Echoes of great Celtic teams

1910

I thought it was the emerging influence of Nir Biton as a central midfield influence who transformed Celtic against Hearts on Sunday; he looked that good.  If anything, Celtic were better in his absence last night, more fluid, more incisive, against a better team.

It’s all about shape.  The correct shape gives players time on the ball when they need it, allows them to look industrious, not static, and makes them difficult to counteract.  The only two questions are: can we maintain it, and when was the last time a Celtic team controlled the ball like this?

Forget about trying to maintain this in Barcelona, that’s far too risky, but if we can play like this at Tynecastle and Fir Park we can do so anywhere else in Scotland.  Don’t think we’ve played like this since the Centenary Season.

It’s difficult to interpret the vandalism at Fir Park last night.  As Celtic fans we don’t have a point of reference for this stuff.  “Had enough.  Won’t be back at another away game”, was the verdict of a friend I spoke to, who has probably missed no more than 40 domestic away games in the last 40 years.  The proportion of Celtic fans who would never vandalise seats is well above 99%, but there’s a new and unwelcome phenomenon in British football and Celtic have the best views in the country.

Getting back to more familiar ground, The Kano Foundation asked me to pass on this message:

“The Kano Foundation World Cup 2014 Predictor

Friends,

2013 has been a world class year for The Kano Foundation. We’ve had our first ever bucket collection, held our 3rd annual dance, welcomed groups from across Scotland, England and Ireland, and last but by no means least we will welcome our 2000th child to Celtic Park. All this would not be possible without your unwavering support.

As we move towards the new year, The Kano Foundation are always keen to continue our work while bringing you the fans new and exciting ways to support us. The fabulous prizes on offer at our Golf Day in September are just one example.

To keep up this form, we are delighted to announce a very special competition ahead of the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

We will be running a predictor competition unlike many others. At first reading our two part predictor is very similar to others where you enter the scores and winners for the 72 games.

However, we are also offering an unbelievable bonus prize fund of £10,000 for anyone who can correctly predict the outcome of all 48 group games . Yes, that’s correct – £10,000 to be shared amongst all entrants who can correctly predict the general outcome (winner or draw) for the all the group games.

In order to run both competitions we are asking entrants to make a one-off donation of £10. From the funds raised 50% will go as a donation to TKF with the remaining 50% available for prizes.

With just 100 entrants, not only can we raise a £500 prize fund for the predictor, we can also take over 200 kids to a game at Celtic Park. A tidy reward for a just few minutes brain effort!

All you need to do to enter is register you interest by email at:

wcpredictor@thekanofoundation.com Please include TKFWCPred as the email/paypal subject and tell us your user/team name so we can verify your entry. If you’ve not got enough room, enter as much detail as you can and tell us what you’ve done so we help.

Then make your payment into The Kano Foundation bank account (30-13-01 00989961 through Paypal or by sms by texting KANO11 £10 to 70070 – remember to include your name/email address.

Visit our predictor webpage (coming soon) to find more details and follow your progress

Once again, we hope we can rely on your support to make this predictor a success for us in terms of fundraising and for potentially making one of you £10,000 richer!

Thank You

The Kano Foundation”

Congratulations to the Celtic fans who run and support The Kano Foundation, our community is rightly proud of the. Register your interest by emailing: wcpredictor@thekanofoundation.com.

My pals bhoy was at the game last night and spoke to him today, he was near to where some Ned’s were breaking seats, he had a word and about ten or eleven of them threatened him. Very disappointed.

You are correct, myself and my bhoy have noticed this element at a few away games we have been to.

Personally I thought we had good possession in the first half yesterday, but no penetration. The other 3 45s were quite good.

Eh the Celtic Soccer Crew are most definitely not responsible for any violence etc attributed to Celtic in the last 10 years. Certainly nothing that’s been in the media.

Thanks for the response. No response from the ones on here condemning the GB without proof, and without a clue about what really went on.Not one of them have stopped to think”Have the GB been guilty of this behaviour before”No.Just jump on their anti GB platform.

Celtic casuals?.Who?.Naw I dont believe that,it was the GB.

