Echoes of great Celtic teams

1910

I thought it was the emerging influence of Nir Biton as a central midfield influence who transformed Celtic against Hearts on Sunday; he looked that good.  If anything, Celtic were better in his absence last night, more fluid, more incisive, against a better team.

It’s all about shape.  The correct shape gives players time on the ball when they need it, allows them to look industrious, not static, and makes them difficult to counteract.  The only two questions are: can we maintain it, and when was the last time a Celtic team controlled the ball like this?

Forget about trying to maintain this in Barcelona, that’s far too risky, but if we can play like this at Tynecastle and Fir Park we can do so anywhere else in Scotland.  Don’t think we’ve played like this since the Centenary Season.

It’s difficult to interpret the vandalism at Fir Park last night.  As Celtic fans we don’t have a point of reference for this stuff.  “Had enough.  Won’t be back at another away game”, was the verdict of a friend I spoke to, who has probably missed no more than 40 domestic away games in the last 40 years.  The proportion of Celtic fans who would never vandalise seats is well above 99%, but there’s a new and unwelcome phenomenon in British football and Celtic have the best views in the country.

Getting back to more familiar ground, The Kano Foundation asked me to pass on this message:

“The Kano Foundation World Cup 2014 Predictor

Friends,

2013 has been a world class year for The Kano Foundation. We’ve had our first ever bucket collection, held our 3rd annual dance, welcomed groups from across Scotland, England and Ireland, and last but by no means least we will welcome our 2000th child to Celtic Park. All this would not be possible without your unwavering support.

As we move towards the new year, The Kano Foundation are always keen to continue our work while bringing you the fans new and exciting ways to support us. The fabulous prizes on offer at our Golf Day in September are just one example.

To keep up this form, we are delighted to announce a very special competition ahead of the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

We will be running a predictor competition unlike many others. At first reading our two part predictor is very similar to others where you enter the scores and winners for the 72 games.

However, we are also offering an unbelievable bonus prize fund of £10,000 for anyone who can correctly predict the outcome of all 48 group games . Yes, that’s correct – £10,000 to be shared amongst all entrants who can correctly predict the general outcome (winner or draw) for the all the group games.

In order to run both competitions we are asking entrants to make a one-off donation of £10. From the funds raised 50% will go as a donation to TKF with the remaining 50% available for prizes.

With just 100 entrants, not only can we raise a £500 prize fund for the predictor, we can also take over 200 kids to a game at Celtic Park. A tidy reward for a just few minutes brain effort!

All you need to do to enter is register you interest by email at:

wcpredictor@thekanofoundation.com Please include TKFWCPred as the email/paypal subject and tell us your user/team name so we can verify your entry. If you’ve not got enough room, enter as much detail as you can and tell us what you’ve done so we help.

Then make your payment into The Kano Foundation bank account (30-13-01 00989961 through Paypal or by sms by texting KANO11 £10 to 70070 – remember to include your name/email address.

Visit our predictor webpage (coming soon) to find more details and follow your progress

Once again, we hope we can rely on your support to make this predictor a success for us in terms of fundraising and for potentially making one of you £10,000 richer!

Thank You

The Kano Foundation”

Congratulations to the Celtic fans who run and support The Kano Foundation, our community is rightly proud of the. Register your interest by emailing: wcpredictor@thekanofoundation.com.

I liked you first part of the post,

    BUT

As a balding, grey haired sexygenerian, you lost me when you boasted about your fine head of hair. I’m not jealous. Honestly. Well not much.

To be serious for a moment, I think we should wait a few days before condemning an identifiable and high profile group of fans for the actions of a few hooligans.

Let’s find out who the real culprits are and then take action from within our club to eradicate the behaviour. We have had a good reputation in the past for self policing and we have managed to cut out the unruly elements from earlier ages.

I have had the pleasure of meeting the very fine Celtic man Hamiltontim , I class him as a friend and an all round Gentleman. The first time I had the pleasure of meeting the CQN bhoys for a beer, on a smoke break one of the well known chaps on here told me that he had never met any of the CQN that he didn’t like, I know exactly what he means. Hail Hail.

I was surprised about how quickly Chico expressed his outrage at the seat vandalism.

