Economic consequences and remarkable irony

845

Spanish football, like its economy in general, in mired in difficult financial times, which, apart from one or two well-funded clubs, has restricted the budgetary scope of a large number of teams.  I had hoped all summer to hear we were on the case but it wasn’t until the final day of the window that solid opportunities materialised.

Marseille-born Tunisian international Lassad Nouioui is a complete unknown to all of us but his profile, earned at Deportivo La Coruna, fits the bill.  He scored a handful of goals as Deportivo finished 18th and dropped out of La Liga in season 2010-11 but hit the heights last season as they secured promotion.  It would be practically impossible for Celtic to sign a striker with the equivalent profile in English football, despite the apparent gap in standards between La Liga and the English Premier.  I’m also delighted to hear Levante, who finished 6th in La Liga last season, were so keen to capture him.

There is also something I like about the port-town mentality the people of Marseille have.  It’s very Glaswegian.  Lassad should flourish here.

I’m not sure what Phil Mac Giolla Bhain’s reaction was when The Sun called asking for an interview about his new book, which details the mainstream media’s failure to report the demise of Rangers.  “Are you joking?” may have been appropriate.  I had no prior notice they were running an interview yesterday and couldn’t believe the promotion they gave to a book detailing the failure of their industry.

This was not without consequences, of course, and The Sun got themselves into an incredible mess, today trying their best to backpedal, which is pretty much what the theme of the book predicts (irony #1).  Meanwhile there is a book publisher in Glasgow who cannot believe his luck.  Thousands of unwitting critics and a leading newspaper have ensured  Mac Giolla Bhain, who would struggle for a platform without the anger of others, has a bestseller on his hands (irony #2).

Check out below another of Platini’s ‘ideas’. He is becoming as crazy as Sepp Blatter. All Platini cares about is garnering enough support to replace Blatter as FIFA president in 2015

Wembley in pole position to host Euro 2020 final as part of continent-wide tournament

    By SPORTSMAIL REPORTER

Wembley could host the Euro 2020 final as part of a radical plan to host the tournament across 12 different countries.

The ambitious blueprint is the idea of UEFA president Michel Platini and will be put to delegates in December ahead of a vote in January or February.

UEFA hope to create a ‘Finals Week’ with the semis and final played in one city.

And according to the Sunday Mirror, London is among the major contenders to land the honour.

Turkey had been favourite to host the event in 2020, but their bid has hit difficulties due to a desire to host the Olympic Games in Istanbul in the same year.

Scotland, Wales and the Republic of Ireland have also formally declared an interest in hosting Euro 2020.

Earlier this summer, Platini said: ‘This matter will be discussed very seriously. We will have a great debate about 2020 and discuss the pros and cons.

‘It’s an idea I feel really passionate about, it will be a lot easier from a financial perspective.

‘We are not going to wait until we know whether Turkey are going to get the Olympics.

‘It creates a problem for us. We do have other candidates. Everyone has the possibility to host it.

‘It is easier to go from London to Paris or Berlin than Cardiff to Gdansk. It would be four games per venue. It is a great debate.’

lionroars67, I’ve just come home from work to two letters telling me that my seats are being used for “UEFA partners”.

The same thing happened for the helsingborgs game and I called and was relocated seats further back in the section. The day after I’d moved seats I got another letter telling me my seats were no longer required by UEFA and I could relocate back there. I said I would and the ticket line dude told me I had to call another number to relocate back to my own seats. He also informed me I would be charged the £3 booking fee again for the privelage of relocating back to my own seats. WTF?

I told him to shove it.

    I’m in 402 row E.

Just back from spending a week in Budapest.Fantastic city.

Other poster (Jim) recommends the Caledonia and I would also thoroughly recommend it.Patrick, the owner, posts on here and is an all-round good guy.He will definitely have the game on.

I tried to check out Champs bar as well, but it was a public holiday and was closed so can’t say anything about it.

    Taxi from airport around £20.

If you go to the Caledonia, they do good grub as well.

If you are into Indian food, there is a cracking curry shop around the corner.

If you like Italian food, there is a great wee restaurant right across the street.

If you are there for a few days,I would recommend buying a travel ticket (I got one for 72 hours) It allows travel on all public transport (buses, trams, trains) and was great value…around £10…get them at the main stations.

    Hope this helps

We are at home to Sporting on thursday, can’t see it anywhere, any idea if it’s broadcast at all.

Shocking that we are not on that list btw.

  16. A Ceiler Gonof Rust on

AKBW1888, I dont mind the being relocated part. The letter states that “We will try to seat you as near to your regular season seat as possible, subject to availability”. I’m ok with that.

What annoyed me was the money I was expected to pay to move back when they decided they didn’t want my seat after all. Plus ten minutes on the blower at probably a quid a minute.

Then again, I’d sit on the roof in the pashin rain if I thought it would guarantee a result against Barca.

I think that there is a joint prize on the go.

The SFA and the Print media ludges are running a competition full of guile, sleekitness and general wind-uppery.

Who can diss the club and big up the TFOD2 with the most obscure headlines, slanted reporting and Sly digs. It is a points scoring system so volume trumps quality.

They have no shame so be prepared.

My only question is at what stage will the whole enterprise be criticised by Civic Scotland?

I fear we may have a long wait.

  20. Evening, Some friends I know want to go to Benfica away, only problem is that only two of then are season ticket holders and they can’t book through Thomas Cook as they would all need to be book holders. Is there any other companies that he can book tickets and flights through.
