Economic consequences and remarkable irony

845

Spanish football, like its economy in general, in mired in difficult financial times, which, apart from one or two well-funded clubs, has restricted the budgetary scope of a large number of teams.  I had hoped all summer to hear we were on the case but it wasn’t until the final day of the window that solid opportunities materialised.

Marseille-born Tunisian international Lassad Nouioui is a complete unknown to all of us but his profile, earned at Deportivo La Coruna, fits the bill.  He scored a handful of goals as Deportivo finished 18th and dropped out of La Liga in season 2010-11 but hit the heights last season as they secured promotion.  It would be practically impossible for Celtic to sign a striker with the equivalent profile in English football, despite the apparent gap in standards between La Liga and the English Premier.  I’m also delighted to hear Levante, who finished 6th in La Liga last season, were so keen to capture him.

There is also something I like about the port-town mentality the people of Marseille have.  It’s very Glaswegian.  Lassad should flourish here.

I’m not sure what Phil Mac Giolla Bhain’s reaction was when The Sun called asking for an interview about his new book, which details the mainstream media’s failure to report the demise of Rangers.  “Are you joking?” may have been appropriate.  I had no prior notice they were running an interview yesterday and couldn’t believe the promotion they gave to a book detailing the failure of their industry.

This was not without consequences, of course, and The Sun got themselves into an incredible mess, today trying their best to backpedal, which is pretty much what the theme of the book predicts (irony #1).  Meanwhile there is a book publisher in Glasgow who cannot believe his luck.  Thousands of unwitting critics and a leading newspaper have ensured  Mac Giolla Bhain, who would struggle for a platform without the anger of others, has a bestseller on his hands (irony #2).

  1. Charles K, watching BB 5,08 when I get home from work! Outstanding show.

  2. Phoned up this afternoon to book my three game Champions League package and was told I couldn’t have my usual seat in 103 despite the fact that my mate, who sits two along from me, got his usual seat without any hassle. He is on the home ticket cup scheme and I’m not, so it looks like they differentiate on that basis.

Ironically, I was offered (and accepted) a seat in 105 which is closer to the halfway line and which will give me an even better view of the games.

  5. Well, now.

I have just read this edition of the Roy Greenslade blog on the Guardian website. here is the link:

    http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/greenslade/2012/sep/03/sun-scotland?CMP=twt_gu

It seems the real reason for pulling Phil MacGiollabhain’s article was all to do with the Sun’s fears of another “Hillsborough” article boycott. The Sun’s Scottish editor has erred considerably in deciding to publish extracts from the book when it was recommended by Alex Thomson and Roy Greenslade, neither of who are part of the succulent lamb brigade.

Oh, and who was it who recommended to the publisher that Phil Mac should write the book?

That’s right. it was a Sun journalist.

  6. ‘Sources’ in the Spanish press are reporting that C Ronaldo has asked for a transfer!

Jim Traynor said today in his opinion

Someone probably Ally is going to combust with rage before this is over and Doncaster should be aware that unless there is a change in approach the division between Rangers and the SPL could widen to a chasm which even Brunel couldn’t span.

  8. Would confirm for those who are interested that Breaking Bad is fantastic. I’m near the end of Season 2 and can’t get enough of it. It’s up there with the Sopranos and Homicide: Life on the Street.

  10. Hi guys,

A poster the other day thanked a CQN-er for recommending a TV series recently. Can anyone remember what series it was?

    Cheers

  11. Breaking Bad seasons 1-4 all available on Netflix. If you haven’t previously signed up you will get at least one month free otherwise about £6 a month. Just started season 4 myself. Definitely up there with the Sopranos. Can’t for the life of me understand why it hasn’t been properly picked up by UK channels.

It has been a contentious issue since we’ve been involved in the CL.

There is nothing the club can do about it.

    =========

    Yes, there is.

The club can make better arrangements.

People are moved then discover that another ST holder is moved into their seat!

There is someone near me who has not been able to have ‘own’ seat for more than a decade.

Add to that the way in which some counter/phone staff talk to a guy who has been attending Celtic games for more than 50 years !

The customer comes second far too often.

Off topic,,,but does anyone else think that Di Canio is bang out of order for what he said about his young Keeper!!!

Di Canio’s problem is he wants to be the centre of attention all the time,,,dont have any time for the little racist!!!
