Final deck clearing for deadline day

1075

The day has arrived, 31 August, on a Champions League season, but news has been slow (in general) or there has been no news (at Celtic) so far.  Pity help those who were not busy this morning and have burned through a packed of antacids.  Deadline day reveals human nature in all its glory.

Last night Ipswich Town agreed a deal to take Daryl Murphy, whom they had on loan last season and the final six months of the previous season.  Daryl would have been keen to bring his Celtic uncertainty to an end (he is out of contract when this loan period at Ipswich expires) as he has clearly enjoyed more success in the English Championship.

We didn’t see the best of Daryl but it’s good news Celtic were prepared to release him.  He would surely have been retained if there was not a good chance of recruiting a replacement.  No promises, of course!

Stay tuned throughout the day.  If we have another ‘Robbie Keane Day’ when the CQN server takes a battering I’ll update the Facebook page and Twitter.

    story=’THE Celtic squad gathered at their Lennoxtown training ground to anxiously watch the draw for the UEFA Champions League group stages, eagerly waiting to discover which three teams they would be facing. The Hoops have been drawn into Group G along with the favourites for the competition, Barcelona, Portuguese side Benfica and Russia’s Spartak Moscow.  Former Celtic winger Aiden McGeady will return to Celtic Park, but this time playing for Spartak Moscow, while the Hoops have faced Barcelona and Benfica in previous UEFA Champions League campaigns, where manager Neill Lennon faced them as a player.  Immediately after the draw took place, the official Celtic website caught up with midfielder James Forrest to get his reaction to the draw.“I’m delighted to get Barcelona in the group stages,” said Forrest. “It’s a good draw and it’s good to get a few big teams.”The Scottish champions know that facing the Catalan giants will be the toughest of tests, both at Celtic Park and at the Camp Nou, but it’s something Forrest and his team-mates are looking forward to.“Barcelona will be the toughest match,” explained the Hoops player, “but I’m looking forward to playing at the Nou Camp and facing players like Lionel Messi, Andres Iniesta and Xavi. “It means a lot for us as a team to get through to the group stages. It’s what we’ve wanted to do for a while now. We’ve not been there for four years so we’re delighted to get in.” And as for Celtic’s chances in the group, Forrest is confident but realistic. “Obviously when we’re at home we’ll be going all-out to win the games and it could either make or break us, so we’ll see how we do,” he said.Celtic´s three home games are Benfica (September 19), Barcelona (November 7) and Spartak Moscow (December 5)  As a thank-you to season ticket holders for their backing this season, Celtic are delighted to announce that adult prices for the three-match packages will be just £84, with concessions costing £60.  This represents a significant reduction on our 2008/09 prices of £93 and £72 respectively.  Non-season ticket holders will be able to buy similar packages at £105 and £75 for adult and concession respectively, again reflecting a drop from the 2008/09 prices of £114 and £99.  Tickets will go on sale to season ticket holders from 9.30am on Saturday, assuming all match dates have been agreed. Sale dates for non-season ticket holders will be announced in due course. Watch the official Celtic website for further updates.  It’s not too late to guarantee your seat at Paradise for the entire campaign by buying your season ticket now.  Season tickets can be purchased by visiting the Ticket Office or calling the Ticket Office Enquiry Line on 0871 226 1888, option 1, option 2** Calls cost up to 10p per minute, telecoms provider dependent. Mobile and other provider charges may vary.‘;

I have tried all the words out on my bro in law. Newco, franchise and many more

SOOOOOOOOO far sevco gets the best desired reaction :)))

So for now its sevco when he uses the word R*****S I stop the conversation instantly and refuse to discuss football further :)

It drives him absolutely mad (again desired effect) :))

An experienced CH (is a must) and i would be happy.

A proven goalscorer and I would be delighted ,but CH top of my shopping list.

An experienced CH would free up CM & VW to do what they do best

What we have alredy is more than enough for the SPL but if we want progress a CH it is (IMHO).

Personally, would love to see Jenwyn Jones, if that one is still live, would be great to have a striker with his attrributes – strong and fast and can head the ball into the net!!

    You quote me saying

“To provide that, we need Rogne to stay fit and develop. or we need Kelvin to kick on from his last few better (but not great) performances”

    and you reply:-

“That´s a tall order on the point of being deluded between now and midnight ;-)”

Why did you truncate the quote to cut off “or we need a new CB” in order to present the view as delusional?

    It changes the meaning entirely.

I believe we need a new CB and what’s more, I fully expect to get one in this transfer window.

Now that you can call delusional but we’ll see by midnight.

  10. CELTIC’S glamour draw against Barcelona in the European Champions League will see Glasgow and the other 11 SPL clubs cash in.

The city’s hotels, restaurants, pubs and shops will be in the money when thousands of visiting fans arrive to see Celtic play the Spanish giants as well as legendary Portuguese side Benfica and Spartak Moscow in the group stages of the UEFA competition, says Glasgow’s tourism boss.

Scott Taylor, chief executive of Glasgow City Marketing Bureau, said: “This is a welcome boost for local businesses as they have a chance to showcase what they can offer.

“Our research shows that more than 500 extra hotel rooms are taken up when Celtic play a Champions League home match.

“The warm welcome of local people and the vibrancy of the city will encourage return visits and spread the word from spectators of how fantastic a city Glasgow is to their families and friends back home, as well as to millions watching the matches on TV.

“Celtic have brought great prosperity to Glasgow over the years and its success in qualifying for the group stages in the UEFA Champions League is brilliant news to Glasgow and Scotland.”

A spokesman for Sevco stated that “As this was all well and good” they could ‘guarantee’ a mini bus load of Elgin Fans to come to Glasgow on Sunday.

  12. Don’t think we necessarily need to bring new players in, but it’s always nice. However I am worried most of our targets have already found other clubs.

I think if we had really wanted Del Piero we could have had him over Sydney. It would be good to have a player of his experience and class around the squad and I do think he still has something to offer.

Henriksen is a massively missed opportunity.

Rhodes we couldn’t afford this year but should have got last year for half the amount.

Russell is a good player but in the Stokes mould. Don’t see the point if I’m honest and certainly not for £2m.

The defenders we’ve been linked to I’m unsure of – we don’t have the best record in signing centre-backs.

  13. Nothing happenning…..ok….while yer all waiting and I ponder life’s iniquities such as finally entering the modern age and replacing the toilet brush with bleach; only to buy a bottle and find when I came home that I already have one secreted down the pack of the pan….

@12:22 “For what it’s worth, the best acid test performance I’ve seen from CM came in the ne’erday game v’s the huns were Sammi scored the two goals.

Neil played CM in left-mid and he was magnificent. imo.”

    _______________________________________________________________

Would you not say that what you described above is “the real CM” rather than a poor game at the back against Aluko. I’d say you should make your judgement of any player based on his best position!

All players have off days especially when played out of position.

For the avoidance of any doubt, I agree that central defense should be the main priority and any signing should be good enough to be a first choice starter.
