Don’t blame defenders, this one was down to tactics

1712

It’s a well-established fact that we don’t have Beckenbauer and Baresi at the back, so the reason why we chose to play so high up the field is the most alarming element of last night’s debacle.

Dedryck was bound to misplace a pass, or Efe was bound to misread play. We all knew this. Regret over the last time mistakes like this were made doesn’t mean they won’t happen again. So when the inevitable occurred, our two full backs were 30 yards in front of the line of opposition attack, with our defensive mids well into opposition territory.

Efe’s failure to cover Kamara and Dedryck’s pass were consequences of the main mistake of the night, which was tactical.  We didn’t lose the opening goal because of a bad pass, it was lost because we left an acre of Norway unattended.

Ronny, you should never have left so much space at the back away from home in Europe, we’re clearly not good enough for such an open system, not even close.  We’ve learned nothing since what was supposed to be a lesson in Warsaw, when the same expansive errors cost us.  Molde played rope-a-dope football, they could have watched us against Malmo, Maribor and Legia, as each opened their home games against us in exactly the same manner.

It must be an absolute joy to face a European opponent at home who leaves so much space at the back, begging to be exploited.  If we had played with the same tactics we used in Amsterdam I’ve no doubt we would have won the game – no one in that Molde squad would get into the Celtic team.

There’s more.  After dominating possession and creating genuine chances, the defeat looked inevitable from the 11th minute when we went behind. Body language changed in an instant and Celtic went out like a light.  I’ll spare you what I said at the time in case it’s misconstrued, but the evidence suggests there’s more to worry about than repeating the same tactical mistakes.

Celtic have nine months and one and a half transfer windows to get ready for the next Champions League qualifiers.  There’s plenty of time to put things right, but we can’t sleepwalk into another failure.  More immediately, we could be out of a cup if we don’t pull our act together this week.

The original Holy Goalie, our own John Fallon, will be signing copies of his book, and no doubt giving you his thoughts on current events, at the Supporters’ Club on London Road on Sunday from 12:30.  All are welcome.  There’s live entertainment too, so get along and check it out.

  1. Dallas Dallas where the heck is Dallas on 24th October 2015 4:55 pm

Tontine Tim, Canadian soldiers in world war 2 were given some of the most dangerous tasks and suffered greatly , the Dieppe raid for example, and in my mind , have never received proper recognition for their contribution.

*there’s a cracking book out there by James Leasor called the Green Beach, it’s about radar expert Jack Nissenthall, of Polish Jewish expat parents, who in 1942 volunteered for a suicidal mission to join a combat team who were making a surprise landing at Dieppe in occupied France. His assignment was to penetrate a German radar station on a cliff above “Green Beach”.

He was attached to the South Saskatchewan Regiment a small unit of 11 men his as bodyguards. Due to the highly sensitive nature of his knowledge of Allied radar technology, his Saskatchewan bodyguard unit were under orders to kill him if necessary to prevent him being captured. He also carried a cyanide pill as a last resort.[

  2. An tearman, a wee update….

    Comfortably Funded?

The transparency that was promised from our mendacious shyster board has been unfulfilled. This is why so many of us must read between the lines and dismiss almost everything from the Herald Group due to their commercial relationship with Level 5. The fiscal challenges of this season would not have been insurmountable had any of the principals been willing to put more than a £4.5m loan to equity on the table. However we now know that almost all of this amount and ST receipts has been expended. Our cash position prior to the QOS and Livingstone games was just £170,000, with pay at the gate receipts after tax and policing costs earning circa £400,000. Match day spend and catering (which is outsourced to Azure) delivers circa £192,000 for crowds of 45,000 or more and circa £72,500 from the 17,300 a the Training Cup QF.

Player’s payroll, which is now only paid for 11 months in every year due to King abolishing paid leave, is circa £455,000 per month with employer’s NI contribution of circa £63,000.W&W, including NI, draw down £36K per month. and we should assume a similar amount for salaries to our MD & company secretary.

So all that would be left would be £244.500 to pay the club doctor, the ASA director, Ian Durrant and other coaching staff, admin staff, utility bills and finance costs. I predict that there will be no cash in the Metro Bank account at month end. November will be another precarious balancing act, with significant outlays for litigation to consider. Should Green prevail, then there is no possibility of balancing the books.

