.

3-0 loss in every game they cheated in.

    It’s the only consequence.

    Everything else follows that.

I see Celtic managed to get an announcement out slamming fans for poppygate. Funny how they spring into action when its criticising their own supporters but they struggle when dealing with corruption!

As much as I hate to agree with you,(one time only)you are 100% right this time.I personally will give them time, but the evidence is there, the verdict is there, whats stopping you?.If we are waiting to see if BDO will challenge the verdict,OK,I will swallow that, but if they do not,you have a duty to take this as far as it goes.

    If not,vacate the seats.

Sipsini at 9.56, further to stuff about Boumsong.

When I bought a Sunday paper, the Scotland on Sunday, after the Boumsong signing was announced, there was an interview with Boumsong’s agent,Willie McKay.

McKay said in the article, he did not expect Boumsong to spend a full season at Ibrox as he got the impression duing the contract negotiations that Murray wantedto flog him as soon as he could. The January after Boumsong signed on at Ibrox, Boumsong moved to Newcastle, managed then by EBT recipient , Souness.

Another nice wee bit of manipulation at Ibrox was Murray somehow getting it valued at 120 million pounds, again no questions asked on why the stadium was valued so highly. I have very limited knowledge of accounting but I do know the valuation would have made the value of the stadium show as a plus on the accounts . This letting him show how much the club was worth and make easy access to bank credit even easier.

I don’t think that dumplin McLeish will ever be reminded by the media of his ludicrous 132 years of unsurpassed dignity comment ten years ago .

I was told by a Motherwell fan I know, he loathes the sticky buns, that McLeish , shall we say was not the most dignified of people with regard to money. He knew a director of Motherwell who told himthis.

  20. As much as I am against “Boycotts”I think that all Celtic fans should boycott the League Cup Semi,v Ross County. The sight of a near empty Hampden will do more to send shivers down the spines of those who want to stand idly by whilst the biggest scandal in sport Britain has seen,is allowed to go unpunished.

No one can tell me that Ross County fans are not angry, likewhise,St Johnstone,Hibs.A bit of communication between the fans involved could work wonders.Even Sky would have to comment,no matter how slightly.

This blog could, and should be pushing for this.We just cant sit back and wait for “Something to happen”.We have contacts with other fans blogs.Use them.

The fans have the power. Its time it was harnessed. Its no good coming on here and giving your opinion,no matter how valid. No one is listening.A public demonstration,in the public eye, will speak a million words.

Brought to the attention of the AICSC earlier. As I said earlier I don’t want my Celtic reports “mint sauced” but I don’t want them viewed through the prism of blue tinted spectacles. I know his stuff is syndicated but so too is Gavin Mc Caffertys and he has not acted as a hagiographer for the dead team.

Some of Esplins stuff recently has been outrageous and he needs to be called to account for it I.e in last Tuedays edition he reported the Dead team re emerging in the 4th tier of Scottish football. I exercised a right of reply in Thursday’s edition but my piece was edited beyond recognition.

I cant believe no one has picked up my thread about Schrodinger’s cat (sorry, no umlaut on my keyboard) …. I mean …. did the Celtic Board do something about Res 12, even if the average punter doesn’t know? …. its quantum indeterminacy at its most riveting!

    that’s it …I’m flouncing.

  25. Turkeybhoy

Never going to happen, too many taht want to go and support the team, a fair few on here in that club.

I have said many times in the past that one game, just one game, a coordinated boycott will work, the players will be up for it as much as the support, imagine this, the support turn up outside the ground, the players know fine well the score, can you really see the team not playing their hearts out for the chance of a level playing field, no me neither.

What I want is the sfa to be brought down, if this doesn’t happen, we must have an out to get into another association, we must, and our suits must know this, they would be derelict in their duty if they don’t.

  26. Rangers Football Club Ltd. (in liquidation), illegally acquired several “honours” (dishonours would be a better description). Some people refuse to admit what has to be done.

The records need to be cleansed. The rules need to be applied or the competitions are worthless.

The guilty party in the dock can certainly reach out to everybody in the courtroom, but can’t be allowed any more to dictate the sentence they might find acceptable.

  27. Turkeybhoy,

That Won’t ever happen, especially as the game is broadcast by BBC Scotland, and to be frank, because of the SFA/Rangers and Celtic debacle.

Strengthening the other teams isn’t an issue, in Scotland, so it seems.

The Celtic PLC Board, IMO, have to treat Sevco like they are a Gretna Club, not possibly ramp prices up. FFS.

Do you want to be a part of a Super League where Terry Maldinho is getting £300,000 a week, the Staff getting what?

People need to really start thinking about things.

Celtic is a totally Underdog Team, It can’t become a Super Rich club and Lord it over others. Far too many of the Support are Humble and having a person paid even £100,000 a week would not sit well.

Patience and let Ronny Build the Team as we bring the wage level down to a level that is not utterly obscene.
