Fighting the same foe too many times

1064

Napoleon observed that no one should fight the same enemy too many times, as eventually their superior ways and techniques will become redundant as the inferior foe will eventually hit on a strategy which works.

Dundee United did reasonably well in their two games against Celtic in the last 9 days, despite playing a considerable part of both games with a man disadvantage.  They will arrive at Celtic Park tomorrow night having learned a few lessons, and hooping to compete with a full complement of players.

The danger for Celtic lies in what happened against St Johnstone at Celtic Park earlier this month.  The Perth team have won only two of their nine games since 17 January but they knew what to expect from Celtic, who were marginally off-pace, enough so to leave the field without points.  Another marginally off-pace performance tomorrow night and talk of trebles will evaporate in an instant.

If we’re vulnerable at any point between now and the end of the season, it’s this midweek.

  1. Ah! Woke up shattered this morning.

Can you über Celtic fans do me a favour.

Can you go along and support Celtic tonight into the Final cause I canny be bothered. Too tired and it’s not as if it’s a CL game anyway.

I’ll catch chippy on the way home and log in for a moan later.

Keep up to date though on bad passes, missed chances, poor performances et cetera so a can have a right good moan during game time on here.

    Cheers.

  2. Good morning CQNers,

Dundee United have finished second best and men short in the last two games and you’ve got to suspect that even if they keep all eleven on the field tonight they’ll still finish second best.

Playing at home on a good surface and a home crowd all suggest Celtic will have all the advantages, but without a disciplined up-tempo performance it’ll all count for nothing.

Tonight I’m especially looking forward to Scot Brown playing his usual robust game but one that he recognises he needs to temper some of the rashness that creeps into his game from time to time.

Nir Bitton has excelled in European games but has been a little subdued in the Dundee Utd games, tonight I’ve a feeling his height may be a ploy to overcoming the packed Utd defence. However, if that is one of the tactics there has to be a massive improvement in the crosses and corner kicks.

    C’mon the Bhoys.

  3. Morning all. Lovely day in prospect down here. Spring in the air?

Over in BBC land, things remain the same. Radio Scotland @ 10pm last night: the Alloa manager quoted as saying it was a great point that should have been 3; @ 6.30 today, he is quoted as only saying a great point and then @ 7.30 he isn’t even mentioned while McCall insists the score should have been 3-2 to his team.

By the bye, has anyone discovered how much injury time was added last night. I reckon it must have been the best part of 10 minutes. Shurely not?? I think we should be told.

I agree Celtic, or whoever, have priced the game sensibly. But although 15 quid isn’t expensive for football in Scotland it is an additional expense that some simply can’t afford.

I do agree with your wish that as many as possible turn up tonight.

Thanks for your offer last night but I’d fallen asleep by then :-)

Any problems and I’ll let you know on here sir.

  6. H/T,

I think Burnley 78 has a point. I know a number of people who were asking me for tickets for the game against the deid team or Inter but who show no interest in games like tonight. For the likes of those, it is not in the main a question of money. Saddens me, I must admit.

  7. Aye….the 135k 0f Celtic supporters who went to the Celtic – Leeds ECSF at Hampden had a bliddy cheek…where did they go to every other week?…bliddy chancers so they wur.

Pretty narrow to criticise all those who won`t be going tonight . There will be many who want to go but cannot and there will be many who can but don`t want to. Their choice.

As regards support for the team, I find the `smaller ` crowds, in general, more supportive of the players. The only reason I like a big crowd is for the atmosphere. Watching my team perform remains the same.

Anyway, if we can have the guy who said there were 28,000 at Ibrox last night counting our crowd, we will have a full house .

  19. ‘Commons: I want Rangers to win promotion’

KRIS COMMONS, the Celtic midfielder, has conceded that the prospect of a dream season with three domestic trophies cannot disguise the fact he wants Rangers back in the SPFL Premiership as quickly as possible.

The 31-year-old concedes the fourth treble of his club’s rich history is now so close that he can almost touch it and insists the absence of their arch-rivals from the top division would not devalue such an achievement in the slightest.

However, having recently signed a deal that will keep him at Parkhead until the summer of 2017, he is desperate to see Rangers knocked into shape by their new manager Stuart McCall and capable of returning the Old Firm derby to the calendar.

“The games with Rangers are the best games,” said Commons.”They draw the best crowds and a large TV audience of people around the world.

“It makes people want to get out of bed in the middle of the night in Australia and watch a game.

“My mates down south don’t know a great deal about Scottish football, but they want to see that game.

“I love playing in them. There are a lot of fans who are on the fence about whether it’s right or wrong, but I enjoy the games.”

Celtic play host to Dundee United this evening in a quarter-final replay in the William Hill Scottish Cup with Inverness Caledonian Thistle waiting for the winner in the last four.

Commons put United to the sword with the opening goal in Sunday’s 2-0 League Cup final victory at Hampden and moved his manager, Ronny Deila, closer to his “dream” of three cups in the cabinet at the end of his first season in Scotland.

