Financial cost and prep for 2016

988

I reckoned Champions League participation was worth circa £22m to Celtic. By contrast, Europa League football will be worth less than a quarter of that. Ancillary income, such as retail and kiosk sales, will also suffer.

The challenge now is to improve the team without that income. This should not be impossible. Malmo managed it, and we’re not in a situation where the bank is hammering at the door. But what should be clear, is that the next five days represent the best chance to strengthen the team for next August’s qualifiers. There’s a notion that the biggest games of our season come early, but we’ve 11 months to plan for 2016’s biggest games.

Three things to remind you about:

Golfers: buy a raffle ticket for £1 to win a round of golf FOR FOUR PEOPLE at the magnificent Aberdour course in Fife. Competition ends on Saturday, get your tickets here!!! It’s offered by Taggsybhoy, in support of the Foundation.

Aberdour

There’s a Mary’s Meals collection from 1pm on the Celtic Way ahead of the game on Saturday. Ideally we’re looking for backpacks, but handtowels (the school kitchens you paid for have handwashing facilities and each child is given their own handtowel), pencils, rulers, etc.

If the kids got new kit for starting school last week, dig out the old stuff and bring it along.

Magners have kindly donated two Premium Seats in the Jock Stein Stand for Saturday’s games. You can win the tickets by answering this question:

Who is Celtic’s top scorer this season?

Player’s surname in the SUBJECT line of your email to celticquicknews@gmail.com . Competition closes at 22:00 TONIGHT, so not a lot of time to enter.

No call today for a donation, go stick a £1 in Taggsy’s raffle instead. Thanks.

    Just a fan …

I am a fan of systems … I like systems….I will take 11 less talented players who play for and with each other every time …. the players should know their roles in the system, and if someone gets injured, someone should be able to slot in ….

the funny thing is, I liked the 4231 system … it is fun to watch … and, for the most part, I like the players we have brought in …GMS, SA, even Ciftci, I really rate (I might be the only one on CQN who rates him)… I just dont think we are getting the most out of them… they aren’t playing like a unit … and that to me is a coaching problem.

When was the last time we had a talisman in the side? Through the decades, we’ve had the Lisbon Lions with half the team talismen. Then there was Kenny and Danny, later Paul McStay and even Nicholas for his short spell, Mcavennie, the 3 amigos, Lubo? MON’s team had two or three and thats without counting the KOK.

Was Naka the last we could say was our big ‘star player’?

Granted, PL and his pals might be good beancounters….but know nothing about football.

    That is the problem.

When the board become more important than the team on the pitch….its time for a radical change.

I don’t propose change just for the sake of it….but sooner or later people will realise that’s the way of the world.

PL has had 10 yrs….we are now stagnating….change is natural, don’t fear it, we cannot do any worse than the shambles we have now.

Personally I’d like to see the CL scrapped and returned to it’s original format. This would stop it being the money making machine it’s become for the big clubs( stunned to see an analyst last year stating Man U couldn’t afford another year without it) and would mean these clubs could go out if not careful. Mind you, there’s not a hope in hell of this happening.

Did we really pay £3 million for Big Boerigter and pay him £15000 a week???

    Seems like it.

Mike, Cifci might turn out well. Problem is that it would be too late. We signed a suspended player. We had one competent striker for the biggest game of the year.

    Ah! There’s the rub…

A coach, our coach, who knows this system, has seen it work triumphantly (at a competitive level just a tad or two lower) and has seen lesser players deploy it has failed at an early challenging encounter.

It’s begun to dawn on me the level of Ronny’s inexperience. Firstly Quarabeg then more potently Malmo tactically positioned their players to obstruct our system.

Two ways to overcome the obstacles…. 1) our players step up and employ the system more effectively, more dynamically or 2) change the system to counteract our opponents moves.

    1) implies the players know and trust the system AND can implement it better.

    2) Implies, when counteracted the players can’t play the system better and an alternative system is needed.

One of those reactions is firmly the responsibility of the players; one is firmly the responsibility if the coach.

TBH…I don’t know which it is!!!

  8. Reading back the posts . Unsure too if Ronny is the man for the job , but what I am sure of , is that we need steel in the team , it was bad enough losing on Tuesday to a team we should be back heeling , but to lose in the manner we did with no fight was unacceptable . IMHO we have looked to Scott brown to supply the grit , but in all honesty although a gutsy wee guy , he is no davy hay , or Bertie auld . We also seem to be lost once we get to the oppositions 18yard box , pass pass and more passes ,mostly sideways and backwards , it would be debatable if we would have scored had we still been playing . Hopefully Scott Allan who can see a pass will have the ability to open up defences . Was also looking at the comments after the LC draw , god they aren’t half showing there faces again . One guy in particular who,s name has popped up here a few times , even said he wanted us , as the best sevco team in 20 years , would be more than a match for the worst celtic team in 10 years . We’ve let them off the leach . Celtic should have been so far in front of them with the advantage we’ve had , that even when there back ,it would have been years before they caught up with us , if ever .

