Don’t blame defenders, this one was down to tactics

1712

It’s a well-established fact that we don’t have Beckenbauer and Baresi at the back, so the reason why we chose to play so high up the field is the most alarming element of last night’s debacle.

Dedryck was bound to misplace a pass, or Efe was bound to misread play. We all knew this. Regret over the last time mistakes like this were made doesn’t mean they won’t happen again. So when the inevitable occurred, our two full backs were 30 yards in front of the line of opposition attack, with our defensive mids well into opposition territory.

Efe’s failure to cover Kamara and Dedryck’s pass were consequences of the main mistake of the night, which was tactical.  We didn’t lose the opening goal because of a bad pass, it was lost because we left an acre of Norway unattended.

Ronny, you should never have left so much space at the back away from home in Europe, we’re clearly not good enough for such an open system, not even close.  We’ve learned nothing since what was supposed to be a lesson in Warsaw, when the same expansive errors cost us.  Molde played rope-a-dope football, they could have watched us against Malmo, Maribor and Legia, as each opened their home games against us in exactly the same manner.

It must be an absolute joy to face a European opponent at home who leaves so much space at the back, begging to be exploited.  If we had played with the same tactics we used in Amsterdam I’ve no doubt we would have won the game – no one in that Molde squad would get into the Celtic team.

There’s more.  After dominating possession and creating genuine chances, the defeat looked inevitable from the 11th minute when we went behind. Body language changed in an instant and Celtic went out like a light.  I’ll spare you what I said at the time in case it’s misconstrued, but the evidence suggests there’s more to worry about than repeating the same tactical mistakes.

Celtic have nine months and one and a half transfer windows to get ready for the next Champions League qualifiers.  There’s plenty of time to put things right, but we can’t sleepwalk into another failure.  More immediately, we could be out of a cup if we don’t pull our act together this week.

The original Holy Goalie, our own John Fallon, will be signing copies of his book, and no doubt giving you his thoughts on current events, at the Supporters’ Club on London Road on Sunday from 12:30.  All are welcome.  There’s live entertainment too, so get along and check it out.

Agree entirely. Common sense to give O’Connell some game time and see how he goes. Only way we will ever know if he can become a Celtic player. Instead we spend 7 figures on a bloke like Blackett who isn’t going to be here next year. So there’s the myth of planning for the CL qualifiers exposed again.

Instead O’Connell is punted down to the lower leagues in England – what is he going to learn there? – and picks up a bad injury that keeps him out of football for months.

  2. Always a pleasant surprise on here to read a post starting with ” Listen you,ya ignorant prick”. LOL

  3. the glorious balance sheet-It’s baffling and a total waste of money, never been keen on loan players,Denayer included btw.

Chick young is probably talking out of his @rse.. Or extrapolating Lawwell’s claim that he Huns in the same league add £10m to Celtic income- both absolute pish in my opinion.

Anyhow as long as we can keep selling players like VVD Wanyama etc we can throw away £1 m/ month. Selling Biton in January can see us thought to June.

    That’s Peternomics for you

My guess is that less kids can afford to even get on the radar. I really believe this. In Aberdeen a good U14 player needs £500 plus a year to take part. Fees are about £200, boots ( £150) kit and travel. I see less and less working class kids taking part. Sad.

*I coached under16s this summer, all 17 lads wore coloured boots, one in particular was a bit of an enigma he wore pink boots, I was giving him a hard time one night about his performance i.e. hitting the ball too far in front of him resulting in tripping over the goalie on a one on one or running out of the park with the ball. I blamed his boots, next week he showed with fluorescent green ones.

Don’t know if it was the new boots, the bit of advice I gave him or switching him to attacking left mid from striker, i.e. big Yogi, but he turned intae a goal scoring machine.

We started out the season 4231 and got off tae a flyer, the players got carried away with this and suggested we go 2 up front, we played a team that we eat easily on opening day and lost 2-3, that score flattered us tae as we scored in the last minute. we were outplayed in he midfield.

At the practice on the Thursday night they admitted to being wrong and we went back to 4231. We won the double scoring 71 goals and only 4 shut outs a we were an attacking side.

