Exploiting a vulnerable man, the drive to Bristol Airport, WW in the UK

611

There is a degree of public interest in reading about, or listening to, spivs exploit the stupidity of some football fans to bring a club to its knees, but the sight of a tired and emotional looking Malcolm Murray stumbling away from an event is neither entertaining nor of interest to anyone with a sense of humanity.

Have you ever seen a drunk football player or official?  I have.  It has never been news before nor should it be now.  If the man has an actual problem the first response from his club and the wider game must be to offer support for one of our national illnesses.

The fan with a phone camera probably knows no better, but passing-round a recording of when a Frankie Howerd impersonator confronted Murray about his alleged problem is truly awful.

The audio was almost certainly not uploaded onto the internet by ‘Howerd’ but it was his decision to make and distribute the recording.  I hope he informed Murray the call was being recorded.

10 years ago today five of us filled a car and drove to Bristol Airport, the nearest available departure point for Scot’s leaving for the Spain; more-local airports were booked out within minutes of the event ahead being confirmed.  Bristol is a small airport but the place was full of other Celtic fans who had travelled south for the same purpose.  Every departure point in the land was filled by green and white.

A remarkable exodus was underway, it was a privilege to be part of it.

Great news, Willie Wallace has made the long trip from Aus and is now in the UK.  Looking forward to catching up with him next week.

I see contributing to Willie’s autobiography has had a dramatic effect on Rod Stewart’s career!  He’s just reached No. 1 in the album chart for the first time in decades.  Hail, hail, Rod.

You can pre-order the autobiography in Willie’s own words, with Rod’s contribution, Brogan Rogan’s best writing yet, and Archie MacPherson’s fantastic scene setting (“the best team I’ve ever seen”) with the link below.  Willie will be signing all copies ordered now just as soon as the presses roll.

Nostalgia overload.  Need to hold it together for tomorrow.

Watch the huns protest now,the SFA will have to call them a new club to get themselves out a tight spot.

SFA use the old get out “not enough evidence at this time” Is it just me or are sfa just guys who deal with Celtic, everyone else seems to do what they please. I am pretty much fed up with Scottish football, its a joke and I know i should only be focused on us and the CF on Sunday, But Its only a matter of time before they shaft us again on or off the park. Hearts, Butcher last month and all the Twitter stuff and nothing, nada, zip. CG with the racist stuff, Nothing he MAY have a case to answer and ALLEGED to have said, Its Funkin there for all to hear. Sick of being treated like a clown, The Club are playing it right by sitting on our hands and not disturbing them while they implode, But Reading Phils last piece he is losing Faith now as well after all his Revelations. I do think there is something to the Old Social unrest thing and they are using that as the Threat, Imagine walking to CP in a Scotland with no Sevco, they would be waiting in the 100s outside and plod would do hee haw, I have no faith in the police, politicians and the footballing authorities worldwide after this debacle. No one has condemned it and done nothing to stop it.

Absolutely scandalous that Stuart Regan is happy for TRFC to conduct their own investigation on this matter. So if they report back that everything is OK then is that the matter closed??

Interesting he referred to them as ‘the club’. Surely these matters are to do with ‘the holding company’ or is there only a distinction between the two when it suits, hmm..

Hoover Dam, Death Valley (maybe take a few Sevconians with you and leave them there), if you don’t mind a wee bit of a drive, abt 3 hrs each way, Zion National Park in Utah is breathtaking.

I went to see Steve Hackett with my two brothers. Not that I was a Genesis fan. In fact my first words to them as I arrived were “So – Steve Hackett: guitar or keyboards?” I just went in a desparate attempt for sibling affection. Or at least acceptance. Or at least tolerance.

Howevah – I actually enjoyed it, especially the Firth of Fifth and Los Endos.

There are many happy Celtic memories being shared on here to-day. Most of these are about Seville and ,while I would be happy to share mine of those happy days, I would rather go back further to 60 years ago to-day. The 20th of May 1953 is a very happy day in Celtic’s history and in my memory.. It has already been mentioned on here that that was the night Celtic won the Coronation Cup by beating Hibs – the Famous Five and all – 2-0 at Hampden, with goal forl Neilly Mochan and Jimmy Walsh. For me it was a joint celebration, for although I had watched the Bhoys beat Arsenal and Man. Uniited on their way to the final, I wasn’t able to go to the match as I was playing in the final of the Scottish Intermediate Shield for O.L.H.S. Motherwell against our near neighbours, Wishaw High School at Fir Park – my immediate opponent was Sammy Reid who became a Celtic favourite when he scored the only goal for Berwick Rangers to knock Rangers out of the Scottish Cup in 1967(The Year of Victories.) We won our match 3-0 and as I was walking off the park my pal shouted the Celtic score from the stand. What an unforgettable night we had on Wednesday the 20th of May 1953 .

