Error in positions. Racism in spate

463

Just as a year ago, we lost the first game of the season against Newco, but the similarities end with the result.  Celtic bossed the first half and created the better chances in an even second period.  Goals change games and when Kyogo Furuhashi centred a cross for Odsonne Edouard, the game should have changed.  Instead, Odsonne took his eye off the ball, which bounced off his heel and ran to safety.

One week ago today, despite scoring six against St Mirren, I urged Ange Postecoglou to play Kyogo through the middle, if necessary moving Odsonne to the left.  He started Kyogo on the left yesterday and although Celtic enjoyed the bulk of possession, they were blunt in front of goal; Odsonne’s miss starkly demonstrating the point.  It was a foreseeable error from Ange, which he later accepted.

Although Newco were unable to keep possession throughout the first half, at home, exclusively in front of their own fans, news of their demise was exaggerated.  They survived the torrent when required and adjusted their game plan at halftime.  From that point, Celtic were no more than equal in the contest until Kyogo moved into the middle on 70 minutes.

After Kygo shot from a tight angle, Ryan Christie reacted animatedly towards his teammate, presumably complaining that the Japanese striker did not square the ball for him to finish in front of goal.

I’m never keen on Celtic players shouting at each other and suspect this show of agitation contributed to Kyogo passing instead of shooting moments later, when the clear shot at goal was on.  Our Imperious Icon could be forgiven for wondering why bother laying chances on a plate for others after Edouard’s earlier miss.

Just like the first goal we lost to Newco last season, yesterday’s goal was lost from a set piece but I’m not pressing the panic button on this one.  Last year we were unable to form a straight defensive line, it was largely the central defenders who were causing the problems.  The defenders were correctly marshalled yesterday, the goal was lost because none of the others picked up a late runner.

The transformation in Celtic in such a short period has been beyond any of our expectations.  We will continue to improve and I expect will top the table after Newco’s visit on 2 January.  In losing twice so early, however, we have put ourselves under unwelcome pressure.  Playing the beautiful stuff is not always rewarded.

Last week they came after the Japanese, yesterday, they came after the Irish.  Racism in Scotland is in spate, it was even given a police escort post-match in Glasgow yesterday.  It is not the responsibility of Celtic to win so often that the mob have no opportunity to wreak havoc on the city.

Our political leaders and police cannot ignore this problem away.  Scotland is home to many cultures, creeds and ethnicities.  All will suffer unless the laws of the land are enforced.

  1. I don’t know the details behind the economics of the game or at our Club, but we do now need to see strength on the pitch…………not just nearly there, really there.

Our competitive advantage in terms of financial clout needs to hit home.

    The product needs investment.

  2. Ryan gets to hang out with his old mate Stuarty dahn the saff coast and ease himself into the English game where, if he has a good Championship season, he can negotiate an upgrade to a middling EPL side the season after. Eddy gets to help Palace avoid relegation on 80k a week. Next, where’s Barki and Albi heading to ?

How’s our marketing efforts going to disperse Dane, Leigh, Boli, Bitti, Nir and Tich (geddit??)

  3. a pathetic football celtic fc, no ambition no gumption peoplethink we are gonna sign players thatwe need ha forget it i have no faith anymore i am sick of theclub know goodbye.

  4. I am still angry after about 30 minutes, having listened to the BBC Scotland announcer’s interview with the Director of Nil by Mouth about THAT march. She did her best (presumably at the behest of the producer) to spread the guilt to every team’s supporters at every match and then suggested there be a Government enquiry into the clubS and what they’re doing about sectarianism. She also poured cold water on the idea of all of those marching being charged.

She simply ignored the fact that it was a MARCH through the city centre. What would the BBC have said if it was an anti-Muslim or Jewish march? Anti-Catholic, anti-Irish….that’s part of the cultjur. Awful.

  5. Morning , are the deals done for Eddy and Christie? How much will we receive, any rumours on in coming? HH

  6. Shortie – as national broadcaster is leading the charge in terms of message management and leading how this issue is framed.

I noted that The Indo ( here in Ireland) reported THAT march as “an anti-Irish” march……………..

  7. Asset management / the legacy of PL — not looking good this morning.

Things today would be much different if PL had worked to the big picture rather than try to embarrass NL out of a job so that we didn’t have to pay out NL’s notice period / bonus structure.

Saved £1mill — at most — 12 months ago and now we are giving away players to the ECh.

    Not good.

  8. AP interview from SLY — powerful stuff hopefully helping us understand who we are and what we came from.

It also makes the self indulgent / ego tripping of the Irish Raj and PL all the more galling to witness.

DD would appear to be from the well fed end of the 26 county spectrum.