I feel the same. I think the idea is that the player stays a year, wins something and then feels comfortable committing to playing in Scotland. Reality is that most of them are here and never feature much. When they do feature they see this as having proven themselves and promptly head back to whichever club “owns” them in the hope of a regular 1st team start. That doesn’t seem to happen much either. But on a more important note – it leaves us with the problem of replacing a regular every time it happens. See : Denayer

And while I’m about , much more chance of the board making a statement when the club finances are questioned

Silence regarding the referees is so predictable

The only reason there was a statement after Inverness playing with two goalkeepers was because the club was bombarded with phone calls wanting the board to grow a pair

An tearman, Norrie Fulton , physique wise, reminded me a bit of Joe Harper.

That junior cup final was the first time I saw Norrie. Not the most mobile of players but he knew where the goal was.

    Thanks for posting the footage.

  13. Been some great comments on here by true Celtic supporters over the last day and a half, (and the usual expected bile from those who would love to have a team like ours to support). When you as long in the tooth as I am and have been through the barren years and the highs and lows, the bitter disappointments and the unbelievable results, you tend know that that its part of football and its part of being Celtic, but we’ll succeed again in the not too distant future. We’ve had some great performances this season (yea, and some shockers) but look where we are.. would any other Club in Scotland like to be where we are today?? I’m certain they would.

I’ll be there tmorra, (and next week)..

Just wondering Ghuys… your team selection for tmorra?? Who would you start with and what formation.??

  14. Andrew Kerins Green and White Army-The Board are quite happy for blogs like this, for fans to vent their spleen on various complaints re hun refs etc. They think it saves them from growing a pair, and challenging the SFA,and Fleming’s Sevco Fan Club.

Just saw your post re Norrie Fulton, very sad.

Some of the family, I think Norrie was one of them, sat in the same row as us at Parkhead for years. I quite often see Stevie Fulton at the gym.

  16. I don’t mind loans in general as long as it is part of an overall strategy. For example, if in January we identified a player (let’s say a left back) who was to join us on a Bosman in summer I wouldn’t object to a six month loan for another left back. Or if someone were injured in pre-season and faced a few months out then a loan to cover the injury period and some transition time to reintegrate the injured guy would also be fine. Equally, has the Guidetti loan been part of a plan to give Scepovic a season to bed in without the burden of being the only goalscorer but ready to step up this year that would have been fine too. Even the Denayer signing, a high class player for twelve months to give us time to identify the right man would be fine, but losing him knowing VVD would leave at the same time was poor planning – much better to have brought someone in who would still be here this year and smooth the transition between VVD and (probably) the Croatian lad.

But no, we do it for no real purpose that is obvious, unless it is a consequence of having our fingers burnt on the likes of Balde and Pukki before. Or it is panic signings because we haven’t identified or managed to get the players we really want.

  17. ANDYR53, I’d start with Bailey, Lustig, Tierney, Simunovic, Boyata, Brown, Bitton, Allan, Commons, Ciftci & Griffiths.

Hamiltontim, I was at a reserve game at Celtic Park , the same day we lost at Ibrox.

Chris Morris scored our first at Ibrox and all of a sudden there was a huge roar from someone a few rows behind me. It was Norrie cheering our goal , he had a wee tranny (before it had a different meaning ) .

Norrie passing away is a great loss to his family and friends.

May his soul rest in peace.

  23. Regarding the remark of chic young.

Dose anyone think he will say that he is basing it on Peter lawell saying that Celtic were losing 10 million as sevco where not in the premier league?

There fore he will say that it is based on a season.

I don’t have any problem with anyone wearing a poppy.

But I do have a problem with someone who has a problem with me or anyone else NOT wearing one.

*I never wore a poppy at hame, nothing to do with the RA or a dreary new years eve, just never saw any reason tae wear one even though I had family of Irish background who fought in WWI and WWII.

However, since I came here 40+ years ago and read of the sacrifices that Canadians made and still do to try and sustain democracy, I wear one now.

It should be noted though at after the 11:00 services on 11/11 poppies should be removed. Not do so is said to be showing disrespect to the fallen and the ones that are left.
