Done in the name of Celtic fans

Saturday’s victory is unlikely to feature in the season’s highlights DVD but it was our ninth consecutive domestic win and despite a few shaky moments at the back we’ve conceded only twice during that run.  That compares to only three clean sheets in our nine previous domestic games.

Despite selecting from the same personnel, Celtic have a vastly improved defensive unit; comparable to last season’s record breakers.

Europe is different. We conceded home and away to Salzburg and Astra, keeping a clean-sheet only at home to Thursday’s opponents, Dinamo Zagreb.

Done in the name of Celtic fans yesterday:

Did you read that the Celtic Foundation hosted 120 people who use the services of the Glasgow Simon Community yesterday?  The Community have assisted the homeless for over 40 years.  Community chief exec, Lorraine McGrath, said, “Too many people still find themselves without a home; more than 6500 people registered as homeless in Glasgow last year alone.”

You can get involved with the Foundation’s work this Christmas by coming to the game a little early on Sunday and shaking a collection bucket.  As well as the Simon Community, the Foundation aim to help Glasgow East Women’s Aid, Spirit Aid, Loaves and Fishes, The Wayside Club, Glasgow City Mission, the Scottish Refugee Council, The Invisibles and Yorkhill Children’s Charity.

That’s an incredible amount of work to carry out in your name over the coming weeks.  You can sign up to help with the bucket collection here.  You’ll enjoy it.

The CQN Annual is coming off the presses this week.  It’s a full colour Celtic extravaganza.  Order yours HERE now in time for Christmas!

Nye Bevans, at the 4 4 game v the diedsters at Ibrox in 1986, the same Man from Del Monte comment was on a banner hung along the inside of the main stand, when we used to get part of it, so those in the hun end could see it.

Great banner that it was. It lasted less than five minutes before the polis tore the banner down.

My second favourite banner after the simple but very effective Scotland’s shame one.

Man phones Clyde wanting only to comment on Rangers. Mentions graffiti and the minutes silence at pittodrie.

Celtic supporter calls and mentions the famine song, jock stein smeer, the billy boys, Manchester…

never in all my years as a Celtic fan have i heard or seen any other celtic fan disrespect the ibrox disaster.

*and anybody that does wasn’t there and I don’t just mean at the game itself

I was there that fateful day…went up in the old Vale of Leven CSC bus….in the old coo shed close to the halfway line.

Big Billy was injured so TG was captain and our half back line was Brogan, Connolly and Hay.

It was a dour game played on a dreich day when suddenly in the 89th minute the Buzz Bomb broke away and thundered a shot off the bar……before the hun defense could react up popped the wee mhan to head home.

Cue bedlam among the Tim support…….the huns then kick off and head down the park where they get a thrown in….the ball comes to colin stein who equalizes….the feeling among the Celtic support later is that if Billy had been playing he would have taken care of the cross ball before it reaches stein.

As some of you may well know there was only one exit at the Celtic end at that time…..as we made our way round to it despondently people were actually dying…including 5 teenagers from Fife, a young lad from Liverpool and a young Canadian over on holiday with his stepfather…..we never knew.

There was no radio on the bus and no social media then and although sirens could be heard we put it down to the usual battling after he game.

When I arrived home Mrs. TT and the weans were in Dumbarton visiting her mother…the phone went and it was my da ….”oh yer home….terrible tragedy that”…”aye da imaging losing a goal like that in the last minute”….he went effin ballistic calling me an eejit before he realised I didnae know…..he was also upset as my brother was home from the colonies and he couldnae find him……turned the tele on and the reporters were over at ibrox.

Headed up to the nearest pub which was a bluenose shop…..lots of nervousness as no one knew where it had happened……on seeing me their worst fears were confirmed….it had happened at their end.

The following weeks were pretty somber in the country with Celtic extending the hand of friendship and grief….players and officials appearing at all services in the various Christian churches throughout the central belt…..money was raised in various work places and pubs for the disaster fund….could this end the bigotry…a feeling echoed by Big Jock.

The following Sunday during his sermon the Moderator of the Church of Scotland stated he wondered how colin stein felt knowing that his goal killed so many people….or words to that effect….the MSM jumped all over him and he was obliged to apologise for his wrong choice of words.

As part of the fund raising a benefit match was arranged approximately 4 weeks later between the Scottish national side and a select team of both clubs to be chosen by the Big Mhan and waddell…..George Best volunteered right away so it was to be 5 from each club side plus Georgie boy.

Didnae work out that way as deedle demanded certain players be picked and ham and egg to captain the side so Jock conceded the selection to him…..as a result we had 5 teddy bears…..Georgie……Peter Bonetti….and Bobby Charlton…plus 3 Tims….Bobby Murdoch….Big Billy….and the Bear.

In the Scotland side were Davie Hay and big Tam while Jim Craig subbed mckinnon…….stein also played for his country that night……die hard Paisley bluenose archie gemmell (worked with him at the Dalmuir flats where he wore deid team colours every day even though he was playing for the Buddies then) also played.

Scotland won 2-1 where a crowd of over 81,000 attended with a jam packed hun end which erupted to the chant “Gemmell’s a bassa”…and it wisnae archie either….even in their grief they coulnae help themselves…..the MSM which included the “voice of football” John Mackenzie and “were you at the game caller” James Sanderson didnae miss them and hit the wall.

In saying all that I’ve never ever ever heard a Celtic supporter saying anything derogatory about January 2, 1971……..we are not sheep…manure….liverpool…..or zombies.

is bankrupting.the country a labour monopoly?

labour, the govt of bliar, broon and dahlling harmed the poor nearly as much as they self harmed. The poor interest me deeply.Careerist shysters masquerading as a political party.

if I were to cast up labour abuse of power.I wd be here all night.I shall resist,my earlier post bout your one sided memory is akin to minty.

your paragraphs bout ‘problems’ ‘failures”global meltdown-

STILL NO INSIGHT INTO WHY LABOUR MESS UP.

labour tried v hard to ingratiate itself to the money markets. It failed and boy are the poor paying.

Markets dont like socialist governments, deregulating the banking, insurance whilst not enforcing laws liberalizing money markets.

Credits, all of them. Why the need for govt subsidy of any kind?

Surely the party of the workin man can bring laws to the table,to force employers to pay a wage, even with bliars majority he did not.instead he and brown followed the previous tory spending parameters(just like ed & ed are aligning with Gideon)

so much for a democracy eh.

p.s old folks/poor winter payment £250,I think your out there.

Finally may I ask if you follow the catholic faith?

I am content in mine.its been in this country for just over 1400

years. That comfort and confidence enables me to smile

    Lovely post.

I was 7 but remember the panic well, as you say no mobiles, social media or indeed many landlines.

My mum was up to high dough. My dad was at the Celtic end and her brother was at the rangers end. Dad arrived home and didn’t have a clue what was going on. Thankfully contact was made with my uncle later and he was safe too. A terrible thing to happen to anyone to go to a game and never return..

H.T Is there a particular reason why the Easter bunny bhoy has asked me to call you Mrs doubtfire?

Aye very funny. Tell Easter Bhoy there’ll be no instructions if he doesn’t behave :-)

  15. My dad was at that game and was driving one of the Greenock CSC buses, got home about 2hrs late, it was a long wait. My cousin was in the other end at Ibrox, he didn’t come home from the game, terrible disaster.