No connection / links to the marginal end of the spectrum who have had to move for a better future over the past 150 or even 200 years — it would explain his lack of engagement to a T.

  9. If the Greek fella plays as an out-and-out striker and Ange wants Kyogo through the middle, does this mean he’ll switch to two upfront?

Really don’t want to see Kyogo shunted out wide.

  10. Good morning – Grand Day To Be A Celt!!

Much of the racism this speaks off manifests around football.

A significant proportion of Rangers supporters hold and express such views.

Celtic football club is open to all but a significant proportion of the support has Irish & /or Catholic heritage.

Celtic had the chance to cut off the head of this snake both on and off the field.

In fact Celtic had a preeminent responsibility and a moral duty to ensure that was done.

If Celtic can ignore this issue then we supporters should not be belly aching about political leaders and law enforcement.

Celtic threw away sporting superiority and failed in sporting governance. Asking others to fight for us when we won’t fight for ourselves or our own is very poor.

    Hail Hail

  11. Might see a nibble for Carter Vickers,Spurs CH,today,on loan.

God,some deadbeats on here this morning.Away to the pool.

  12. Upset about the RS report on the anti-Irish march — then complain to London and highlight the partial analysis and the selective viewpoints allowed a voice.

  13. Scotland and its hierarchy of racism …

Anti Japanese = statements / publicity / arrests.

Anti Irish = excuses / silence / slanted media.

I said similar last night – S Stivs asking where club had failed to live up to 5-year plan.

The notion of the 5-year plan is flawed to begin with – it is based on OF ‘arms race’ thinking.

The head should have been cut off the Hun serpent in 2011 but we managed to throw the title that year and have failed to press home the advantage ever since.

  15. I’ll be glad to see the back of Edouard and Christie.

They were well paid for the lack of effort and interest they put in recently.

Can’t help wondering if the they were a divisive influence in the dressing room with there wantaway attitude.

No thanks from me, just goodbye.

Carter-Vickers, Ali McCann and the two we expect to sign today and I’d consider this a very good window…..

Goodbye danso1888…don’t know how we’ll survive without you. Careful with your bum on the way out the cat flap.

  18. Now that the revenue side of the transfer window has been sorted.

Everything now down to the expense side of the equation.

Hopefully DMcK will engage with the concept of “surprise and delight”.

We have a lot of talent in the squad but we have gaps that need filled.

Consequently get yer erse into gear.

The B team idea seems to be working so we need to improve that squad as well.

Interesting to see what happens to BL — project who has passed the B team exam with flying colours.

What next for him — 4 month loan in the SPL / SCh?

Or into the 1st team squad?

    From the wee wee hours.

Calum Mac is a very fine footballer, has been for many a year. Showed well against England’s talented midfield at Wembley just a couple months ago, and has maintained his focus and fitness when and where others lost their way. Missed Kyogo’s through centre run in the first half Sunday though. Needs to be part of a balanced midfield as well, and we did not see that in the last two games, both of which we lost. Pity that Oliver Nchaim never developed into the player we once hoped for and he once, under Brendan, threatened to be. With the build of a boxer, he could like Calmac, protect the ball, and play the slide rule pass. Tant Pis.

Hope all is well. In Ange we trust.

  20. Eddie and Christie have my best wishes. We’ve lost two key squad members and unfortunately look set to have a weaker squad when the window closes.

Two out and two in was a lot less than what I was hoping to see today. An optimist could claim we’re keeping money for the January window but I think we lack depth and with two games a week until January alongside two international breaks, it’s fairly clear we haven’t got enough to cope until January.

    Get the finger out Dominic.

The 2010/11 SPL title race — the use of “throwing” as a description of our attempts to win the league …

The weekend bevvy session before the ICT mid-week game — interesting.

From memory the TFOD1.3 had dropped two unexpected points the week before which then put us into pole position and then the “shaved ape” shambles happened.

  22. If we sign nobody today I’ll still be a Celtic supporter, the blood is strong.

The CELTIC SONG will never leave!…🤗

  24. Fit, focused and on-form versions of French Eddie and Ryan Christie would be a major loss to any Celtic squad.

Sadly neither player has been able to tick many of these boxes consistently for at least a year.

So parting is best for all parties.

If the new Greek striker has done presence about him, I’d love to see him play in close tandem with our Japanese Bhoy, a la Larsson/Sutton or, more recently Griffiths and Edouard.

Bigoted Broadcasting Corporation, Sly Sports, Radio Snide and Scottish Tunnel Vision are all racism deniers by editorial decision.

    Why?

    Simples.

    Keep it “sectarian”

And make it about both sides.

Thus they can safely equivocate …

Racism deniers, holocaust deniers. Cut from the same cloth.