BBC 6 Music, played Firth of Fifth in it’s entirety, about 2 weeks ago. That’s the only time I’ve ever heard it on the radio, and it was the track that got me into Genesis.

Still listen to it regularly at home! (when no-one else is about!) My guilty pleasure!

Yes she is playing a blinder. Hopefully she gets a hold of the illusive ‘5 way agreement’. The SFA & Sevco are in serious cahoots with that, big Phil saying today the SFA would have allowed anything for any Rangers to be in Scottish football and will ignore everything that has went on to keep them there. And the fact that neither the SFA or Sevco have revealed anything about it, suggests they both have a lot to lose over it. Come on Charlotte. Transparency.

  16. So the SFA’s response to allegations about The Rangers is to wait for the club’s internal report. Brilliant. What if it clears everyone of doing anything dodgy? Or some of those (allegedly) involved refuse to co-operate?

Maybe this will set a trend of do it yourself investigations? Amazon could investigate itself and report that it has paid all the tax it is due. Other companies could give themselves a clean bill of health too. Great idea.

Would be interesting to see that agreement, especially if there’s anything in it about continuing the myth they are the same club. Big Phil’s article was excellent today, in particular the part about the concern of ‘social unrest’ and I can’t help but think that important people outside of football must have had their input over this agreement, in other words, make sure there is a form of rangers in Scottish football for the sake of the country.

If U R staying at one of the big hotels on the strip ck with the concierge, there are lots of companys that fly the canyon, however, and I don’t want to give you the skitters, they tend to fail once in awhile. I believe you may be able to take a bus trip out to the South Rim, certainly won’t be the same as flying in it. If you haven’t been to vegas before just walking the strip is a trip, plenty of vendors selling water so drink plenty of it, you can always nick into a casino for the Loo. The Venetian, Paris Las Vegas, New York New York and the fountains at Bellagio are all worth seeing, I believe the fountains show starts abt 3pm..?? Depends on how long you are going for, it will probably be hot so don’t knock yourself out, drink plenty of fluids and don’t forget the factor 52 on the back of your legs and neck. Good luck and enjoy.

I may not know much but i do know that what I was watching was a DESPERATE man sitting answering questions.

Time to turn the spotlight onto him, he is ready to break (IMHO)

Yes, and Celtic should have investigated Neil Lennon themselves after swearing at st mirren and reported back, naw he didn’t. Seems to be the way forward?

Incredible stuff from Regan. An internal investigation should not count for anything.

  26. Taken from Willie Wallace – Heart of a Lion out this week on CQN Books…

IT ALL happened on a December day in 1966. It was a Tuesday, a day that invariably meant a slog at training – and this particular Tuesday was no different. After the hard work, we usually had lunch at the pub at Haymarket Station, mainly the first team players from the West of Scotland who travelled by train. I had travelled by car via Bonnybridge and Falkirk to pick up a couple of the younger players. I did my usual thing on the drive home, calling in at the bookies in Falkirk to give them my daily donation, then travelling on to arrive about 3pm. I hadn’t been there long when the phone rang. It was the Hearts manager John Harvey, who asked me if I would be interested in talking to Celtic about signing for them.

John said Jock Stein had called him and would contact me if I were interested. He also told me both clubs had agreed terms and it was now up to me if the transfer went any further. As my wife Olive and baby daughter Lynn were out shopping and mobile phones were a thing of the future, I couldn’t talk to Olive about it all. Only minutes after John’s call, Mr Stein telephoned. He asked me if I would be interested in joining Celtic. I said I would and he invited me to go to Parkhead at 4.30pm that same afternoon. He told me the Hearts party wouldn’t be there until 5.30pm and I asked him if it would be alright for me to be there without the Hearts’ director and manager. He said he had sorted that out with John Harvey.

As I lived at Cumbernauld, only 30 minutes from Parkhead. I waited until 3.50pm before I left, hoping Olive might arrive and I could let her know what was going on. But there was no sign of her by the time I had to go, so I left for the meeting as the only person in my family knowing that anything was happening that afternoon, let alone that what might occur could well be the biggest move in my football career.

On the road, my mind was in turmoil thinking about all the practicalities. What terms should I ask for? What length of contract would be best? Was I really up to the move? These and many other thoughts kept me fully occupied during the drive into the east end of Glasgow. Then another thought struck me: what would the rest of the family think? They were all Rangers’ supporters, like my uncle Jim Brown – my mother’s brother – who was president of the Kirkintilloch Rangers Supporters’ Club. Then I thought to myself that Uncle Jim had taken an interest throughout my career so far and his advice had always been the same: “Do what you feel is best for you and your immediate family”. So I took comfort from that as I pulled into the car park next to the stadium they called “Paradise”.