Maybe 20 years from now these Legends games could be rebranded as “Legned” games and could feature some of the more obscure and pointless signings and trialists that we`ve seen over the last few years since all this Moneyball snash took root at Celtic Park. John Park could manage one team and Peter Lawwell the other.

Mind you they`d have to play a 2-3-5 formation on account of all the dross we`ve signed up front especially!

When the plc results have disappointed our custodians react and adjust policy.

When the team disappoints or underperforms there seems to be little reaction from said custodians.

That is why the perception reigns that the plc is their priority.

We know VVD and a few others will be sold in this window so why not spend some of it in advance to try and gain access to the lucrative champions league cash.

Let’s bring back the old board, they were great. They didn’t need or want season ticket holders, they understood the needs and the feelings of the fans, they almost achieved ……… bankruptcy.

Just as well for big Jock that CQN wasn’t about on and after the 23rd October 1971 he would have been slaughtered on here. NO I am not comparing the Big Mhan to Ronny Deila but players lose you games, especially cup games.

If anybody thinks we can replace the Board with anything that will be much different then I’m afraid you are living in cloud cuckoo land. It’s all well talking about fan ownership but somebody will and needs to be in charge. Our problem is that one person owns too many shares. He does not want to own the club but he sure as hell wants to control it. Any future custodians will always put fiscal prudence ahead of profligate spending, unless of course they are called David Murray.

So we get rid of Peter Lawwell, who is a Celtic fan believe it or not, and replace him with who? His replacement will have the same terms of reference from his employers as he does. There is no easy answer to this and coming on here, some endlessly, bumping your gums will not have the slightest effect on where we are today or will be tomorrow.

The best we can hope for is that Ronny stands up and demands a change to the scouting system, he may have done so already, and we stop spending good money on duds.

We are now living in an era where instant success is being demanded and if you don’t deliver it you are out of the door. One thing is for sure if a young Alex Ferguson got the job at Man Utd today he would be sacked no later than the second season into his tenure.

I’m prepared to cut Ronny a fair bit of slack as he is hamstrung with the CL having to start the qualifiers before the league season starts. Those of us old enough can remember what happened in 1967 we went out of the European Cup in the first round only months after winning it.

  14. We should be looking to offload a lot of players. IMO we wouldn’t miss Stokes. scepovic, Ambrose, Boerrigter. I would also look to move some players who again IMO don’t provide value for money.

I would punt Brown, Commons and Mulgrew. I would also consider Lustig due to injuries.

  15. @CAPTAIN BEEFHEART

“How much extra money did we have when we got to the CLL last 16, sold Ki, Hooper, Wilson, Forster, Wanyama, Watt, my cat etc?”

Since GS’s last season (2008/2009) we have gained £65m in transfers, and laid out £57m.

So we’ve made an £8m profit in 8 years from transfers fees only (this does not count wages, which obviously means we’ll have made a huge loss)

  16. THE GLORIOUS BALANCE SHEET

I wonder what the real Celtic Lions think about RD saying Celtic were “scared”.

I wouldn’t think they would be too amused.

I wonder what all those legends emblazoned on Celtic Park….would think of that.

I think you could hazard a pretty accurate guess.

  18. Allgreen ….

Would agree with most of that… except for Brown who, last evening excepted, has become and is becoming a better player!

Commons…irritates the hell out of me…occasionally brilliant, very effective goal scorer but one of the worst at keeping Celtic in possession!!!

Poor Lustig! If not injury free this season…..he has to go, sadly

Does that not tell you that PL et al aren’t interfering with the football policy? If it doesn’t change regardless of success?

We’ve not heard much about the VvD transfer in the last couple of days? What if, after Tuesday, Southampton have decided they don’t want him after all.

It would be unfortunate if we’d already spent his transfer fee.

  20. Its an insult to the Celtic Legends displayed at Celtic Park.

To have a team who let the best supporters in the world down repeatedly.

RD says we were “scared”….Scott Brown says he was “ashamed”, and Kris Commons says “we weren’t at the races”

Now…I don’t care what any of you say….to me, that is unacceptable.

    We need change.

  21. Joe Filippis Haircut on

KEVINJOHN. It is not the amount of money we have spent on transfer fees that should concern us but the lack of value for the money. We have bought in so many poor players and we have to ask the question is our scouting Dept. fit for purpose ? H.H.

