Don’t blame defenders, this one was down to tactics

1712

It’s a well-established fact that we don’t have Beckenbauer and Baresi at the back, so the reason why we chose to play so high up the field is the most alarming element of last night’s debacle.

Dedryck was bound to misplace a pass, or Efe was bound to misread play. We all knew this. Regret over the last time mistakes like this were made doesn’t mean they won’t happen again. So when the inevitable occurred, our two full backs were 30 yards in front of the line of opposition attack, with our defensive mids well into opposition territory.

Efe’s failure to cover Kamara and Dedryck’s pass were consequences of the main mistake of the night, which was tactical.  We didn’t lose the opening goal because of a bad pass, it was lost because we left an acre of Norway unattended.

Ronny, you should never have left so much space at the back away from home in Europe, we’re clearly not good enough for such an open system, not even close.  We’ve learned nothing since what was supposed to be a lesson in Warsaw, when the same expansive errors cost us.  Molde played rope-a-dope football, they could have watched us against Malmo, Maribor and Legia, as each opened their home games against us in exactly the same manner.

It must be an absolute joy to face a European opponent at home who leaves so much space at the back, begging to be exploited.  If we had played with the same tactics we used in Amsterdam I’ve no doubt we would have won the game – no one in that Molde squad would get into the Celtic team.

There’s more.  After dominating possession and creating genuine chances, the defeat looked inevitable from the 11th minute when we went behind. Body language changed in an instant and Celtic went out like a light.  I’ll spare you what I said at the time in case it’s misconstrued, but the evidence suggests there’s more to worry about than repeating the same tactical mistakes.

Celtic have nine months and one and a half transfer windows to get ready for the next Champions League qualifiers.  There’s plenty of time to put things right, but we can’t sleepwalk into another failure.  More immediately, we could be out of a cup if we don’t pull our act together this week.

The original Holy Goalie, our own John Fallon, will be signing copies of his book, and no doubt giving you his thoughts on current events, at the Supporters’ Club on London Road on Sunday from 12:30.  All are welcome.  There’s live entertainment too, so get along and check it out.

I think you might be referring to Radio Clyde today, so much for Mr Keevins never talking about a manager while in a job (ie the Sleekit one) I was listening earlier and was partly annoyed but then found it amusing, Mr Keevins is a joke full stop, suitably assisted with Derek J another clown or maybe am the fool for listening to them…….

Tontine Tim, Canadian soldiers in world war 2 were given some of the most dangerous tasks and suffered greatly , the Dieppe raid for example, and in my mind , have never received proper recognition for their contribution.

My dad was stationed in Aldershot in 1946. He avoided the Canadian troops as much as possible. Not because he didn’t like them but because they were really frustrated and angry that they still hadn’t been demobbed fifteen months after the war finished. They were involved in a lot of fights . Some of them had been away from home for five years.

Good to see a different startind 11 from Corcelts.. young Teirney in both starting 11’s.. Why not.

We should have enough in depth to rest and change players as required.

    Armstrong and GMS v United?!

I heard him “once” talking about Ricky Burns the boxer a year or two back, he actually was really enthusiastic and sounded like a journalist, when it comes to football his attitude is pretty pathetic, considering its paid for all his daughters weddings, anyway, today’s RC was like a free dig at Ronny, only one who sort of sounded pretty fair was Gordon flipping Dalzeil, it’s a sad day when Gordon is the sensible one……by the way I listen to Clyde all the time, it gives me a sense of perspective as I realise how easy it is for them to have a dig whenever possible

Roll on the morra Kris Commons hat-trick !

  15. Whether you agree or disagree with Ronny one thing for sure is that he now has to make some big decisions if he wants to succeed.

The KC saga will not die with a whimper and I expect some crowd reaction tomorrow.

Ronny has to decide what his back 4 is going to be for the long term and stick with it.

Janko good enough? I believe so and given a run in the team will be fine.

Young Tierney used with Izzy and then to take over? Not sure.

2 Centre Halves have to be his priority, Boyata, Ambrose,Simunovic. Blackett, Mulgrew, Lustig even.

Pick 2 for a long term and stick with it and make the rest play for the place.

Midfield , well we could be here all day as the shape does not look right at all to me.

Up front we now have a natural finisher in Griff but does he need a target man in CC or NC?

As I say a lot of possible unpopular choices to be made but if he does not his days could well be numbered.

I for one want him to make the hard decisions and prove every critic wrong as you cannot question his passion.

Will he be given the time?

Hope we sort all this out as Celtic are bigger than any individual.

    Mincey.

Sheep stagger eh i had to have a double take on that one

  17. PeterLatchfordsBelly on

Ronny will go. Just a matter of time. Seen this story play out many times before, just waiting for his Mogga St Mirren moment. It’s coming. The bigger story is KC’s strop. All revolts require a figurehead and this one against our club’s management is going to be him, whether he intends it or not. His frustration is so powerful because it taps into the zeitgeist of the fans. He’s is roundly sick of being surrounded by inferior players and livid when subbed to make way for them. He knows they couldn’t lace his boots.

All empires fall when they lose the support of their subjects and that’s exactly how Lawwell and Desmond appear to see us. Unaccountable, self serving, conceited and taking us for fools. The rumblings are beginning Pedro and there are portents here of the Kelly and White era. My advice is get out before it turns ugly and the club’s history may even remember you fondly. I don’t doubt you’ll pay yourself a nice severance as you can never have too much money, can you? Maybe your boy can get you a job at Man C from where coincidentally we’ve recruited so actively lately. Stay too long and you’ll be forced out by a fan base that either disengages or enrages. Your strategy is redundant Pete, it doesn’t even equip us to compete with the Molde’s and Malmo’s of this world. Time’s up, go with dignity.

  18. An tearman…

Did you catch johnjames blog from Thursday RST V Philmac ?

Aye very good Mowbray at live street to Milde in Norway canny remember St Mirren beating Fenerbache & drawing with Ajax and Celtic top of the league, not the best analogy but if you think the situations are the same batter in fling in Marc Antoine Fortune at £4m and wee Leigh up front, do you think they are comparable ?

  20. Stairheedrammy on

Sportscenes guest sevconians trying their hardest to argue a draw is an ideal result for the sheep today as they prepare to face us. Strange there is no mention of pressure on McInnes after a 5 game winless run.

  21. ANDYR53 on 24TH OCTOBER 2015 5:13 PM

For me Izzy and Efe have made one too many mistakes at Euro level. Their respective Celtic careers should be over at the end of this season and whilst i would still use them between now and then it’s time to see if Tierney has what it takes.

No worries about GMS and Armstrong, have both played and did well against Utd before.

  22. The No.13 Shorts on

Kris Commons cares only about Kris Commons. Ronny’s biggest ever management mistake was his weak moment in agreeing that the egotistical tube should be given a new contract the last time the management was under pressure and Commons was scheming against them as leverage to gain said contract. Commons is a average player in a particularly shite team. Perspective. Big picture.

  23. Corckcelt…

The humping of the sheep will only deflect from the problems we have at the moment.

To be honest, I don’t no where to start. HH

  24. Minceyheidman on 24th October 2015 5:15 pm

Agree about a settled back 4, but more importantly where they play at the back. Not only has the personell changed, but so has their positions.

We’ll get it right, and kick on.. Remember, we lost our 2 very settled C B’s at the same, and saw injuries (Mulgrew, Lustig) and loss of form to the others.

    Mon the Hoops tmorra.

  25. The No.13 Shorts on

….and if you think Kris Commons is something special then it’s you thst’s down-sizing, not Peter Lawell.
