Don’t blame defenders, this one was down to tactics

1712

It’s a well-established fact that we don’t have Beckenbauer and Baresi at the back, so the reason why we chose to play so high up the field is the most alarming element of last night’s debacle.

Dedryck was bound to misplace a pass, or Efe was bound to misread play. We all knew this. Regret over the last time mistakes like this were made doesn’t mean they won’t happen again. So when the inevitable occurred, our two full backs were 30 yards in front of the line of opposition attack, with our defensive mids well into opposition territory.

Efe’s failure to cover Kamara and Dedryck’s pass were consequences of the main mistake of the night, which was tactical.  We didn’t lose the opening goal because of a bad pass, it was lost because we left an acre of Norway unattended.

Ronny, you should never have left so much space at the back away from home in Europe, we’re clearly not good enough for such an open system, not even close.  We’ve learned nothing since what was supposed to be a lesson in Warsaw, when the same expansive errors cost us.  Molde played rope-a-dope football, they could have watched us against Malmo, Maribor and Legia, as each opened their home games against us in exactly the same manner.

It must be an absolute joy to face a European opponent at home who leaves so much space at the back, begging to be exploited.  If we had played with the same tactics we used in Amsterdam I’ve no doubt we would have won the game – no one in that Molde squad would get into the Celtic team.

There’s more.  After dominating possession and creating genuine chances, the defeat looked inevitable from the 11th minute when we went behind. Body language changed in an instant and Celtic went out like a light.  I’ll spare you what I said at the time in case it’s misconstrued, but the evidence suggests there’s more to worry about than repeating the same tactical mistakes.

Celtic have nine months and one and a half transfer windows to get ready for the next Champions League qualifiers.  There’s plenty of time to put things right, but we can’t sleepwalk into another failure.  More immediately, we could be out of a cup if we don’t pull our act together this week.

The original Holy Goalie, our own John Fallon, will be signing copies of his book, and no doubt giving you his thoughts on current events, at the Supporters’ Club on London Road on Sunday from 12:30.  All are welcome.  There’s live entertainment too, so get along and check it out.

What would be gained by not starting KC tomorrow ? KCs reaction to being subbed on Thursday was over the top but he has apologised and we all move on. Not starting KC will only fuel the situation further. KC is a must start for me.

    ====================================

I agree, not to start KC would look petty, as he apologised, thats what our detractors want so they can perpetuate the ” strief in the dressing room ” angle.

I think KC was wrong, and I think RD was poorly prepared despite all his talk, apart from poor tactics the major detriment to our performance was the deterioration of the conditions,we were not prepared and could not cope, but no change to method or formation.

    Very poor..

  2. Gftb indeed we will all be at CP to tomorrow supporting the hoops as always. But being part of Celtic comes with it a tradition and a responsibility to be the best we can be. That includes those running the club, the management, the players and us supporters. At the moment that is not happening. HH

They have only been going three years and he beat them first go.

I do recall the MIB that day prevented a riot by calling back Leigh when 1on1.

Can we do better? Of course we can. Is Ronny Deila the world’s greatest manager? No he is not. However he is not the worst in the world either.

Celtic are my team, I do not look to them for my moral compass when deciding how to vote or whether to contribute to charity that is my job.

I do not hold Celtic to a different standard from any other business or group I interact with, I love Celtic and have done since I made my Daddies second favourite moment in November 1966 :-))

  4. Dallas Dallas where the heck is Dallas on

Roy, thanks again fot your good posts today and the pictures posted also.

Great picture of our players celebrating Sutton’s goal the five star whitewash game.

Good picture also of Mark Reid , Tommy and wee Gordon.

If Mark Reid had a bit more pace , he would have been an even better player. I still admire the bottle he showed scoring the last minute penalty in the 1984 league cup final. He didn’t half skelp it into the net. He was a very good penalty taker.

  5. Flights/Hotel booked for the Ajax game. Go on the Tic.

Celtic minus 2 tomorrow might help pay for it. We live in hope.

Roy hope yer keeping well ya legend.

Keep the faith Tims. Disappointed but we all have known times that have been much worse. Hopefully it will be turned around.

Celtic a club and cause worth fighting for.

Gordon64… We have a laugh and a joke but Thursday was not a very good night, but I do think many over react and many might decry the media but believe what they feed them, I prefer to laugh and make must own mind up, but we live and learn, as far as I am concerned we are top of the league and in every winnable competition, am not as stupid as I make out, and I know things could be better but I am still with Ronny & Kris, might be the wrong road but it’s the one road for now

Roy C….. the day we sit back (whatever seat on whatever bus) is the day to chuck it, we are all gutted but trust me …… Others will always be far worse off…..

Tomorrow is another day, am afraid blind or not am still with Ronny & Kris

  7. Owen-as a ST holder of 28 years,i have missed 7 home games in that time,3 were for births,my 3 wonderful kida all born on a Saturday….i can assure you i have never berated,or booed a player wearing our jersey,or at FT after a bad result mate.I don’t like calling for any man to lose his job,but IMO Ronny won’t be there next season,so get an experienced manager in now ,and get us set for CLQs.HH

Clogher, sorry for not replying sooner with regard your post about Maureen O’Hara’s autobiography.

Another to my list of christmas presents , Maureen’s, john Fallon’s, Neil Mochan’s autobiographies along with the book Tontine recommended about the ill fated raid on Dieppe.

  13. Paul67 et al

To the best of my knowledge I have never looked forward to the next season before the clocks were even turned back. I am not about to start now.

  14. Gerryfaethebrig on

Mark Reid was the only left footed footballer I felt comfortable hitting a penalty !

Roy C… On Thursday night when Kris C scored, I was jumping about the living room like a madman thinking we’re going to beat this mob, I think Alan Muir came on and let Molde take centre while our Bhoys were still celebrating, still mystified how the ball was in our box in literally seconds, by the way the taking centre thing when other team is not in their own half has been known……

  15. Best Celtic Memories.

    1) Stopping their ten. The flexing of the North Stand Upper will live with me forever.

    2) Winning the Paradise Windfall. Being asked what I would send it on and saying a goal against them, I won it on 1/1/94 I think.

    3) Stuttgart on the way to Seville. Even after going 2 up we lost 3-2 and then on the big screen they put up “see you at Anfield Road” class.

    4) Celtic v Liverpool in Jock Stein’s testimonial and a wee Liverpool lad was told to wave his flag when they scored by a big glaswegian fella after his dad had told him to be careful.

    5) Any day I make it to Celtic Park.
