Expensive lesson for football

669

The success rate of Celtic’s player recruitment strategy in recent years has been exceptional; pound-for–pound better than any period in our history.  Forster, Mulgrew, Lustig, Matthews, Izaguirre, Wilson, Ledley, Wanyama, Commons, Kayal and Hooper have arrived for limited outlay and have propelled the club into the latter stages of the Champions League.

By contrast, Mo Bangura failed to impress on any occasion tested.  At another time it would be easy to write him off but it seems unusual that the current system for scouting and assessing footballers has led to a striker who only yesterday recorded his first goal for the club.

In all honesty I suspect Mo will not get a chance to turn things around at Celtic, there are several strikers ahead of him in the squad and our scouts will forever be working on fresh recruits, but this doesn’t mean he is a bad player.  It’s more likely that his induction into Scottish life missed a crucial step.

Did you see the story and photograph about Michael Johnson yesterday?  The 24-year-old was paid-off by Manchester City near the end of his £40k per week contract.  He was unfortunate with injuries but there is a lesson for football to learn in his demise.

The day anyone, young or old, clever or stupid, signs a £10m contract life can become one long party.  ‘You don’t like my attitude/weight/blood test/friends?  I’m on a multi-million pound contract, deal with it.’ How can football deal with this issue?

For the record, there is absolutely no connection between Mo, whose attitude has been first class, and Michael Johnson’s demise.

Yes he certainly got stuck in to them. And very similar opinions posted on non Celtic sites on a frequent basis. I know a lot of folks are fed up hearing about Newco and I sympathize with that view at times. But I think the lie of the history being maintained must be challenged at every opportunity. If it’s not then the lie becomes accepted.

  6. Andy Melvin retiring from Sky Sports this year..maybe someone with no sevco loyalties will take over

  7. Sky Sports’ deputy managing director Andy Melvin is to retire in 2013 after 22 years at the pay-TV operator.

Melvin will step down at the end of the current football season, but will continue as a part-time consultant at Sky in the future.

His departure will pave the way for a minor restructure as he will not be replaced directly.

Instead, head of football directors Steve Smith will be promotes to director of production from 1 June.

Sky is also set to create the new roles of executive producer of football, with an appointment due to be made in the New Year.

Tony Mills will replace Smith as the head of football directors and will be tasked with developing a pipeline of new directing talent across all of Sky’s live football.

“Andy has been a driving force behind Sky Sports ever since launch,” said Barney Francis, managing director of Sky Sports.

“He has made an enormous contribution in helping Sky Sports become one of the world’s leading sports broadcasters. At the same time, I’m delighted that Steve Smith has agreed to become our new director of production. It shows the strength and depth of our in-house talent pool that we’re able to so regularly promote great people from within.”

Yep me too. After the now liquidated clubs fans, I loathe that mob’s fans. Goes back to the experience of being among them when we had the chance to clinch the title back in the centenary year. Could not get a ticket in the Celtic end of the ground and through family got tickets at their end.

Behind their goal, not in the old enclosure where the “real nutters” went at that time. The vile that spewed from them on that day was disgusting, and that’s taking in to account they beat us that day 2 to 1. I know it was years ago, but the events on the day when Lenny was attacked seems to suggest they have not changed much.

Keep challenging it mate, I certainly will be.

I am not sympathetic to those who state that it has now become tedious.

Ah, it now becomes clear why Sky promote SevCo so heavily

The outgoing Deputy Managing Director is a Sevconian

With him being punted, all we need now is Whyte + Spanner to go