Green’s costs will expose King. The revenue stream that he hopes to earn from Rangers First CIC will not deliver until the end of January. Three months of a hand to mouth existence was going to be tight, but if Green’s contract is as iron-clad, as many believe, King will be forced to call George Taylor or Douglas Park to ask for assistance. He has already tried their patience by not bringing anything to the table. He continues to owe one or both of them £2.5m for his equity. The £1.5m that he was alleged to provide was a lie. Taylor and Park have put up £7m of the £8m required, so will be loathe to provide more funding to King and will be growing impatient with his ‘technical difficulties’ in South Africa. This is why Douglas Park stepped down from the board as he saw himself being cast as King’s banker of last resort.

Next season will be even more difficult. CFC’s revenue is circa £60-£75m, with the higher figure contingent upon CL group stage participation. Their player budget is £30m. They consistently buy players at £1m-£3m then sell at £10-£14m. As we discovered with Scott Allan, all we could offer was £175,000 plus improbable CL add-ons. Next season will be no different due to the paucity of the board.Achieving a place in the top six will be difficult, as Hearts, Aberdeen, St Johnstone and CFC are superior. ICT and Ross County will be vying for the other two places.

King has offered a bonus of £25,000 to each player should they remain in the top tier. However, given that he removed their holiday pay, which will be £20,000 this season and £32,000 in 2017, they will still be out of pocket.

Desperate measures from our desperate chairman.

Agree about a settled back 4, but more importantly where they play at the back. Not only has the personell changed, but so has their positions.

We’ll get it right, and kick on.. Remember, we lost our 2 very settled C B’s at the same, and saw injuries (Mulgrew, Lustig) and loss of form to the others.

*Yip that’s the way I see it.

  6. Looking forward to the game tomorrow with all the Celtic fans that can make it, including the disappointed, a handful of whom were in Norway as recently as Thursday night, – suppporters eh?

There are entrenched views, some of which border on hysterical, the most disasterous of which in my opinion is a change of course, especially when we’ve men in charge who’ve already proved that they have no clue in what way that change of course would take us, for all we know it’s Owen Coyle?

So best we stick with the regime, that doesn’t do so well in Europe, even for the time being.

It really is that simple, and here’s what won’t happen, but something similar should.

  8. Really sorry to hear about Norrie Fulton, he was a bit of a hero to us wee Celtic fans in the late 60’s early 70’s – followed his Junior career, his Dad was also among the ‘men’ in the Greenick CSC when I used to attend every game with my uncle in the ‘punting over’ days – I even met up with young Stephen when I was teaching.

Thoughts and prayers with the Fulton family.

Woooo, Big Carlton on from the start partering Leigh??.. No reason why shouldn’t be able to take a punt tmorra… I would expect United to play it tight and not push up on too many occasions.

Tomorrow, at home against a relatively weak United and vulnerable side should give us the opportunity to try something new.

Clogher, sad news about Maureen O’Hara.

One of her films was on film four today, Rare Breed, where she played of all things, an English toff.

She was a beautiful woman, very proud of being Irish. Her fight with the American legal system not be classed as English but Irish , is a great memory to have of her.

Her performances in the Quiet Man and Mclintock were terrific . She was stunning looking in the original version of the Parent Trap.

May her soul rest in peace.

I like that team. Perhaps Ronny’s replacement is right here under our noses on CQN !

I remember Neil Lennon famously saying that sticking with Sammi could get him the sack. That was perhaps a bit tongue in cheek and not likely to happen .

If Ronny persists with Johansen however………………………..

  16. Dallas Dallas where the heck is Dallas on

Andy, I would have Kris on the bench. Although I understand why he went off on one on Thursday, Ronny has to show he’s the boss and by starting Kris, I feel his position would be even more compromised.

Liked your post earlier today about why you support us. I feel the same.

  17. So, the Commons Conundrum??

Does Ronny prove himself to be The Strong Manager by dropping Kris tomorrow?

Or does he prove himself a bigger man by playing him because the team needs him and the discipline issue has already been addressed?

Either way, if it goes wrong, there will be plenty of post-hoc criticism and Monday morning quarterback to prove that either way was the wrong way.

Anyway, I expect us to put United away and it should buy him some time. The run of matches away to hearts, Home to Aberdeen and home to Molde, on Guy Fawkes Night, will also be big tests. He faced it down last year by qualifying from Europa, running inter close, and horsing Aberdeen in the league.

He did it once already. He may do it again but, like Gordon Strachan, he may find it difficult to win fans back.

  18. Great!!.. Thursday nightmare now seems a memory.. everyone lookin to the game tmorra, Confident, Positive, keen to see the Bhoys on the park.

Clogher, the BBC website has a nice obituary for Maureen.

I didn’t know her surname was FitzSimons but a film mogul said the surname was too long and changed it to her stage name, O’Hara.
