Expect the manager and team to both be ready

It is time for our seasonal reminder: the first competitive fixture of a new season is statistically more akin to a lottery than a predictable event; in evidence, we have Lincoln Red Imps and Artmedia Bratislav, two teams who won as significant underdogs against Celtic.

Season 2019-20 starts tonight in a field in Bosnia, where local champions, Sarajevo, attempt to record what would be one of the most significant victories in their history.

Neil Lennon has some decisions to make, particularly in defence, where Christopher Jullien and Boli Mbombo could make their debuts, the latter in the absence of Kieran Tierney, who is still recovering from an operation in May.

The heat has relented in Sarajevo and across Europe from the heights recorded last week, so it will be more like a balmy Glasgow evening than an oven for the Celtic players.  Importantly, Neil Lennon has been through a few experiences like this.  He will remember the pain of defeats European competition at the hands of Utrecht (4-0) and Braga (3-0) in his first season in charge of Celtic.

Expect the manager and the team to both be ready this time.

Based purely on my own observations, Ralston seems to suffer from lack of stamina, and/or recovery issues. At times pushing forward, he looks quite pacy, but if he loses the ball in a forward position, he just can not get back into a defensive position at even a light jog. If he is dispossessed, he can not catch a player who is walking away from him with the ball.

It is quite a handicap for a modern full back.

After deciding that Sevco`s Europa League Qualifier is more worthy of top story staus than is Celtic`s Champions League Qualifier, the BBC then goes on to say:

” Sarajevo have ambitions to make this first qualifying round tie as awkward as it appears on paper even if they are big underdogs.”

Question: If they are `big underdogs`,why would any `paper` make this seem an `awkward` tie? Hmm…

    …………..

Next question: So Sarajevo will try very hard to win this game or at least draw – how come we didn’t realize this until he told us? Thank goodness for the Scottish sports medai explaining all that to us…

Next again question: Are Sarajevo unlike any other team in Europe who see themselves as underdogs, say, like a team from a minor league such as Gibraltar?

Peppo`s is Takeaway only. If you want to sit down, The Golden Haddock — on the HIgh St near the sea– has that facility.

I intend going to The Arbroath Emerald AGM on Sunday but, if the timing is right for me getting back and you would prefer Peppo`s, you are welcome to come round to my flat and have a cup of tea with your fish suppers . Paul67 will give enable us to make contact.

As the forecast for Sunday is fine, sitting by the Harbour is probably the best idea anyway. What time do you plan being there ? If possible, I will nip over and see you: Grandfather, Grandmother, Grandson and dog. Should be east to spot :-)

Without wishing to upset our West of Scotland fish eating aficionados, surely the guid yins will hit the chippies in Anstruther and Pittenweem before the lorry to Glasgow?

As usual feeling nervous about an away in Europe tie. With the same players as last season can’t see how Neil will have had time to put his style to the forefront.

*don’t think the players were the problem.

I’ve been to the chippie in Anstruther many times over the years and there was alway a queue about 50 yards long and a bit of a wait to get your fish and chips, but it was worth it, the best F/S you will ever taste .

  13. Need help here… I have changed my email address but CQN still have my old one. It works obviously

BUT how do I switch the old for the new. Thanks in advance

Indeed no contest, and its really the Scottish Italians that keep up the West.

I went to the chippy that Oldtim mentioned last time I was home and the batter on the fish is what made it so memorable, I only went there to try ” the other place” as the wee chippy is indeed an excellent choice. Next time I’m going to the one in the middle. I’ll submit my findings. 😁

Certainly wasn’t having a go at the players, more the system that has been drilled into them. Neil will need time to get his message over. However if the leaked team news is correct and the new guys are in I don’t think we’ll see much faffing around at the back.

    Still nervous though

  20. It is somewhat disappointing to miss out on several targets, no complaints though as the club is trying to sign some decent players.

Many thanks for the good wishes re wee Georgia can’t wait to take her to Celtic Park.

On a side note my Dad always told me it was Celtic Park, Parkhead is an area, I note the younger brigade tend to call it Parkheed or Paradise (I like that)
