Financial cost and prep for 2016

988

I reckoned Champions League participation was worth circa £22m to Celtic. By contrast, Europa League football will be worth less than a quarter of that. Ancillary income, such as retail and kiosk sales, will also suffer.

The challenge now is to improve the team without that income. This should not be impossible. Malmo managed it, and we’re not in a situation where the bank is hammering at the door. But what should be clear, is that the next five days represent the best chance to strengthen the team for next August’s qualifiers. There’s a notion that the biggest games of our season come early, but we’ve 11 months to plan for 2016’s biggest games.

Three things to remind you about:

Golfers: buy a raffle ticket for £1 to win a round of golf FOR FOUR PEOPLE at the magnificent Aberdour course in Fife. Competition ends on Saturday, get your tickets here!!! It’s offered by Taggsybhoy, in support of the Foundation.

Aberdour

There’s a Mary’s Meals collection from 1pm on the Celtic Way ahead of the game on Saturday. Ideally we’re looking for backpacks, but handtowels (the school kitchens you paid for have handwashing facilities and each child is given their own handtowel), pencils, rulers, etc.

If the kids got new kit for starting school last week, dig out the old stuff and bring it along.

Magners have kindly donated two Premium Seats in the Jock Stein Stand for Saturday’s games. You can win the tickets by answering this question:

Who is Celtic’s top scorer this season?

Player’s surname in the SUBJECT line of your email to celticquicknews@gmail.com . Competition closes at 22:00 TONIGHT, so not a lot of time to enter.

No call today for a donation, go stick a £1 in Taggsy’s raffle instead. Thanks.

Everyone says D.D. calls the shots at Parkhead they also say he is not interested in the hoops if that ia the case why would he bother it makes no sense to me ? I think he is interested but is not prepared to spend millions on the hoops he wants them to be self financing which to me makes sense. H.H.

i think someone posted the other day that DD purchased his shares with the thought that we’d be in a bigger and better league by now, beit a version of the Atlantic league or even the EPL, when that chance receeded he busted his flush, id be surprised if he could punt his shares now. All investors want, and thats all he is, is a return for his money, SPFL offers him little return but a return nonetheless

I’ve been thinking about our quality/£ problem for the last few minutes. It doesn’t actually start with the Scott Brown’s and Kris Commons’ in the team. It’s in the youth and prospects level.

At that stage, as we all know, it’s still probably no better than 50/50 that a player will make it but any bright star will no doubt be on the radar of some EPL club that can take a punt and it’s relatively pennies for them even if the player never makes it. It’s also not a huge upheaval for a player to move from Glasgow to say London at a young age.

The problem with that is if we want to keep the young players we’re probably having to offer them a decent amount and from there it escalates. This is less of an issue for foreign teams as due to settlement issues etc they’re less likely to be looked at by eg EPL teams.

Across the whole spectrum of player recruitment we are hampered by our big money next door neighbours.

  5. don’t think our avge. wage is 17k. b rown is 30+ but the rest would be about 8k at best .

Paul, I openly admit that I am a glass half full kind of guy.

However, can you point to anything in our past, apart from the beginning of the MON era, that even remotely suggests that we will use the remainder of the present transfer window to recruit the kind of quality that would be required to assure us of CL qualification.

A more likely scenario reminiscent of the Kenny Miller episode is that Virgil will be offski and Lo and Behold there will not be enough time left to get any body in.

Even if the report in today’s Herald is only half true, it is beyond astonishing that RD would have us believe that money coming in would go on new players.

Was this not a similar sentiment in the aftermath of Maribor last year? Not sure what the plan was back then but only Saidy & Dedryk were changes from last years disappointment & one of them was effectively making his debut v Malmo. Hopefully the next 11 months planning are more inspired than the previous 11.

  9. For all I don’t think the board are doing a good job running the team, they are the finances all things considered.

I also reckon it’s a total waste of time getting rid of Pedro, no matter how much he gets in wages and bonus, cos he is only doing what he is told to do.

