Fighting the same foe too many times

1064

Napoleon observed that no one should fight the same enemy too many times, as eventually their superior ways and techniques will become redundant as the inferior foe will eventually hit on a strategy which works.

Dundee United did reasonably well in their two games against Celtic in the last 9 days, despite playing a considerable part of both games with a man disadvantage.  They will arrive at Celtic Park tomorrow night having learned a few lessons, and hooping to compete with a full complement of players.

The danger for Celtic lies in what happened against St Johnstone at Celtic Park earlier this month.  The Perth team have won only two of their nine games since 17 January but they knew what to expect from Celtic, who were marginally off-pace, enough so to leave the field without points.  Another marginally off-pace performance tomorrow night and talk of trebles will evaporate in an instant.

If we’re vulnerable at any point between now and the end of the season, it’s this midweek.

Thunder Road-Celtic shops were selling them……..just seen GM’s very kind offer mate…

  2. in days gone bye, celtic bringing a cup replay to celtic park on the wednesday night, would see massive crowds in attendance, and sometimes the highest of the season.

thats way back then offcourse, but many huge replays at celticpark.

  3. Maybe the club should consider having cup replays on the ST. Also have a general sale at £10 adults, and kids for a quid.

  4. Hamiltontim,

I know what you’re saying. I’m not really arguing with you. It just saddens me that there are guys who clamour for tickets (and too often get them at the expense of genuine supporters) for what they see as glamour ties but won’t bother to attend what are imo much more important matches.

  5. FFin’ priorities:

“For years now I have been moaning about our ball boys and girls, and how I think they are too young and disconnected from what is actually happening on the park. I look across the city in particular and at other clubs, and they have ball boys as mid to late teens, usually guys who are tactically aware of when to hurry and when not to hurry…our ball boys/girls could be doing with some simple basic tactical awareness training, when to get the ball back quickly, when not to etc.

We seem to have more girls than boys and, although this may sound sexist it is nonetheless true, most girls of that age can’t catch or chase balls as quickly as boys of the same age can.

Last night I watched as Lee Wallace’s shot flew off to the corner flag, and none of the ball girls (it was all girls around that corner at that time, about five of them) bothered to go after it. They just stood and watched while the Alloa goalie trotted slowly to the corner to retrieve the ball, and then trotted back slowly, and then two of the girls went over to that corner for a wee chat together.

You get the impression that ‘any old thing will do’ for Rangers. Don’t get me wrong, this is not aimed at the current board as they are just in the door and have a multitude of far more important things to deal with, but it sums up how unprofessionally the whole club has been run for a long time.”

    ——

“the ball boy issue and match day DJ are two aspects whic simply must be addressed moving forward.”

    ——

“I agree about the matchday DJ point as well. How long have we been treated to the same build-up to matches, the same tunes, the same old same old routine. The old worn out faded flags waved in the centre circle.”

    ——

“Having efficient and match aware ball boys / girls can add a few precious minutes playing time or, if we’re in front, slow the game down.”

    ——

“The ball boys/girls lackadaisical attitude is indicative of the club as a whole”

Although to be fair to KC his quotes bear no resemblance to the headline or some of the text. He says they are the best games to pay in – well nobody but the players can comment on that but it seems a common theme. Also that it generates a lot of excitement among the fans. Unfortunately I think the cup game proved that. Despite what many of us here feel.

Nowhere do I see him urging the mullet to get them back up. All he says is that it can be harder than people think to get up the leagues and he understands why they’ve gone for an experienced man to try and achieve it.

The BBC has some value from time to time, e.g. their match stats can throw up some interesting facts and figures.

For instance, it can illustrate why Sevco have started to struggle in their division.

    Specifically, they’ve become ‘soft touches’.

At least that’s what I think the figures show …

Having noticed a curious ratio of bookings to fouls in Sevco’s last couple of games, I decided to have a quick shifty back at their 9 league games since the turn of this year.

    Here’s what I found:

Sevco: fouls committed 102; bookings received 5

Opponents: fouls committed 89; bookings received 18

From these remarkable figures one might reasonably deduce that Sevco players’ tackles aren’t as ‘meaty’ as those of their opponents. Hence, they’re not ‘competing’ as they ought.

A cynic might note, however, that opposition players are more than 4 times as likely to be booked for a foul as their Sevco rivals … who could, of course, be tackling more gently in order to avoid an awkward suspension or two.

Sevco still will get the play-offs. They will need a lot of honest mistakes to get past Queen of the South, Hibs and whatever SPL team they have to play.

    They might get them mind.

    THEY won’t need them.

Should THEY fail in the play offs, there will be immediate league reconstruction to ensure that THEY are in top tier next.season. And we won’t hear a cheep from PL about the integrity of the competition.

In fact he will be leading the reconstruction brigade.

Burnley78 – we don’t have 60k core supporters attending anymore, I would put it closer to 35 – 40k for Saturday’s with 5 – 10k less for midweek games. Probably a multitude of reasons for it, not sure what can be done as this game is priced reasonably well…

    Good Morning.

A number of months ago I was in a pub chatting and having a pint.

In itself that is nothing much to report, but someone I was with started a conversation by asking who the rest of us thought had been the most influential footballer to play the game in the last 50 years — in pure footballing terms and so discounting the feats of players who had gone on to be MP’s, started fashion chains, chairity foundations and so on.

We also ruled out those who had played and went on to manage.

What we discussed was which footballer has had the biggest impact on the game itself as a player?

There were loads of candidates — Bosman, Cruyff, Beckenbaur and so on.

When I went to the bar I stood beside someone from an adjoining table who mentioned that he could not but help overhearing our conversation and he immediately proffered a candidate from left field so to speak.

It was a brief conversation but he made several good points and suggested that I look into his argument further — he promised that it would be reasonably compelling.

The result is a rather long Strandsky tale — over 14,000 words.

It tells the story of a footballer, and yes it does make a reasonable case for suggesting that he just might be the most influential football player of the last several decades.

You are perfectly free to disagree of course but from out of left field i give you The Little King of the Park and the Elastico Fantastico.

  24. I think a big problem going to watch Celtic is parking.and after the game its horrendous getting back home.London rd is a nightmare.why don’t the police make the whole of London rd a one way when the match ends.and just to think of the many railway lines that used to be there.were the oak pub is round the corner in Whitby street there was a railway station.so it was all in place then but I’m sure there is line from argyle low level to Bridgetown cross but the tunnel is closed off.maybe it wasn’t such a bad idea way back when Fergus turned to locate to Cambuslang I’m sure it had good motorway and railway links that good have benefited everyone.

  25. timbhoy2

The proposed relocation to a contaminated site in Cambuslang was a ‘pie in the sky’ scheme by the old board.

One of the first things Fergus did when he took control was to ditch the idea.

    Thankfully.