The MSM dont have far to look for allies. In my opinion Celtic must take some responsibility for this episode.Away tickets should be vetted a lot more. This mob are getting tickets to every away game. The people sitting in the directors box must see their behaviour.

    Respectfully I can not agree.

We have not always been so self policing, however your post demonstrates that maybe its time to get some perspective on last night.

The reason we are so disappointed in the behaviour of a minority ( Yes minority ) is because of the hard earned progress we have made e.g. :-

It was common place for youngsters to go to games with decorated Hardhats. Cans and bottles flying down the front was quite a frequent occurrence, often full of p***.

Gang-fights, particularly in the Jungle were common place with projectiles being thrown in all directions.

One poster earlier mentioned Mark Walters. We were rightly appalled at the verbal abuse our Paul Wilson got then we go and disgrace ourselves with throwing fruit at Mark Walters. If my memory serves me well, it was referenced that all the local Fruitshops around Parkhead had sold out.

Huge “cairry oots” were common place and some of the upcoming football apprentices helped clear tons of empties ( Yes literally Tons ).

Some arrest totals were in hundreds.

Casualty departments were sometimes struggling to cope.

No it was not all good,we have evolved so much is why we are so protective of our hard won reputation.

Yes last nights behaviour was disappointing but lets not go over the top or more importantly let others go over the top.

    HH, Always in Celtic.

Good point re away tickets. Was in the away ticket scheme for years and years was only been successful in the ballot TWICE!

Has been a bit easier the last couple of years to get tickets from office as demand has been a bit less but your point is very well made.

I suppose there are blocks of tickets going to sc’s etc?

Seat breakers and flare/smoke bomb throwers. Get them identified, get them banned, get them charged.

When I think of the young Bhoys who are dragged out of their beds and locked up in cells for singing songs while these other clowns get off scot free with tarnishing the good Celtic name, my blood boils.

  21. Greenpinata –

    Great points well made.

I remember in the 90s when the onus was on questionable songs and my brother and I would discuss how bad it was in the 60s and 70s when bottles and cans were regularly used as missiles on the terraces, and here we are being castigated for so-called offensive songs and chants.

The consensus was, if all they can condemn football fans for is singing then we have come a long way.

    A few broken seats? Pfft!

Don’t worry a Celtic fan near you will always keep you updated, no matter that they died (or something like that)

  23. BRTH a passionate and truthful post – to paraphrase:

    Not in my name!

You do not speak for me. You do not represent me. You are not a good advert for the club and the people I love and support as fellow supporters, and you do not represent the club or yourselves well with such behaviour.

In 1997 I worried where our Club was heading as we entered our Centenary Year – I took to letter writing and engaging those with similar concerns. Along with many others, we fought long and hard to save the Club in 1994. Why? Because it was the right thing to do – I wanted to see the Club, its history and all it had stood for, to remain unsullied. So – where are we today?

Since 1994 we have seen; share-ownership, a new stadium (and an ongoing regeneration on our doorstep), a very healthy season ticket base – we have won titles and trophies and took part in a magnificent run to a European Final culminating in the great ‘Seville’ gathering. And what have we, the Supporters, got in return these past 20 years?

Recognition and Plaudits from UEFA and FIFA – a welcome in cities that we have visited – friendships forged and respect earned – a ‘hooped’ shirt that’s become an International calling-card. Visiting Teams/ Players who are in awe of our Support and its atmosphere – admirably demonstrated 12 months ago during our 125th Anniversary clash with Barcelona.

I’ve seen plenty in my time following Celtic (been watching them for half the time we’ve been in existence) – have always defended them and praised them and never given them reason to be ashamed of my support. I expect no less from my fellow Celtic Supporters.

This alarming demonstration of wanton hooliganism, belligerence and lack of respect for my Club’s name (whoever the perpetrators are) has to be eradicated. What’s the answer? Maybe its time for us (the Support) to make a stand (as we’ve done in the past) and nip this in the bud, otherwise it will fester and we the Celtic Support will be the longterm losers.

Didn’t see much of the game at all last night – on a night out where it was on in the background.

Did see what seemed to be a lot more young fans with scarves up over their faces in the crowd at the start. Might be a bit of self preservation agains the Off. behav. act but my first reaction was that it wasn’t a good sign at all.