He has a remit, and it’s the PLC comes first, the football is secondary, that is as plain as the nose on your face.

    Until this changes.

I am delighted that many are now coming round to my way of thinking that we need a few old heads in the team, I am nearly done in banging on about it, have done for years, thankfully people are now listening, hopefully the suits will pay heed.

As for your lead Paul about preparing for next seasons assault on the CL, dearie me Paul, you have been saying that for a few years now, and I’m sorry, we have a tad more savvy that to believe that we will, the proof is in the pudding, it ain’t happening now nor in the past few years, when we were told it would, and it won’t happen this time either.

I and most on here do not zip up the back.

Thankfully for Pedro and his cohorts, there are many who do and follow them blindly, but come what may, judgement day will come.

  10. Perhaps it is time to bring about a more stringent relationship to on the field results when it comes the salaries and fringe benefits being pocketed by suits.

Also transparency as to who got what out of the acquisition of expensive bingers such as Boerrigter.

  11. Trying to get the shifting economics of football straight in my head, I ask myself the following questions?

    1. How much would proven EPL strikers,Sutton and Hartson, cost us today? 40MM?

    2. Going a little further back, Stubbs and Lambert? 30MM?

    3. Could we have brought Johnston(I know!) and McAvennie to the club today? Similar to signing Kane and Berahinho

even with the biscuit tin in the 80s/90s we could sign from West Ham, Watford, Liverpool,Arsenal

MON got the one and only chance in that market and it took share issues and debt to do it.

I think we need Lubo out scouting on the fringes of the EU. Too hard to get permits for S Americans and Africans in our budget(not played enough for the national team)

Where do we go from here?

The second half of Wednesday was lacking in heart …. for which the players must look in the mirror …. but the whole game was lacking in any sort of football brain ….. for which the coach must carry the can.

Sadly, we cant fire all the players and/or PL … the old saying is that it is easier to fire one coach than 11 players …

I was excited when RD, and his promise of the 4-2-31 system, signed … being a fan of the spanish game, where that system flourished and produced some really good football to watch, I was hopeful that we would adapt to it, and start to play some real football …

I had my concerns, as it requires a level of skill that, frankly, is lacking in the scottish game…. but I had high hopes that RD, with his sense of discipline, would get the players being fitter and playing a faster more skillful game, as this system demands ….

sadly, except for the fitness level (which, to be fair to RD, has improved dramatically), most of the rest has been an abject failure …

what should be clear by now is that the 4231 does not work for us …. at present, our players have neither the skill nor confidence to flourish in .it.

It requires our players (particularly the front 4) to pass and move … to see passes quickly, to make passes quickly, and to take on players …. with few exceptions (NB being one) few of our players seem to have these skills. RD was right the other night … our players seemed afraid … some struggle to make or take basic passes … very few have the confidence to take on and beat their man …. they play like they are afraid.

without basic ball skills, and a confidence in them, the 4231 simply does not work …

It requires two wingers who put in a shift, but who can and do take on defendners and get to the by line … when was the last time JF did that with any regularity?

usually it requires a striker to feed off the 3, or to hold the ball up to make chances for the breaking 3 … I like LG, but that isn’t his game… and so far NC hasn’t set the heather alight …. although I think the problems lies elsewhere …

Mostly, that system requires a no 10 (the middle of the three) who can create in tight spaces …Valeron (Deportivo) or Aima (Valencia)r, or some of the guys at Bortmund all did this well …. SJ puts in a fair amount of work, but he simply does not possess the skils to play the role that this system demands … yet he seems to be the first name on the team sheet everyweek. KC is a great goal scorer, but playmaker role is not his forte…. SA seems to me to be the best choice for that role, but question marks remain until he is given a run in that role, and we see how he does.

