Expect the manager and team to both be ready

525

It is time for our seasonal reminder: the first competitive fixture of a new season is statistically more akin to a lottery than a predictable event; in evidence, we have Lincoln Red Imps and Artmedia Bratislav, two teams who won as significant underdogs against Celtic.

Season 2019-20 starts tonight in a field in Bosnia, where local champions, Sarajevo, attempt to record what would be one of the most significant victories in their history.

Neil Lennon has some decisions to make, particularly in defence, where Christopher Jullien and Boli Mbombo could make their debuts, the latter in the absence of Kieran Tierney, who is still recovering from an operation in May.

The heat has relented in Sarajevo and across Europe from the heights recorded last week, so it will be more like a balmy Glasgow evening than an oven for the Celtic players.  Importantly, Neil Lennon has been through a few experiences like this.  He will remember the pain of defeats European competition at the hands of Utrecht (4-0) and Braga (3-0) in his first season in charge of Celtic.

Expect the manager and the team to both be ready this time.

One year on from being assaulted as a Loyal Order Boyne march passed St Alphonsus Church in London Rd, and having asked for a “new normal” whereby the minority Catholic Community are not subjected to this type of bigotry and hatred outside their places of worship, I am saddened that the “new normal” seems to be nowhere near being achieved.

The Boyne match on Saturday 6th July 2019 was rerouted by the Loyal Orders but they still insisted on passing a Catholic Church, Blessed John Dun Scotus on Ballater St in the Gorbals. Despite meeting with the clergy from Blessed John Dun Scotus and giving assurance that the Church would be absolutely respected we witnessed yet another Church targeted by mob mentality with complete disregard for the conditions imposed upon their march by Police Scotland and Glasgow City Council. Bands ignored the condition of not playing music within 100 metres of the church with one band, Bridgeton No Surrender, actually stopping very close to the Church and continuously playing despite Police Scotland requesting that they stop. This was accompanied by their followers singing and dancing on the pavement in a mob like fashion.

Earlier in the day a young woman was physically assaulted by two band members from the Drumchapel Protestant Boys, with one actually spitting on her.

I feel it is now time to hold to account those in public office: the Scottish Government, Police Scotland and Glasgow City Council for failing in their statutory duties. There is a systemic failure at national and local level in ensuring the safety of all citizens, and particularly the minority Catholic group, during the Loyal Order marching season. They seem to be blind to this despite incontrovertible evidence of the anti-Catholic bigotry on show when Glasgow City Centre is paralysed to allow 8000 members of the Loyal Orders and their followers to march through our streets and take over one of our dear green places to display a level of animosity to a particular minority group. This would certainly not be allowed if it targeted other minority communities such as Muslims, Jews, Sikhs, Hindus, Gypsy, Roma & Travellers or the LGBTQ+ communities and this is entirely appropriate. I am demanding no more than equality for the minority Catholic community.

The increased usage of social media on such a wide scale, alongside the hours of footage recorded on CCTV and by Police Scotland during Saturday’s marches means that the evidence of this inequality is freely available.

It is time for the government (national and local) and Police Scotland to act to eradicate this. The minority Catholic Community should not need to rely on a court judgement, as happened on 31st May 2019, for Sheriff Reid to rule that Glasgow City Council used their powers appropriately and proportionately to prevent such marches passing Catholic places of worship.

I call on politicians at all levels and from all political parties to work with Police Scotland and the judicial system to bring about change, as is their statutory duty, that ensures the safety of the Catholic community and all other citizens and visitors to Glasgow to go about their lawful business, including such fundamental freedoms as worshiping without fear and intimidation, or to simply cross from one side of the street to another in Glasgow City Centre!

  14. That’s some statement BSR……it’s going to be like the North over here (some may think it is already) if the folks in power don’t get this sorted and soon. Witnessed this type of intimidation at St Columbkilles many times but am now an EK based nomad for mass and thankfully don’t see them do this any more, though my younger brother tells me he still sees and hears it at vigil mass at St Columbkilles.

  15. Hi Bhoys

I take it most of you bhoys have either heard about or seen the footage of the girl being pushed and spat upon by a memeber of the o.o. on Saturday.

As the o.o. claim to be a charity does anyone know how you can make a complaint to The Charity Commission regarding the behaviour of a charity memeber. If anyone knows anything could you please post it. If it gets posted could all of you fine cqners register a complaint with The Charity Commission. It may help to speed up their demise.

Why doesn’t it surprise me that the OO defies police instructions and conditions of their march?

There is only one solution. A complete ban.

  21. is that a 4-2-3-1 with Ajer at RB and Bitton at CH?

if it’s 3 at the back, the midfield is too crowded unless Johnston or Forrest play up front with Eddie.

Bigots, dinosaurs and Neanderthals are basically allowed to practice bigoriy in our streets under the eyes of our police force and elected representatives.

Just as well they have a commanding lead at the top of the ‘close season league’ and are already through to the final of all the ‘close season cups’.