Jock Stein and Martin O’Neill are the only managers to achieved such a feat with Celtic and Commons insists Deila will deserve to take his place beside them irrespective of the situation Rangers find themselves in at the moment.

“If we can get across the line and achieve this treble, I don’t think it should be belittled or looked upon as a lesser achievement,” he said. “It’s the same sort of level.

“I think the last time it was done was in an era when money and wages were massive.

“You look at that team with (Chris) Sutton, (Neil) Lennon, (John) Hartson and (Henrik) Larsson. They were on fortunes and I think they got a huge amount of credit for what they did.”

Commons realises his hopes of renewing hostilities with Rangers next season are still some way from coming to pass. Hearts are runaway leaders in the Championship and Rangers seem more preoccupied with hanging onto a play-off spot than winning promotion.

Commons admits, however, that he has not been shocked by the way the Ibrox side have failed to adjust to life at a lower level.

“Listen, it is not just Rangers,” said Commons. “I have played in the Championship in England with teams trying to get back up and it’s not easy.

“Some teams go down from the Premier League and they end up in League One two or three years later, like Blackpool, Sheffield United and Sheffield Wednesday.

“Not only does affect the players, the manager and coaches and the fans. It’s a city thing. It’s a massive thing.

“It’s very difficult to have the wind knocked out of your sails and become and very confident bunch of lads to get promotion.

“Bournemouth and Brentford are showing momentum coming from League One and now heading towards the Premiership.

“When you have a team that’s full of confidence and winning, it’s very natural.

“When you are struggling – as Rangers are – to make that step, that’s when you need to call on experience. That’s what they are obviously trying to do with Stuart McCall.”

I live about 20 miles from Paradise but going to the game has logistical issues, never mind financial ones.

With a bit of planning supporters can look ahead and budget accordingly.

This game has been thrown into the mix at short notice as well so pulling money from nowhere is just not possible for a lot of people.

  23. parkheadcumsalford

I have acknowledged that. My phone was going mental for the games against Sevco and Inter.

However, I also understand that supporters will prioritise and those games, plus the cup final may be seen as bigger or more important than tonight’s game.

  24. Jamesgang … I agree

but Mr Guidetti agent thinks he is at least 5-10 million… we can not afford that… Ronny lets him warm up in front of the support … takes some adulation … and then back to the bench….. lets see what the boy wants??? Sign the contract (and become a legend) or get to warm a rich bench….. in obscurity….. its your call Johnny

  25. In fairness KevJ is much closer than the £15 ticket cost

£10 bus fare for some of us Central Bhoys ( would also cost around same if taking car)

£5 – 7 for something to eat , if you work, getting home first and trying to catch something to eat before heading out is very very difficult

For me * 2 as I take my ghirl with me

Now I am fortunate I can afford it

    But

An SFA run competition, gate money split

Do you remember C Ogilvie, S Bryson etc, 5 way agreements, now P Murray back in place, anyone heard any challenge on that ? their still in place

So I Will not fund any SFA run competition, until we get honesty and treated as equals

Can anyone advise me if id be ok to turn up tonight and be able to buy a ticket.

Not sure if they will still be any left or if they will even still be on sale.

Was hoping to be through by about 7pm and was hoping to stop by ‘the corner’ and get a ticket then.

    Is this a bad idea?

Im at work so replying to any advice might be too awkward but i will manage to read it and reply a bit later when i get the chance.

    Mon the Hooooooooooooooooooooooooooops the night.

  29. IF anyone has a spare ticket id be happy to pay for it and pick it up at the corner btw :)

  30. Close the business at 6pm on the dot. 10 min walk to the car. Drive to Glasgow at warp 3 except for the third of the route now policed by average speed cameras. If no traffic problems, arrive just in time for kickoff.

    Three tickets =£45. Diesel £25. Programme for youngster £5. There’s £75 already.

Solution? Celtic to win every cup tie at the first time of asking and avoid bliddy replays :-) I will drop Ronny a line and suggest it

  31. Ok. There have been times in most celtic supporters lives that they couldn’t afford to go to the football.

It is an unfortunate situation most of us have experienced at some point. Prioritising cash is important for everyone.

Work commitments also get in the way. I understand that too.

My point is we clearly had 60000 who could afford to pay twice the cost of a ticket for tonight’s game, last month, when we played inter. Folk who managed to have no thee commitments that night ether.

Hopefully of that 60000, most of whom, can afford the football, we can get a decent crowd along to support our team in a game which really matters and where support CAN make the difference in potentially winning a treble for only the 2nd time in my adult life.

Jock Stein famously said football without fans is nothing.

Celtic needs its support tonight more than any other game, against an aggrieved opponent, is my point.

The flat atmosphere we had v st johnstone post the Aberdeen euphoria will not help Celtics cause.

A win tonight will set up a fantastic 13 games for the rest of the season. The treble is on. We continue with a positive momentum

A loss and we have a burst ball with the energy sucked out of our season and left to worry about possibly losing the league from our position of strength.

My plea is get along and back the team …… if you can !
