Edouard pushed out Celtic transfer record

911

Celtic have activated a clause in their loan deal for Odsonne Edouard (20) with Paris Saint-Germain to sign the player on a four-year permanent contract.  The deal will cost the club an initial £4.5m but the add-ons which follow will soon make the deal the club’s highest transfer fee paid.

To give some perspective, Celtic last broke their transfer fee record with the £6m purchase of Neil Lennon in 2000.

Watching Odsonne develop during his loan period has been an education.  Brendan Rodgers put Moussa Dembele and Leigh Griffiths on the bench to allow Odsonne the game time he needed to grow.  His early-season rustiness was history by March, when he came off the bench when Celtic were down to 10 men at Ibrox, brushed aside what defences there was, to score a memorable winner.

The last player to match our record transfer fee was John Hartson in 2001.  Like John then, Odsonne is third choice striker, so the work does not stop here.

Great business, well done all concerned.

The price you mention is more like the one many of us believed to be the case.

The MSM must have been aware of it too, makes you wonder why they persisted with their £9m dross.

Btw,congrats to Peter Lawwell for another fine bit of business. I’m quick with the criticism,so there’s a hat-trick of Gallic congrats for him.

I wouldn’t like to play poker or spoof with him!!!

IMO,Moussa always intended leaving this summer, especially after his outstanding first season.

But even that was blighted by injury. And last season has given him it all to prove again-his quality AND his fitness.

He’s only 21yo. A new four year contract on improved terms, two years playing with his pals, showing everyone what he can do.

Offski with our blessing at 23. Except he decides he wants to be part of the ten…

Good piece of business. Think he will be with us for a few seasons, and then make us a very tidy profit when he moves on.

I hope that, next season, we will see more games where we play two up front … any combination of EO, MD and LG should score goals for fun in the SPL … and , with a bit better, quicker (speed is key) support play, score goals in the CL as well.

  5. Great news about French Eddy!

Only needs another 89 goals to join the elite 100 competitive goals for Celtic club.

“There’s a buzz about the place!”

    HH!!

Excuse me but it’s OE, not EO!

    :-)

Hope you and Seamus are well.

    Ciao!

    HH!!

  8. Just reading on CQN there,Peter Lawells , comments, regarding French Eddy,I got the feeling there won’t be anymore transfer business being done in this Window, Disappointed, but not surprised.

Whit? Based on these comments from the website? Are you Neganon2’s brother?

Celtic Chief Executive, Peter Lawwell, said: “The signing of Odsonne from Paris Saint-Germain demonstrates our absolute commitment to ensuring we give our fans a club they can be proud of.

“After the club delivered unprecedented, historic success last year, we thank our fans sincerely for the magnificent support they have already shown to the club as we look ahead to the coming season. As ever, we will do all we can to bring our fans the success which this support deserves. We are delighted to welcome Odsonne to Celtic and we know our fans will give him their usual magnificent support.”

    James…

fortunately for Celtic, I have played all of those positions, so, if they get me signed quickly, they would be saving themselves a fortune (basically three players for the price of one!)

wont even try to claim the usual fat fingers defence …. just old age … I dont know why, but for some reason, I have taken to calling him Edouard Odsonne, instead of the other way round …. getting old sucks!

    :)

Given that they had a relatively easy group stage, I had thought of Uruguay as a decent outside pick, along with Cavani as a possible top scorer … not on this showing!

I’m home for a few weeks, and was discussing the subject with my ST-holding Celtic-daft sisters.

    We would have liked a back-up RB,and a back-up LB. Solid unspectacular pros,no more.

Apart from that,I think we are pretty much ok. We don’t even need to replace SA if he’s mad enough to leave

I might get kicked out The Offishul Mineshafters Club for two of my posts this afternoon, but that’s how I honestly see it.

Pruning the squad is the new team-building!!!

The clause wasn’t cast in stone. Has Edouard not been happy with our offer,he could simply have refused to sign

Indeed,PSG could conceivably offered him an inducement to do so,say a large cut of the larger fee from other hovering clubs.

    So,aye. It’s a new signing.

Cavani having no luck today …. goalkeepers makes a great!!! save to his left to push away a beautifully hit volley by Cavani … then Cavani hits a lovely free kick, only to see it crash off the bar and away

… but his defender shows him how to do it, and crashes in a terrific unstoppable header from a free kick with only minutes remaining!

  15. Poor performance from Uruguay, worst I’ve ever seen Suarez, but they win. That’s how the teams who are there at the end of the tournament start.

“Good…spending just about all of their transfer budget on a player already there..Celtic were no more than the best of a bad bunch last season and can’t see any great improvement coming now..#55”
