The existence of the Premier League International Cup, a tournament for under-21s, which the FA Premier League launched this is a fascinating development. It’s a toe in the water for the Premier League who are running a multi-nation tournament out-with the auspices of Uefa. A consequence of excluding the European governing body is that all games must be played in the territory of England and Wales, despite Celtic and seven others of the 16 teams residing outside that region.
Uefa retain exclusive rights to hold tournaments across multiple territories, although this definition accommodates the existence of the Welsh FA and Welsh teams participation in competitions run by the English FA.
The Premier League has a broken business model which they have been unable to resolve for a decade of more, as they hae studiously avoided growth in their key TV revenue stream stalling. When it does, innovative solutions will be required.
As far as Celtic are concerned, I’m delighted we’re there. In the absence of NextGen this will be a valuable addition to the youth players’ development this season.

My sense of it…
Ogilvie could not be persuaded to stand down when his first term expired, and insisted that he would stand for re-election.
No one amongst the 92 member clubs (or moreover the 22 top clubs) was prepared to stand against him, and he was thus elected unopposed.
The reasons for this appear two-fold:
1) It would have been further divisive at a time of unprecedented division, for the clubs to split along old lines, and the individual ‘nominated’ would have been personally exposed as Turnbull Hutton implies.
2) The clubs are in the process of taking the SFA ‘back’. That is, the SFA and senior football generally is being reorganised by the clubs to better reflect the clubs’ collective challenges. Ogilvie is a Python parrot President who can be tolerated in the interim and until his term of office expires in 2015.
I’m not saying I agree with this approach – even supposing it’s correct – but the clubs are in process of taking back the reins and Ogilvie is a nuisance rather than an obstacle.
Ogilvie was re-elected unopposed as SFA President in 2012. There were arcane rules in place then which meant that candidates for the post were required to have served for a number of years on SFA committees, thus limiting the pool of those qualified to stand to only a handful, none of whom wished to take on the role.
Given the poisonous atmosphere, the march on Hampden, Sleekit demanding names etc. etc. it’s not surprising.
Celtic had Eric Reilly on the SFA board, but he was not “qualified”.
It’s difficult to see how Celtic could have prevented Ogilvie’s re-election, bearing in mind that much of what we now know was not in the public domain then.

Problem is he probably meets the bonus requirements set for him, on paper he looks a success. On the football park his reign is an utter shambles.

There should be a balance between on field success and financial success.
KPI ‘s tend to reflect what is easiest to measure as opposed what needs to be measured.
If for no other reason than to prevent accusations of the CEO lining his pockets, apart from KPIs being fit for purpose, then this is an important issue to address.
The way to do that is present a sound case that will get sufficient shareholders to sign up to and put it to an AGM.
(Good luck with that one for its no walk in the park.)

IIRC,the reasons for Ogilvie being re-elected were down to eligibility criteria.
SFA rules stated that eligibility was confined to time-servers. For instance,neither you nor I would be able to stand.
Those who were eligible didnae fancy it. Thems the rules.
Those rules,I believe,have been relaxed. Indeed,we may soon be faced with a choice of Lawwell or Ogilvie.
As an example.
Ogilvie cannot stand for a 3rd term.

I heard he made a bit of a nuisance of himself with uninvited visits to the previous Compliance Officer’s office.
He was also in post from June 2011 when the UEFA Licence submission under Article 66 was presented to UEFA.

Not as simple as it looks since neither you or I have the full information here. We both suspect that it had something to do with the prospects of Celtic gaining entry into another league becoming unlikely in the near future. That is still not the same as never. It is not the same as in the mid to longer term either.

We did not even try to block Ogilvies re-election. And it was a straightforward opportunity – we were not trying to unseat someone mid-term; his tenure had come to an end, being power crazed he was always going to stand for re- election and we should have been planning for that 12 months beforehand especially as he was a toxic “brand” to quote the buzz word around these parts.
Surely if the choice is between a known improper person or a new untainted person then the clubs would go with the new untainted candidate?
But it’s a moot question as despite being the largest most powerful club we did not offer an alternative to Ogilvie.
Which makes you wonder how high up the SFA and it’s mid-governance features in Celtic’s risk management approach.
What’s the saying – be the change you want to be. Celtic plc should take heed.

I fail to see how we could field a development squad in next gen, domestic competition and also this new tournament. I don’t think we have enough development players for that. Mind you I see a few other clubs are giving it a go, Benfica Man City Chelsea Porto Bilbao and Schalke.

I didn’t reply to Bosman ruling for a reason. As it was to do with personal wealth of footballers and agents over personal wealth of clubs. Footballers and agents won on that occassion. Fans have been ripped of even more so because of it as footballers at the highest level have gained a Godly priceless image since the date of that ruling. Fans accept that and accept any numerical value of worth they put on their feet kicking a baw.

My preference and if we are allowed to, is go to a pan – European league.
England would have too much hassle for our support. A section of England fans will attempt to cause havoc in our stadium at the Scotland England game next month, taking their lead from their quintessentially British cousins last ever visit to our stadium.
If we ever got to play in an English League, our supporters would have to put up with a lot of provocation and the even the hard time we get from our media will be nothing to what the English media will hit us with.
I doubt even Bawsman feels now that that was a fight worth fighting unless of course he received financial gain for fighting his and his collegues position in the long term.

I’m all for SFA reform and have been advocating such for years, I just don’t think blaming Celtic for the re election of CO in the prevailing circumstances is sound ground for change.
I’m actually mystified that he has hung on so long, I suspect he knows where the bodies are buried.
