Exploiting a vulnerable man, the drive to Bristol Airport, WW in the UK

611

There is a degree of public interest in reading about, or listening to, spivs exploit the stupidity of some football fans to bring a club to its knees, but the sight of a tired and emotional looking Malcolm Murray stumbling away from an event is neither entertaining nor of interest to anyone with a sense of humanity.

Have you ever seen a drunk football player or official?  I have.  It has never been news before nor should it be now.  If the man has an actual problem the first response from his club and the wider game must be to offer support for one of our national illnesses.

The fan with a phone camera probably knows no better, but passing-round a recording of when a Frankie Howerd impersonator confronted Murray about his alleged problem is truly awful.

The audio was almost certainly not uploaded onto the internet by ‘Howerd’ but it was his decision to make and distribute the recording.  I hope he informed Murray the call was being recorded.

10 years ago today five of us filled a car and drove to Bristol Airport, the nearest available departure point for Scot’s leaving for the Spain; more-local airports were booked out within minutes of the event ahead being confirmed.  Bristol is a small airport but the place was full of other Celtic fans who had travelled south for the same purpose.  Every departure point in the land was filled by green and white.

A remarkable exodus was underway, it was a privilege to be part of it.

Great news, Willie Wallace has made the long trip from Aus and is now in the UK.  Looking forward to catching up with him next week.

I see contributing to Willie’s autobiography has had a dramatic effect on Rod Stewart’s career!  He’s just reached No. 1 in the album chart for the first time in decades.  Hail, hail, Rod.

You can pre-order the autobiography in Willie’s own words, with Rod’s contribution, Brogan Rogan’s best writing yet, and Archie MacPherson’s fantastic scene setting (“the best team I’ve ever seen”) with the link below.  Willie will be signing all copies ordered now just as soon as the presses roll.

Nostalgia overload.  Need to hold it together for tomorrow.

Smashing read – one error though.

The Dixie flying header from the JJ effort off target was in the 74-5 LCF when we beat Hibs 6-3.

Hibs must really have hated playing us in finals, we beat them 6-2 in 68-9 LCF, 6-1 71-2 SCF and 6-3 in 74-5 LCF.

  4. Just a quick visit before Golf. Your post at 8.17 Cowiebhoy reminded me of a lad I had forgotten about. I think it was the year after Seville, against Barca in the Nou Campe the game I refer to as the David Marshall/John Kennedy game. In a square full of Celts met a lad with his entire back covered in a tattoo of Henrik’s face. Even got the lad to pose for a photo of it.

  10. Good morning, sunny here in G71. Reading the stories of Seville brings back lots of memories. Like others was too young and couldnt have afforded to go to the two previous finals, so Seville was a must go to. A 5 day trip with my oldest daughter, Glasgow to Malaga, then on to base in Benalmadena. On the day of the game the bus from our hotel joined the convoy north, parked in the bus park at stadium, walked back into the city, a sea of green and white, wow, heavenly!! Had 2 tickets purchased online from the Liverpool area for £900, face value 15E each, though later got £200 back. To have been there is the memory of a lifetime.

Help Pack paradise is upto us all, i had few friends who used to attend the odd derry game at brandywell..i was regular with another mate so everyweek i would be txting about 3mates to come along, bit of pressure i usually got least 1 to come along.

Keep at your mates who pick and choose games.

  12. tomcourtney 07.33- interesting stat that, if we say the oldco ave home attendance was 43000 and Dundee 7000, that is a net differential of -36,000 every 2 weeks or -18,000 per week.

-2110 per week is therefore vary far indeed from Armageddon

  14. ‘Scottish FA chief executive Stewart Regan has described alleged links between former Rangers chief executive Charles Green and Craig Whyte are a “very serious issue”.’

Yet what does he and his failed administration intend to do about it ? Pretty much nothing. Regan also told STV Sport

“The report is being done very much on an independent basis. The club have agreed to share the findings of that report with us so that we can get transparency on the questions that we asked.

“And until that comes out it’s probably wrong to speculate on what might or might not happen.”