  22. glendalystonsils on

I agree with the view that too many loan signings leads to an unsettled team but I would make an exception in the case of loans with an option to buy. If they turn out to be duds we send them back. If they turn out to be gems like big Fraser , we excercise the buy option provided the fee is realistic. It’s just a pity we couldn’t have got the likes of Derk on such an arrangement rather than wasting precious cash.

  23. the glorious balance sheet on

    Captain Beefheart-

Olivier Kapo turned up in the middle of season 2010/11, wearing squad number 77. He was free (always a plus for the beancounters) and played a couple of games as sub before disappearing into obscurity. Although I saw him come on as a sub in a game at Celtic Park, I have no idea what position he was supposed to be playing.

Lacny is Milos Lacny – a Slovak forward we brought in as a trialist with a South African forward and Pletikosa the goalie too just before we got pumped by Sion. Lacny turned up at Dundee Utd a few months later which tells you all you need to know about what a stab in the dark he was by our scouts.

    The Green Man-

I wouldn’t be to harsh on Ronny for making that comment. It was said right after the game when emotions are raw. I`m more worried about what he does rather than what he says; the way in which for example all European coaches seem to get the measure of him after the first match (c.f. Maribor, Salzburg, Astra, Zagreb, Inter Milan, Malmo).

  24. Paul67:

Just in fro work, like yesterday I’ll start by posting a bit of the thread:

The challenge now is to improve the team without that income…But what should be clear, is that the next five days represent the best chance to strengthen the team for next August’s qualifiers. There’s a notion that the biggest games of our season come early, but we’ve 11 months to plan for 2016’s biggest games…

The same can be said for 2015 and other Seasons.

We failed again, either RD did not make it clear to the Board we needed a LB and Striker in order be prepared for this Season’s qualifiers. Or the Board refused to speculate to accumulate in preparation if RD had told them he wanted to be sure he had the Personnel he needed.

2016 will see us being put out at the second qualifying round.

It’s all sounding like a broken record.

    Stillguttedcfc…

    Keep the Faith!

    Hail Hail!

  25. Hunderbirds are Gone on

Scott Allan on BBC 1 right now. Well a guy called Scott, and a guy called Allan (same team) are on pointless. Let’s hope it’s not a prediction if he plays this weekend.

  26. The Glorious Balance Sheet

I wouldn’t be too harsh on Ronny…..he has been shellshocked.

In some of his interviews prior to the game….he looked terrified.

Maybe…he is out of his depth….I don’t know.

But I do know who is responsible for appointing RD.

The PLC are quite happy for the manager to take the flak….and its not right.

They threw him right in at the deep-end….and as usual….they are now hiding, and getting their lackeys to do their talking for them.

    Shambles.

    HH

    I’m not blaming RD

  27. DD is not a ‘sugar daddy’ – he is the major shareholder.

His remit to PL is to run the within its means.

PL’s remit to managet is that you can decide what players you want as long as you do not break the pay scale and you must stay within the overall football budget.

All this is common sense bearing in mind the market thst we operate in.

Either our football budget is such that it only allows us to bring in second/third-class players, or, we are choosing the wrong players, who van be bought within that budget.

I do not think that eithet DD or PL scout, or, recommend players – so why blame them for the performance of the team.

As many say on here, there are European clubs, Malmo for example, who are better than us, with a much lower budget.

So common sense tells us that our European fails MUST be at operation level – in simple terms, recruitment, managerial and playing levels.

So rather than turn on DD, PL and the board – surely the Operations staff must be held responsible.

Where you might criticize PL, is that he maybe should fire the lot of them and start again.

Of course he can’t do that, such a revolutionary cull would damage the club domestically – so only an evolutionary approach can ever be considered.

Isn’t that what PL was trying to do by bringing in Ronny.

Scottish, and/or the Scottish-based players on which Ronny has decided to make the basis of his squad do not have the mental ability to be winners, except against their counterparts in Scotland – i.e. they are all as bad as each other – look no further than the national team, who have failed to qualify for anything for over a generation, despite the majority of players playing down south – “you can take the player out of Scotlsnd, but you can’t take Scotland out of the player”

Apart from a few individual eexceptions – say Murray and Hoy, who both owe their prowess to the UK system, we are now a nation of sporting duds.

So let’s take our not insubstantial football budget at Celtic and make it our business to recruit all our players and coaching staff, from anywhere but Scotland – wr could start with Scandinavia.

Old Warby from Ibrox seems set on cleansing Sevco of as many Scots and former Scottish club players as possible, preferring instead the flotsam and jetsam of the lower and non-league in England – and seemingly with some success, albeit at a lower level.