After the game he concentrated on this aspect rather than the fine display.

It seems these things are only brought to light when we are involved.

I am normally a lurker not an commenter but I had to come on tonight to state what a fantastically eloquent post from Brogan Rogan.

A superb piece of adult comment that sums up my support of my club. I only hope that everyone has read it and realises that these petulant acts can’t go on.

I am political, but I leave that for rants at the TV, rants in front of both parliaments and at the ballot box. I like fireworks but leave that for New Year’s Eve. I love football, especially when the Hoops are playing stuff like Friday, but I’ll put up with dour nil nils in Dingwall if I need to.

Please stop the juvenile nonsense now.

Excellent. I was thinking about you and your ghirls. Preparing for Christmas is going to be tough for all of you. God rest Moira. I have prayed for her and for all of you very frequently.

The idea in the Larkin poem comes from St Paul, of course. There is much discussion if Larkin meant to convey that “these remain: faith, hope and love, the three of them; and the greatest of them is love” (I Corinthians 13.13), or to mock it. Larkin was a strange man, but I hope he meant it. Either way, it’s still true.

Sincere good wishes to you and your ghirls.

Thatcher only arrived on the scene in the late 70s.

Who should we blame for anti-social behaviour prior to that?

    Thatcher.

Just you stick to having a go at Celtic fans then run away when you err yourself.

  17. Apart from denying any involvement in the vandalism at Fir Park, have the GB actually condemned the vandalism?

Not suggesting they should or should not. Just asking.

  18. weebobbycollins on

Thomthetim…agree it’s not a Celtic problem, it is a reflection of society in general. Celtic_First says he blames Thatcher. I don’t know if that was tongue in cheek but it may not be too far from the truth…The corruption of FIFA, UEFA and the SFA is caused by greed and greed was and still is promoted by Thatcherism (see Boris Johnson).

  19. BRTH

Great post from earlier. One thing that did concern me was your admission of being a follower of Trotsky and, as such a believer in the perpetual revolution. I can see yet another schism appearing here on the ol’ CQN as the revolutionaries of old come out of the caves, with just the beginnings of seeing the light. Before that happens I shall have to declare my own position.

I am a Revolutionary from the Marxist-Leninist tradition.

Or at least I was until I dumped Marx and concentrated on Lenin.

As Capitalism careers towards monopoly, I have taken democratic centralism to its’ logical conclusion.

I have exiled the members, and taken on sole responsibility for the Revolution.

I am a one man Party.

I am a Party of one.

  20. Some Celtic supporters behaved badly last night

but the demonisation of our younger supporters

    is over the top.

How many of those being critical of our supporters

    were at the game ?

  21. Stairheedrammy on

Tom- is it in the GB’s remit to comment on the behaviour of others who attend football matches involving Celtic- or would some people on here see that as another reason to attack them?

  23. Dan Supporting Wee Oscar on

    Evening folks,

    BRTH,

Excellent post and spot on. Every so often you will see the emergence of hooligans trying to become part of the Celtic support. In the past they have always been hunted by the decent fans.

My old man tells me the story from I think it was the 60’s. At Parkhead there a controversial incident at an Old Firm game. Some idiot at the back of the terracing attempts to throw a bottle on the park, succeeding only in hitting a kid on the head who was standing at the front (at that time the young kids always stood at the front).

He tells me the idiot was kicked from the back of the terracing right down to the front and was glad to be arrested by the Police. I am not advocating violence, but the problem was instantly dealt with.

I think it was the early 80’s when the Casuals had started to emerge and attach themselves to teams all over the country. I was at an away match at Cappielow and these young casuals tried to attach themselves to the Celtic support. They were quickly encouraged to go elsewhere and we did not have the problem with casuals attaching themselves to our support as other teams had.

We have always routed out hooligans from our support and I hope the same thing happens now. And I agree with your sentiments, we all must send a clear message that what happened last night is unacceptable and will not be tolerated by us.

Some on here living in their own wee bubble.GB haters who see no other evils. The neds who did the damage last night are the supposed”Celtic Casuals”.An obnoxious element who attend every away match. How they get tickets is anyones guess. You can see them in Merchant City after home games, strutting around.Usually looking for trouble. Those on here who go to the away games will know who I mean.