So there you have it. Rather than investigate the club or it’s board members the SFA will wait until they receive a watered down and no doubt redacted report.

Once again those on the sixth floor seem determined to protect themselves by protecting Sevco. Just like they done with Rangers last year.

The joke is once again on us.

I still don’t see it quite that way. I mean, of course, I agree that the SFA needs to be cleansed and rebuilt from the ground up, but Regan doesn’t say they’re not going to do anything.

We know from his comments that the SFA has been asking questions of Sevco. We know that the SFA believes it will get some answers from the report. Regan says, “Until that comes out it’s probably wrong to speculate.”

I take the view that action will follow, but that they have agreed to look at this report first before deciding what action to take.

Say the report shows the links between Sevco and Craig Whyte, then surely to God someone will have the gumption to get Regan on the record and ask him what action the SFA intends to take.

Say the report says, in effect, “Nothing to see here, Timmy. Jog on.” Then, someone would need to get Regan on the record and have him explain to us how all the Charlotte documents and audio, whose veracity has been denied by no one, can be compatible with the findings of the report.

We have to wait for the report.

I agree with you…..think the SFA will have no altrnative other than to revoke their conditional membership, since as per Charlotte’s VERY TIMELY evidence, the report cannot be fudged. There was collusion between sdm, Whyte and and this breached th 5 way agreement ……. Very interesting, and revealing, days ahead ………!!!!!!!!

  25. As it’s the tenth anniversary of Seville here is my recollection.

When the ref blew his whistle to signal the end of the Boavista game – and we knew we were in the final – about twelve grown men whose ages ranged from mid-30s to late 40s, hugged and kissed each other and started doing the huddle in the middle of the floor in a Troon pub, knocking stools, chairs AND tables flying! At the time the pub was a Tim shop – less so now. BMCUW has been in a couple of times!

We all decided that we would go to Seville, but over the course of the next few days the numbers decreased to three – me and two others. Things like work and family commitments meant that most would stay at home.

My big mate started to make all the arrangements and booked a flight from Glasgow to Alicante, sorted out a hire car there and found a hotel in Seville. We handed over a deposit, and everything – except match tickets – was arranged in a couple of days.

At the time I was running the family business and, unfortunately, for a variety of reasons had to pull out at the last minute my place being taken by another ghuy – never got my deposit back!

I was gutted to put it mildly – but that’s life!

The build-up on the day of the match was incredible, and we had made arrangements to watch the game in the same pub which was bedecked in Celtic flags, beach balls and sombreros. The place was heavin’. Not quite the same as being in Seville of course, but better than nothing!

Huge disappointment on the night, but an amazing experience nonetheless.

At the end of the game we all trooped off to another pub in town where a VERY well-known local Tim – who hails from Kilwinning – had hired the premises for the evening from the owner who happened to be a hun! He had made him an offer he could not refuse!

The ‘celebrations’ continued into the early morning.

I had about three hours sleep, and at about 0830 went round to the business premises to ensure that everybody had turned up – they had, and I promptly went back home to bed to nurse a raging hangover!

Missed going to Seville, but I hope to get the chance to attend a European final in the near future.

Surely this is the major flaw of the Spivco Independent Traders oops sorry Report.

No matter what the outcome will it be made public for people to see the look at the evidence and findings.

Transparency is needed and that includes the Five Way Agreement. How can we judge if Spivco have breached this if it is still shrouded in mystery.

    Ah Seville………….

Went to every away game except the semi against . Bought tickets on line as soon as they became avail. Flew to London the day before the game, flew from there to Madrid. Sat outside Madrid station waiting for the rest of the clan to gather.

Fantastic train journey to Seville (well what I can remember of it anyway) spent the time in the “refreshment” area singing etc.

Taxi from Seville station to our hotel. We stayed in the same hotel as the BBC crew, big Billy, Jim Kerr etc….fantastic place.

Best memory was just outside the stadium where a tout stood with a wad of tickets waving them about when out of nowhere a wee boy ran out of the crowd, grabbed the tickets and melted into the crowd which mysteriously opened up swallowed him amongst howls of laughter.

Wonder who he was…..anybody else see that?

    Good times.
