Exploiting a vulnerable man, the drive to Bristol Airport, WW in the UK

611

There is a degree of public interest in reading about, or listening to, spivs exploit the stupidity of some football fans to bring a club to its knees, but the sight of a tired and emotional looking Malcolm Murray stumbling away from an event is neither entertaining nor of interest to anyone with a sense of humanity.

Have you ever seen a drunk football player or official?  I have.  It has never been news before nor should it be now.  If the man has an actual problem the first response from his club and the wider game must be to offer support for one of our national illnesses.

The fan with a phone camera probably knows no better, but passing-round a recording of when a Frankie Howerd impersonator confronted Murray about his alleged problem is truly awful.

The audio was almost certainly not uploaded onto the internet by ‘Howerd’ but it was his decision to make and distribute the recording.  I hope he informed Murray the call was being recorded.

10 years ago today five of us filled a car and drove to Bristol Airport, the nearest available departure point for Scot’s leaving for the Spain; more-local airports were booked out within minutes of the event ahead being confirmed.  Bristol is a small airport but the place was full of other Celtic fans who had travelled south for the same purpose.  Every departure point in the land was filled by green and white.

A remarkable exodus was underway, it was a privilege to be part of it.

Great news, Willie Wallace has made the long trip from Aus and is now in the UK.  Looking forward to catching up with him next week.

I see contributing to Willie’s autobiography has had a dramatic effect on Rod Stewart’s career!  He’s just reached No. 1 in the album chart for the first time in decades.  Hail, hail, Rod.

You can pre-order the autobiography in Willie’s own words, with Rod’s contribution, Brogan Rogan’s best writing yet, and Archie MacPherson’s fantastic scene setting (“the best team I’ve ever seen”) with the link below.  Willie will be signing all copies ordered now just as soon as the presses roll.

Nostalgia overload.  Need to hold it together for tomorrow.

I agree with your assessment of how fluid the front 3 have looked the last two games. I think it is down to Scott Brown.

I was a critic of his for a few years. Didn’t think his price tag was merited. He has matured the last couple of years though and he is vital to our team. Our captain drives the team forward.

    I would go with Samaras.

Seville memories. I am just a few miles south of Sevilla today and if only the weather then had been like it is today we may just have won it.

Anyway I have lots of fantastic memories of Seville ( as I have of Lisbon and, to a much lesser extent, Milan ). However, the morning after the game I came downstairs in my hotel and recognised a young man at reception checking out. He had previously worked for me in London. Turned out he had started a new life in Australia and was getting married in 6 weeks time. He flew from Australia to London. Flew to Madrid and took the fast train to Seville. He had no ticket but watched the game in the park. He simply said ” I had to be here “.

We will have our time again. No fear on that one.

there was an IDENTITY festival in greenock all last week, this is an excerpt taken from a poster.

Mrs mcgarry came from ireland and set up home in port glasgow.she had seven children, one of her daughters had sixteen children, mrs mcgarry ended up with seventy grandchildren and one hundred and twenty great grandchildren.this shows how one woman can have such an effect on the port glasgow population.

also says how the irish community were regularly attacked in the street.

all italian ice cream parlours were also attacked during the war because of italys stance in the war.the owner of the continental cafe in gourock was so fearful for his life he gave a local bobby the keys and never came back.

another poster showed the form you filled in to be a constable, last question, catholic or protestant.no change there then.

Are all issues in this department over and is it just trivial boardroom squabbles that are left? You never hear of anything anymore, it’s like old news. But is it?

@ 4xT. Steve Hackett was fantastic. Brought back many good memories of listening to Genesis, in fact I’ve been listening to nothing else since!

The setlist was all Genesis 71-77.

He started off with Watcher Of The Skies which got the audience into it right away and finished with Los Endos.

I read that his new improved contract has a £50m buyout. Perhaps old contract did not have this and so by getting him to sign a new deal, Spurs can get more dosh for him now.

  18. I watched the Spurs game yesterday on the iPad, his all round play was superb and what a goal. Only pity for me was that the North East Huns didn’t score against Arsenal to put Spurs into the Champions League at their expense.

LiviBhoy – I know it’s unlikely but perhaps Spurs want to keep a player who might sustain those standards over a number of years. Keeping Bale may attract other good players.

Perhaps the player/team is more important to them than the money.

  22. Hello all,

Not long back from France haven’t even lurked for a while but I have just caught up with “Wee Charlottes” revelations, can’t really believe all this. I know you guys have been drip fed the revelations over the past weeks but when you read it all at once two questions jump right out of the pages WTF is going on and Why hasn’t anyone done something about this. Throw Hearts and Dunfermline into the mix and the next question that arises, is there such an organisation as the SFA? Who are they, what are they there for.

    Strange days indeed!!

Day after the final, which we all had tickets for, we’re sitting at the pool, he’s got this contented look on his face, so I ask, he says, “ma weans have took me to see ma team way the rest o our family, disnae get any better. Lost him 2 years ago next week, but he died a very happy contented mhan.

Not going to happen, but the parent co might get bailed out.

  25. Scottish FA chief executive Stewart Regan has described alleged links between former Rangers chief executive Charles Green and Craig Whyte are a “very serious issue”.

The governing body will wait until the outcome of a report, commissioned by the Ibrox club before deciding any action is required.

In April the Ibrox side appointed investigators from Deloitte and Pinsent Masons to look into claims made by former owner Whyte over his relationship with Green during the change of ownership last summer.

Green resigned his position in April but “strenuously denied any wrongdoing”.

Regan said: “We wrote to the club and expressed our concerns on a number of points related to the revelations in the press about the links between Craig Whyte and Charles Green.

“The matter was then handed over to Pinsent Masons under the stewardship of Roy Martin QC and we have agreed that we will wait until that report is concluded.

“The report is being done very much on an independent basis. The club have agreed to share the findings of that report with us so that we can get transparency on the questions that we asked.

“And until that comes out it’s probably wrong to speculate on what might or might not happen.”

In April 2012, the Scottish FA banned Whyte for life from “any participation” in Scottish football for a range of breaches of the association’s rules and regulations.

The 42-year-old claims he was behind Sevco 5088, the company originally designated to subsequently purchase the assets and business of the club.

However Green says he and business partner Imran Ahmad, only told Whyte what he wanted to hear in order to secure a deal with the club’s administrators.

Regan refused to be drawn over whether any alleged dealings would affect the club’s eligibility to play football and the transfer of the club’s Scottish FA membership to Green’s new company, which was agreed last summer.

“It’s unfair to comment on what may or may not have happened on Rangers,” said the Scottish FA chief executive.

“It’s clearly a very serious issue. The club is aware of how serious it is and we have been in discussions with the board of Rangers on that particular point.

“That’s why they have taken the step of appointing Roy Martin QC and Pinsents to come back with the information we seek.

“We fully expect those questions to be answered by the nature of the report. The clubs have shared terms of reference for the investigation and it’s a very thorough investigation.

“We’re expecting the report in the near future.”