RD must either figure out how to improve the players he has, so that they can play the system he wants (which, at the moment, they simply aren’t good enough to do), or he needs to figure out a system that plays to the players strenght. I didn’t always enjoy the football played by Strachan’s Celtic, but he knew how to set up a system that got the most from his players… as he is doing now with Scotland.

IF RD can get the players to learn and play his system, I think the rewards would be higher – that is , if he can get the players to learn and play it …. but right now, he is doing neither. If he cant or wont change, either his system, or his efforts to get the players to play the system he demands – and soon ! – then someone else needs to come who can get more out of our players.

    Latest League cup draw news:

    Sevco in home tie shocker.

And in the Efe, Izzy debate, I thought Janko did as well as Efe would at RB but Charlie was about as mobile as one of those dummies you practice taking free kicks over.Izzy would have been better. Charlie must have been in there for his height defending corners etc. Nuff said.

  14. RWE If you are about. Great summary of the game in Glasgow and good post after the second leg. Good tribute and work in memory of your son, Sir.

    ——

As for the CL competition, after the game in Glasgow I expected much more and promotion to the group stage.

Celtic I knew and remembered had always few leaders and fighters. Celtic I know from last and this season has not one leader.

  15. I am Not Lurking Anymore on

It’s all big Pedro’s fault It was him who picked the team

It was him who couldn’t set a team out to defend corners

It was him who lost a 2 goal leaf at CP

No point getting rid of Ronny.

Get rid of the slow death condition also known as terminal accountancy.

  17. Seems most people agree that the prioritising of plc over football team has to change.

    Equal footing for both.

    But will our absent landlord?

There is so much merit for those calling for the present transfer policy of only those with sell on value being signed ending and some experienced players added.

Also would like to see an experienced consultant added to help Ronnie implement his coaching strategy properly.

At the moment we are three separate parts(defense, midfield ,attack) and not a complete team.

  18. Wonder what the odds are for sevco’s league cup tie being televised live?

    I know,I know……..

    Corrupt to the core.

Anyway, enough of skint cheats being propped up by SFA/SPFL and broadcasters, back at the champs I say farewell VVD, enjoy your money. Our new CB is already at the club imo….. Lustig (if he can stay fit for more than 10 minutes). Janko to RB. Left back? Get scouting Eastern European leagues for a young, quick left footed mentalist trying to make a name for himself.

Aided and abetted by a terrible refereeing decision in Malmo Celtic have made an utter erse of this tie. Here’s hoping lessons are learned and the rest of the season is successful and enjoyable.

We’re angry and rightly so. Let’s channel it positively.

Remember….we’re not the perma-angry,hate filled, wild eyed buffoons who lap up every piece of nonsense propaganda laid in front of us.

  19. I’m fed up with all this talk about money. It’s a game of football 11v11

We’re not very good at buying players to the standard we want.

We buy players in give them a run in the team.

If I was a young Celtic player (under 20) I would be thinking, “what chance have I got?”

We sell Matthews so young Fisher gets a chance.

Nope your out on loan son.

Izzy gets injured, Tierney you played well son but you can only play about twice a year.

Hendo I’ve no room in my team because of the golden child.

Chance for young O’Connell if VVD goes but let’s buy someone else and not give you a chance.

Be brave Ronny and give the youngsters a run in the team.

Ronny has underperformed but I agree he has to be backed against any mutinous player/s.

If he is being undermined, I don’t think it will solely be because of one remark made in the aftermath of Tuesday’s disappointment. There is likely to be more to it than that. The last thing we want is a Paul Le Guen situation on our hands.

  23. It’s amazing that Peter Lawwell doiesn;t get the praise for good signings and results but gets the abuse for the bad ones.

  24. It’s not all doom and gloom.

Sevco will be promoted, the Old Firm franchise will be back up and running in about 9-10 months time and it will be back to business as usual.

A few will depart never to return, but far more will have their interest rekindled.
